This has interesting music, I LOVED the movie and was caught off guard with hw much I had liked it and the music fit the scenes pretty well.

I listen to this soundtrack as I am writing my books and it makes for incredible mood music. It's both eerie and beautiful at the same time. This is certainly one instance where the music is far better than the film (though I did enjoy the film.).

Usually when you see a January release film about exorcism and the devil you probably want to stay far away from it. It's rare that you'd find a decent score behind a film like this, but with Alex Heffes it's always worth a listen. His score to The Rite is actually quite good. The score benefits from vivid melodies and thematic material, and the orchestration is quite impressive.

What first struck me was the overall sound of the score. This execution and overall soundscape had a good feel. It felt like the score was creating a unique atmosphere, and it was. The instrumentation is of course to thank for that. I'm glad Heffes didn't just go with an Angles & Demons rip here. He definitely made the score his own. A few moments give it a nostalgic Jerry Goldsmith/John Williams feel. Other parts utilize some synths to modernize it but they don't feel out of place. I like that it doesn't try to be a horror score and that the music tries to be suspenseful versus terrorizing. So, yeah there are a lot of good things going on here. However, the score is not without its setbacks.

While there is lots of good in the score it's really spread out over minutes of ambient tones. There are a lot of sustaining notes in this score too. You know the notes that are supposed to make you tense up and hold your breath? They start to get annoying. Now I said earlier that it tries to be suspenseful as a compliment, but the word here is "tries". The score doesn't succeed to make the listener tense up or get hooked into the atmosphere. That unfortunately creates an emotional distance and therefore the score doesn't reach its full potential. So, while there is plenty of good in this score it falls short of creating an emotional journey for the audience.

Brooding choirs, suspense and some grandiose orchestral cues make this a highly recommended score. That said, there is nothing groundbreaking in terms of themes or orchestral construction, but it does deliver the required tone surprisingly well.

There are a few moments of dissonance as would be expected in a score of this type (especially in the track "Exorcism of Lucus"), however in other tracks, generally these sections do not last long enough to detract from the listening experience. There are also a few jumpy moments which caught me off guard but that is to be expected from a score such as this. Some minor electronic elements were used for percussion and ambience but were not used extensively. The second track "Going to Rome", and the final two cues "The Final Exorcism" and "The Farewell" were my favourite tracks because of the more majestic orchestral style.

Overall, this album has more of a suspense feel than horror. I prefer the quieter more tender moments with the light choir, strings and piano, although these are not in abundance. The more grandiose cues (especially with the brooding male choir) are fantastic, especially in the climax of the penultimate track "The Final Exorcism". If you want the full suspense effect, listen at night with the lights off!
