Editorial Reviews

One of the most requested soundtrack restorations released at last. Earlier this year, Intrada issued the premiere release of Alex North's original recording of 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, a score legendary for being replaced entirely from the film with preexisting music. The treatment of Jerry Goldsmith's score to Ridley Scott's ALIEN is legendary in its own right, and for very similar reasons. For this monster film set in deep space, Goldsmith composed one of his most complex scores, relying on acoustic instruments to deliver the chilling, otherworldly atmosphere of the alien ship and its monstrous occupants. It was akin to his approach to PLANET OF THE APES, where Goldsmith eschewed electronics in favor of unique acoustic instruments to illustrate the foreboding landscape and upside down society. To achieve this effect in ALIEN, Goldsmith augmented the National Philharmonic Orchestra with didjeridu, serpent, and conch shell, with additional eerie effects courtesy of the echoplex, a process Goldsmith deployed previously to great effect in his score to PATTON. The result -- a masterful sci-fi/horror score that would influence genre movie scores for years to come. Despite Goldsmith's artistic genius in creating a striking sci-fi score, the filmmakers severely tampered with his music. Much of the music was removed from the film or employed in scenes for which it was not intended. Several cues from Goldsmith's early score to FREUD were tracked in. Worse yet, his sublime main title, emphasizing the mystery and vastness of space, went unused. Under duress, Goldsmith, rescored the main title for a starker, more minimalist piece which is heard in the film. While Goldsmith wrote an end title featuring the same main theme in all its glory, it too was removed from the film in favor of a selection from Howard Hanson's Symphony Number 2. What is heard in the film is not Goldsmith's musical vision for ALIEN. A soundtrack LP released at the time of the film featured 35-minutes of highlights from Goldsmith's score, presenting it more as he intended, with the original main and end titles in tact. Sound quality of this release was dry and compressed, and there was still much music both used and unused that did not make it to the album. Now, nearly thirty years after the film's release in 1979, with the generous cooperation of Universal Music Group and 20th Century Fox, Intrada presents the complete original score as Goldsmith intended, rounded out with all the alternates and rewrites, providing everything Goldsmith recorded for ALIEN. The album was remixed from the recently discovered 1" multi-track masters, bringing a new depth, detail, and crispness not heard in previous releases. Michael Matessino spent many painstaking weeks to deliver the striking results here, and also penning some of the most comprehensive liner notes written for a soundtrack, chronicling the saga of the genesis of the ALIEN score and its final results. This release is the final word on the complete ALIEN score, giving it the exposure and attention it has always deserved and giving admirers the album they have been craving for years.

The True A L I E N Fan's Edition

The True A L I E N Fan's Edition
By the time I watched A L I E N (now my absolute favorite film of all time) I was already a huge Jerry Goldsmith fan and I already had a growing library of his film scores. Despite reminding me of his score for Star Trek: The Motion Picture in some isolated instances, Jerry's score was unlike anything I'd ever heard before. The score shifts continually between warm, romantic and melancholy passages and unsettling, eerie motifs which bear no resemblance to anything that I'm familiar with. A long story short, the score as heard in the film is great. The first version of the score you'll hear if you buy this version is also great and it has a lot of things which the film version does not. Really odd, unsettling sounds. Is either version better than the other? No. In fact, there's nothing about the theatrical version of A L I E N that I'd change. And, listening to Jerry's original conception, I dare to think that I can see why the Filmmakers made some of the changes that they did. But you know, one of the things that I've always treasured is that A L I E N presents us with a nearly perfect finished product and a vast library of extras to inhabit. I feel that listening to Jerry's original score is important, just as I feel it's important to give the Director's Cut version of the film a watch, even though I prefer the theatrical version. The deleted and alternate scenes, the music, the wonderful storyboards and artifacts, the interviews and essays and all the content which went into and has grown out from A L I E N...I for one can't get enough of it. This album fits right in with all of that. Growing up in the 1990s, I was probably part of the last generation when, if you saw a film and really liked the score, you'd go to a record store and see if it was available for home listening. It's not everyday that I get to add a new physical CD to my beloved OST collection anymore. This edition of A L I E N's soundtrack makes me feel young. It has a very 1990s soundtrack album presentation. The liner notes are long and so technically written. I don't really know enough about the technicalities of composing music to get much out of the track by track written descriptions but they're nice to see. The only minor negative I have to report is that getting the first disc to come off the double decker caddy was a pain. I did not want to bend it, so getting it off took a minute. The audio quality is superb. The graphic design is great. It looks great, it sounds great. Bravo Jerry! Bravo Intrada for giving the score of A L I E N the definitive treatment it deserves!

This is the complete release of Jerry Goldsmith's mostly altered and unused score for 1979's "Alien." Both the score and the film are masterpieces, but fans of the movie may be surprised by some of the music on the album. During editing and the post-production process, much of Goldsmith's music was dialed out, rescored or removed entirely. The final album here reveals what the score would have been had it remained untouched.

The music is incredible, reflecting Goldsmith's vision of exotic instruments to represent the alien. His melodic main title theme is featured here in several arrangements, connecting the thematic material of the score across the entire album. This theme was pulled back to very few statements in the final film, and the main title sequence was rescored to emphasize the conch sound with which director Ridley Scott was impressed. Each track's liner notes detail the history of the specific recording, including information about how it was used, if at all, in the film, and which segments were restored at the director's request.

Rescored cues are also included on the release, completing the score by showing the next step of the process - the composer's original ideas and the changes made in (minor) collaboration with the director. Some demos of cues are also included, as is the movie edit of the main title (a shortened version rescored main title track). Rounding out the second disc is a remastered reproduction of the original soundtrack LP from 1979, giving fans a complete "Alien" musical experience.

This album is incredibly worth it, giving you everything you could want as a fan of the movie's music, and also offering a glimpse into the tumultuous editing process. It is out of print, so pick it up when you can.

I am able to acquire the score to what I consider the greatest monster movie that has ever been made, as well as the scariest movie I've ever seen (and yes, I've seen The Exorcist).

I've lost count of the number of times I've watched Alien. I first saw it in theaters as a 12-year-old (thanks, Dad, I really needed all of those nightmares). I saved money to purchase the original vinyl LP back in 1980 or so, but once I was able to get the movie on video and watch it repeatedly, I became aware that the score on the LP was not nearly what was in the movie, and much of what was on the LP simply was not in the movie.

So when I was browsing Amazon recently, I found this title and bought it on the spot. I listened to it for the first time this week after arriving at work, where I usually get there before anyone else and have the office mostly to myself. This music brought back a lot of the uneasy feelings I associate with the movie, but I was happy to be listening to the score that Goldsmith wrote and a lot of which does appear in the movie.

For any fan of Alien, I highly recommend this release.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Complete Alien Listening Experience

I bought the LP back in 1979 when CDs and videos were almost nothing but a myth on Tommorrows World. There was so much missing from the film and what was recorded on to the album was presented in such a disjointed fashion that I couldn't help feeling a little disappointed.
Well, after thirty years they've actually set the record straight!
A 2CD collection featuring a total of 126 minutes of tracks composed for the film ( with a fascinating in depth history of the troubled production score included) makes this essential listening for all the true fans of the original and best of the "Alien" films.
Firstly its a joy to hear all of the complete original score set in the right order so that you will actually get the right sense of the tension building. It really is so superbly done and so distinctive you realise immediately just how much it brought to the movie. Also included at the end are the "rescored" alternate cues that were done at the behest of Ridley Scott. It was fascinating to read the booklet whilst listening to determine what "was and wasn't" finally used and just how subtley they differed.
Also included is that Original Soundtrack Album from 1979 and bonus tracks including the haunting Main Title openning and a few other samples.Worth it alone for that Openning I could feel the hairs standing up at the back of my neck.
Overall I am delighted with it. I debated about buying because of the price but having listened to it its worth every penny to me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jerry Goldsmith's Meisterwerk

This and Aliens have always been near the top of my favourite soundtracks. Being a collector I already had the original vinyl versions but wanted the Mondo releases too. I managed to get Aliens and this little beauty on Acid Green Vinyl. The vinyl transfer is amazing, which is particularly important with this (and Aliens) as there are quiet a few quiet passages.

Aliens is now OOP but you can still pick up the Alien double album at a decent price, although now only on black vinyl. For those undecided I would encourage them to take the plunge as this soundtrack sounds stunning on vinyl. Certainly one of Goldsmith's best.

The gatefold sleeve is nice and thick and the artwork is great. You don't get any liner notes as such, just an insert stating recording dates, etc.

    Worth every penny.

Very Pleased with this product, i have been a huge alien fan since the age of 8, it was the first horror film i can recall watching and years later i have finally decided to collect all of the soundtracks. I think one of the more interesting parts of this package is the little booklet which details the struggles of creating the music that Mr Goldsmith faced and while Riddley Scott tampered with it and many cues were changed, this contains all of the music which Gerry Goldsmith originally created for the film (some of which was not used) and then the alternate tracks which were, for example track one was not the theme used for the film it was the originally intended whereas track 24 on disc 1 is the recreated version which you hear in the movie.
