Product Description

In this acclaimed, animated rock and roll feature, Angel, a member of a punk rock band in the apocalyptic future, is kidnapped by Mok, a legendary super rocker. Obsessed with an evil experiment, Mok plans to use Angel s voice to summon a demon from another dimension. The rest of the band follow Mok to Nuke York in an attempt to rescue her and then the ultimate battle of good vs. evil begins.

Although it featured songs by Debbie Harry, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Cheap Trick, and Earth, Wind & Fire, Rock and Rule (Canada, 1983) never received a general US release. Set in a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by mutants, the underdeveloped story centers on the rock star Mok and his efforts to summon a demon from another dimension. Only the voice of aspiring singer Angel can cross the dimensional barrier and free the monster. Mok pursues Angel through series of chases and concerts that produce complications involving her true love/singing partner Omar and his band. Clive Smith's direction is simply inept: the story plods along listlessly; the characters change motivation on a dime; the crude CG special effects are squandered in minor scenes, rather than used to punch up the climax.

Rock and Rule reflects the confusion of the animation industry in the early '80s. Yellow Submarine and Fritz the Cat had proved there was an audience for hip, edgy animated features. But nobody could make a good one, and a series of bombs caused animation to be labeled box-office poison. More than 20 years later, Rock and Rule holds a curiosity value for fans of old rock, but it's not a memorable film. (Rated PG: violence, grotesque imagery, brief nudity, alcohol, drug, and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

I remember this movie fondly. Yeah it has little to no character development and the story & plot are silly. The animation is flat & rough by todays standards and on our modern Hi def TVs you definitely notice. The soundtrack & nostalgia are the whole reason to buy the movie. Regardless I was so excited to find it available on DVD!

If you know the history of the plaque of locusts (studio interference) that tanked this movie at the box office here in the USA it’s no small miracle it survived to be transferred to DVD.

It comes with 2 discs. The main American theatrical release, an alt version (maybe the Canadian version ?) and bonus content. I’ve only watched the main American theatrical release on Disc 1 so I won’t comment on the additional content at this time.

I will say that unlike so many DVDs sold this had a 3x3in square of bubble wrap between the 2 discs to keep the discs from coming loose during shipping an getting damaged. This tells me the manufacturer actually cares about their product.

Rock and Rule is still one of my favorite animated films, even in this current era of CGI and almost three dimensional imagery . There are many movies that have better animation, but there`s something about the soul of this one that simply speaks to me and apparently to other members of its cult following. Directed by Clive A. Smith for Canada`s Nelvana Studios, it had a rough box office start, not finding a true audience until it was made available on cable and home video.

The film was billed as a post apocolyptic sci fi story mixed with music, set in a future in which humans are extinct and creatures descended from dogs, cats, and rats are the dominant species. However, these "mutants" are portrayed as very anthropomorphic, so you tend to forget about this trope during much of the action. The basic plot follows the adventures of a small town rock band led by cynical guitarist Omar and his girlfriend, singer/keyboardist Angel. Longing for fame, they accept an invitation from rock superstar Mok, a reptilian cross between Mick Jagger and Sauron from LOTR. Unfortunately, he`s only interested in Angel. Her pure voice is the one he`s been looking for, the key to unlock a dimension of evil and help him achieve world dominance. After he distracts the band and kidnaps her, the rest of the film deals with their quest to find her and stop Mok`s takeover.

During the journey there is sardonic humor (especially from wise cracking Omar ), satirical depictions of early 80`s fashion and cultural trends, and some great music by Debbie Harry, Cheap Trick, and Lou Reed, among others. However, what makes the film for me is the character of Angel. She`s confident and assertive, yet also capable of sensitivity, as shown by her consoling Omar when he doubts that the band will ever make it. She does her own songs for the band and is active in promoting them as a group, not just a showcase for Omar or herself. And she does not wait to be rescued from Mok : she`s constantly coming up with plans to do that on her own , alternately fighting and pretending to co-operate with him. You definitely did not see many heroines in animation like her back in the 80`s. outside of anime.

Though Rock and Rule has dated in some ways, it is still a timeless tale about the conflict between good and evil, kind of a latter day myth, if you will. And the soundtrack, which has yet to be released as far as I know, truly does match the plot in a seamless way, especially the anthemic " Send Love Through," sung by Debbie Harry at the film`s conclusion. I understand that there is a Blu ray release, which I do not have as yet, but is loaded with extra features . This is a cult classic because it joins characters one can identify with to a coherent plot, instead of simply placing random scenes around the music and animation.

Set in the future where man has destroyed himself, the only survivors were rats, cats and dogs that have mutated into humanoid beings. An aging rocker named "Mok" has plans to take over the world using an experiment to bring a demon from another dimension by using a special voice, he kidnaps a beautiful singer named "Angel" to use her voice, but only Omar ( her boyfriend) and friends must stop Mok before it's too late.

A magnificent, entertaining and well made animated Sci-fi fantasy rock opera with the music of Debroah Harry, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Earth Wind and Fire and Cheap Trick. The Animation is what i call spectacular even on the characters, there's a fairly decent plot but still this is a very impressive underrated cult animated flick that will now have it's audience thanks to DVD, that Angel is a total knockout.

The 2-Disc set includes the American version with great pictre & sound quality and the alternate Canadian version with a different voice track for "Omar" some omitted scenes and a alternate ending. There's also commentary by the director Clive Smith, behind the scenes, the Nelvana short " The Devil and Daniel Mouse" with behind the scenes of that short, trailer to "Rock & Rule", still gallery, collectable booklet, and conceptual art.

A highly recommended movie and a highly recommended DVD for lovers of animation, Sci-fi, fantasy and rock.

Also recommended: Heavy Metal, American Pop, The Fifth Element, Blade Runner, Total Recall, Wizards, The Black Cauldron, Fire & Ice, Hey Good Looking!, Robin Hood (Disney), Akira, Ghost in The Shell, Metropolis ( both 1927 and 2001 versions), Princess Mononoke, The Dark Crystal, The Wizard of Oz, Treasure Planet.

Bueno, no es la edición más deseada de la película, pero si eres un fan como yo te va a saber a gloria. Calidad de imagen y sonido aceptables, aunque no tiene mal precio para lo que ofrece. Eso sí, va grabada en un Bluray+R

The original item description said it was in English. No, you start it up and the menus are in Spanish or Portuguese, not sure which. Also, as I had this Blu-Ray before, it was missing special features that were on the original. Looking closely at the disc, and after showing it to someone else, it appears to be a ripped/copied disk/created Blu-ray rather than an official release.

But it played, good sound, no glitches.

But enuf about me this movie is amazing and you need to watch it so buy it right now.
