Stopped working after about 2 and 1/2 years. Is that a long time? It's a Microsoft product and I paid about $25 for it brand new, so I guess I expected it to last at least 5 years. So it came up far short of expectations.

I've got a wireless Logitech that I bought for my Netbook around the same time that is still going strong. If I were a betting man, I would have wagered that the Microsoft product would outlast the Logitech product, and I would have lost the bet!

It also chewed through many AA batteries in its short career, whereas I think the Logitech has only used 2 or 3 batteries in 3 years. Obviously the replacement wireless mouse will be a Logitech and not another Microsoft product!

Amazing battery life

I have both versions of this Microsoft wireless mouse - Winter Blue and Slate. Just in case you're wondering: they are identical except for the colors, so you might as well choose which ever one is on sale. Of course if you need two wireless mouses, then it is best to pick one of each color. This way you can ensure that when you operate both mouses in close proximity, their wireless transmitters will not interfer with each others.

What I found surprising is that this wireless mouse consumes very little power when it is in low-power standby mode. When you move the mouse around, the LED light brightens up, and current cunsumption jumps to about 25mA briefly. But once you stop moving the mouse, the current soon drops to only 0.4-0.5mA. Therefore you can expect a single AA alkaline cell (typically rated at 2800mAh under light load) to last for about six months, even if your never turn the mouse off. This kind of battery life is simply amazing.

If you want to use rechargeable battery in this mouse, make sure you choose the latest generation of "ready-to-use" low self-discharge cells (such as Sanyo Eneloop or Rayovac Hybrid). Don't even bother with older generation 2500mAh NiMH cells from Energizer or any other brands, because those cells will completely self-discharge within a few weeks.

One final remark: This mouse can be used under Windows XP without any software drivers. However, it is best to install the IntelliPoint 5.0 (or later) mouse driver from Microsoft. It gives additional customization features, plus a battery status monitor from your PC.

The sick mouse that oozed liquid plastic!

I'm make this brief--I cannot recommend this mouse. The design may be OK, but the build and materials are terrible. The first one stopped working after dropping a few feet to the floor. But, since it worked fine until the fall, I bought a second; what a huge mistake! First, the urethane grip reacted under use. Disgustingly, a big blister of liquid formed in the urethane and started oozing from the mouse. Good god--what is this freakish stuff?! Taking a scalpel, I lanced the mouse boil and kept using it, hoping the ooze wasn't harmful. Unfortunately, the problems didn't end there. Now, the USB contacts on the wireless adapter are failing. Given the weird and gross problems of this mouse, I would avoid any upgrade to this model. Please note--the newest MS software is also incompatible with this mouse.

Works well, but rubberized side can wear quickly under the thumb

The USB receiver works well, and while large compared to some other wireless mice, has not been a problem on my laptop at all. The mouse is suitably sensitive, and has worked well on all surface I have used (paper, desktop, trousers). I love finally having a scroll wheel for my laptop.

However, the rubberized side of the mouse, under where my thumb normally rests, seems to be shredding - the outer layer of plastic has little bits dangling and feels annoying under my thumb. I suspect it could have been weakened by a combination of the oils in my skin and coming into contact with other items in my laptop bag.

So, all in all a great mouse - I just wish the sides were made of a more durable material.

Update - November 2010
I have worn/reacted completely through the thin outer layer of plastic under where my thumb grips the mouse on the side, and the underlying layer of material is odd... it seems to "sweat" after I have used the mouse for a while. I return to my desk the next day, and will see a drop of liquid about to drip from the bottom of the mouse. I cannot tell if it is water or oil or a mix, but it is definitely a liquid. I now need to keep a paper towel handy to clean up after my mouse...

I'm on the road all the time. As such, I have a lot of assembling powerpoints, working excel spreadsheets, and the like on my tiny little laptop in hotel rooms. The track pad is nice, but after hours and hours on it, my fingers begin to go numb, I miss my targeted cells, and things generally start to go downhill. That's where this tiny little mouse comes into play. I can actually travel with it, and it's pretty darn good at what it does!

The good:
- Small enough to pop into your travel bag with your laptop, without noticing the size and weight
- Cordless. No more tangly mess trying to use the mouse!
- Runs on one AA battery. I use an Energizer rechargeable to stay green, and only have to charge it about once a month. Not too shabby.
- Works every time, without fail. I love just plugging it in and having it work.
- The USB stick stores in the mouse. I don't have to worry about misplacing one or the other. As a bonus, with the stick installed, the mouse won't turn on, preventing battery drain in the bag.

The bad:
- No battery charge level indicator. Sometimes I forget to charge it, and run out of juice. How depressing.
- It's pretty darn small. If you have big hands, it will probably not be the most comfortable mouse you've ever used.
