The storyline jumps back and forth between present day and flashbacks to Kerry's past but it is so well-written that you never feel confused as to what era you are in. The writing is truly beautiful, full of wonderful descriptive phrases and by the end of the book, I felt as if the house he was developing was actually mine!
This is truly a novel to help you appreciate what you have and make you evaluate whether the material possessions in your life are anywhere near as important as the relationships that you have. This book is far from a downer though, it is full of moments of pure joy and will motivate you to seize the day, so to speak. This is a unique book and something which everyone should make space in their reading piles for!
The book contains a number of simple techniques to help improve your outlook on life and thus feel hopefully happier and more fulfilled. None of them are rocket science, but being happy isn't. What is important is that you think about how you can improve your mindset through your daily activities.
Think about things you can work into your life that you will enjoy. Some exercise, take a walk in the park, smell the flowers, listen to music. Do things for others and expect nothing in return. Play with your kids and make them laugh. Visit your family. Go out with friends. Go on holiday. Read an interesting book, this one perhaps. Explore somewhere. The list is endless. Just make sure you do things and experience life.
One of my favourite things from this book is Kerry’s mission in life – to inspire other people. I suggest reading this book when you’re down in life, perhaps on a day where you're feeling like you want something to make you smile.
Kerry’s writing is informed, supportive and genuine. He opens his book with the following: ‘Each of us has a first chapter in our lives. It’s generally the point in which you experience the most profound things and the time when you make the most mistakes. In the midst of it all, we experience pain and trauma from the experiences within it. For us to move towards happiness we need to first reflect back on our experiences within the first chapter of our lives and eliminate the hardship, anger, frustration, remorse, and sadness. From there, we can create a new level of thinking that will allow us to create powerful and positive results.”
Kerry inserts many memorable supportive sections, such as, 'Think your thoughts and they'll come true someday, write your thoughts down on paper and they'll come true instantly. The power of writing is tremendous.' And another, ‘If you’re a person who has been wronged in any manner, taken advantage of, or have been taken for granted, I hope that you too can let go of all the hurt and frustration that each of those hurtful events has caused. If you are someone who wants the same as I want— to live with an abundance of assorted pleasures and to start fresh with a new beginning, then take advantage of the opportunity right now.'
It is precisely because of his choice of memoir-type communication that his book so enriching. Grady Harp, August 15
In this personal journey, we follow Kerry through his success as an inspirational speaker and as a devoted son, brother and boyfriend. He discovers that by writing down his mistakes, feelings, and emotions, he is able to examine his life in a new way; a way that leads to answers, forgiveness, and self-acceptance--which then allows him to erase the negativity he has been holding on to.
The message of this book reminds me to rise every time I fall, that a new door opens each time an old one closes, and that I am in control of my life. What I most liked about this book was the sense of caring the author has for others, especially the teenagers he inspires.
I recommend this book to anyone searching to let go of negativity in their own lives. It is also a good read for those interested in inspirational speaking and helping teens that have been bullied or abused.
