Wow! Where did these guys come from? I heard "Evil" at the gym, and asked as to who recorded it. I bought "Antics" shortly thereafter, as, with so little music of the variety I love being produced today, I have a tendency to take chances on whatever sounds strong. I did not expect Interpol to be as talented and fresh as they are. In comparison to them, the band which jumps out at me most is Echo & the Bunnymen; mostly due to their energy and fluidity. They, just like Echo, are clean without being poppy (or at least the pre-rap version of poppy). The Joy Division influences are clear, and that's a heckuva band with which to be equated. When put alongside their contemporaries, Interpol appears to be on human growth hormone; which I mean as a sincere compliment. Antics has been polished with grit for a month. I was incredibly impressed with this CD and its verve. Now I have "Turn on the Bright Lights" on the wish list. If its half as cool as "Antics" I'll be a happy man. Really though, this is one of the few offerings I heard the first time and adored. None of the songs here are weak. As for them being a glam band, I personally could care less what they look or act like. The tunes come first...and last.
