As far as the design of the gameplay, you race around the exact same tracks, in the same order, as they were raced in this year's real-life Formula One season. You choose a team to start with, and drive the same car until you've achieved enough to get an offer from a different team. Throughout the season you can make small performance improvements to your car in the form of R&D objectives. Each race goes like this: you start with practice. These sessions last around an hour, letting you learn the track and get faster and faster on it. Then comes qualifying, where you try to do a few perfect laps and set a good time, which determines your place on the starting grid. And finally, the race itself. Due to all the buildup of practice and qualifying, the race itself seems like quite an exciting event. There are a lot of options here, you can have one practice session or three, and the length of the race can be set anywhere from a few laps all the way up to the length of the real-life race, usually between 60-70 laps.
The graphics are very good. Although they're probably not going to win any awards, they're not going to elicit too many complaints either. They have adequate detail to fit right into the current generation of games, but not really enough to make you say wow. Replays really look nice though, and seem to have a bit more detail and realism. For the most part the framerate is wonderfully smooth, though there is some slowdown in the second-to-last corner at Monaco. But it's the same every time you go around that corner, so it's predictable and doesn't affect gameplay.
There are plenty of options when it comes to choosing the difficulty that is right for you. You can set the overall difficulty of the game, which affects how much traction your car gets. Set it on hard and if you give it 1% too much throttle exiting a corner, you will spin out. Set it on medium, you'll get a much more forgiving experience. You can then choose the difficulty of the AI cars, which is basically how fast they go. And then you've got the usual driving aids, like traction control and anti-lock brakes, driving line, etc. you can also choose automatic or manual transmission - though at the higher difficulty levels I believe that it requires you to use manual transmission. You can set the damage simulation to realistic or cosmetic - real damage will cause your front wing to be broken off whenever you hit a wall, which greatly reduces the front end traction you get, requiring you to make a pit stop to have it replaced if you want to have any hope of being competitive. You can even choose realistic fuel simulation, which drastically lessens the braking ability of the car at the beginning of a race due to the weight of all the fuel, and as the race goes on and the fuel is used, traction gradually improves. So with a little fiddling around, you can customize your game experience exactly the way you want it.
The feeling of speed while driving the cars is pretty good as well. Especially on the Monaco track, which is absolutely packed full of tight corners and walls on either side. Watching all those walls and guardrails flash by you at 100+ mph, mere inches from the front wheels of your car...it's quite the experience. Which reminds me - you can perform some impressive crashes in the game. I managed to get my car to come to rest on its side once.
Overall, this game provides tons of options, gives you a genuine Formula 1 season, the physics are extremely realistic - if you're a fan of Formula 1 or racing in general, I'd highly recommend this.
The game is simply fantastic at every level. I am a Formula 1 fan of over 30 years and attended many races over the years and since I started watching in 1982. I have played many simulations in that time too and I can tell you this is the best F1 simulation I have tried. My all-time favorite was always an effort by Jeff Crammond called Formula 1 Grand Prix which I played on my Atari ST back when I lived in Europe. It was a fantastic product and one that kept me hooked for a long time. Since then many titles have come and gone, but none has me playing as much as that title.
However I can see F1 2010 doing that.
Let's start with the tracks - the level of detail is superb. Having been to many of the old tracks (Spa, Monza, Silverstone, Monaco) I can tell you the programmers have got their act together on this one. Looking at Spa for instance, this is the only game I have played that gives you the feeling of gradient change around ALL of the track. Some games have captured the brilliance of Eau Rouge, but non have made you experience the banks coming out of Rivage or into Pouhon. F1 2010 certainly does that and it makes it easier for players to start to become familiar with the tracks. And that is the secret of driving fast around these tracks - the know where you are and what is next. You must learn the tracks to be able to do well in the game with the driving aids off and you must turn off all of the drivers aids off to be able to appreciate how good this game mimics real world dynamics (despite what another reviewer says).
The cars are detailed beautifully, when you sit in one it is not just the same car with a different livery skin on it, the cars themselves are molded as the real world cars for each team. The "f" duct on the McLaren for instance or the front wishbone double bulge on the Red Bull are two perfect examples. The paintwork and liveries are perfect and the cars look fantastic when overtaking or when being overtaken. Even the rendering on the wet weather light looks awesome; again the programmers did their homework on this one. Oh and they break apart orgasmicly when hit!
The handling of the cars is fantastic, but to get the real value of them you must turn off all of the drivers aids. Get rid of ABS, traction control, manual gears, driving line etc and you will appreciate how the cars feel. I recommend that you start with a time trial on one track (I choose Silverstone) and stick with it while you get the hang off driving the car. The way the car handles under braking, on lift and acceleration, cornering, understeer and oversteer all feel right. Although I have never driven an F1 car (not many of us have) the cars just feel right. They do what I would expect a car to do - only a lot quicker and a lot more violently!
As I said earlier , you need to learn the tracks to do well. Do not go directly into a race, but use the P1, P2 & P3 sessions to familiarize yourself with the track, the braking points, the lift points, acceleration points, race lines etc. Find yourself braking points in the scenery and the next time round, brake a little later or going faster - look for the limits of each corner of each track. With practice you can start hitting poles and wins and earning trophies. But to get the most out of the game, practice is what you need to be doing.
The rain effects on this game are a joy to behold and a pain to drive in. It looks like the real thing, that someone is hosing your TV screen and the visibility lessens. In traffic it gets even worse as the cars in front will send up rooster tails into your view making it almost non-existent - just like the real thing!
Do not compare this with GT5(p) as F1 2010 far surpasses the physics engine of it or any other tile. On GT5(p) you feel as though you are floating on air, not really connected with the real world - somehow in a bubble (difficult to explain). Other games suffer the same (including other Codemaster offerings) and I usually loose interest quickly.
I will be playing this game for a while, and hope I meet some of you on the multiplayer tracks of the PS3 world.
If you are a race fan, in particular an F1 fan, you'll adore this game - 5/5.
