Scary: Bioshock got me a couple times.
Emotional: 2 way tie - The ending of Fallout 3, after putting so much time into it and getting such a crappy ending. And finding out Samus was a girl at the end of the original Metroid. Don't know why it was just a big surprise.
Intense: When Kratos rips Icarus' wings off in GOW2 - AWESOME!

Scary: Resident Evil 2 when cycling through the cameras and the Tyrant is right behind you and smashes the camera.
Emotional: The death of Alys in Phantasy Star 4.
Intense: Einhander after defeating Earth's forces and the entire Moon Armada turns on you.

Scariest:

1. First Pyramid Head encounter in Silent Hill 2.. Cutscene with James trying to get out of that room but door not opening.
2. Regenerators from Resident Evil 4 after Leon falls from waste disposal room. Villagers scene attacking the house was also great.
3. Dead Space. The end game me the chills when Isaac looks into the passeger seat..

Emotional:

1. Metal Gear Solid 4: The Ending was hands down the most emotional ending I've seen. Raiden defending snake armless... ( I mean cmon, if this isn't courage I don't know what is.. )The microwave tunnel crawl... and Big Boss disarming Snake, and asking him to let go...

2. Heavy Rain. Ending when you finally rescue your son. Touching scene.

3. Darksiders: Ending Scene where War states that he cannot let the last of Heaven's honor die with its champion. When he is asked if he would wage the battle alone and says " Not ALONE" Then we see the other three horsemen arriving to help War... I found it emotional because this is a character betrayed and hunted by both heaven and hell, but has the courage and honor to make a stand.

4. Dante's Inferno. Ending part when Dante conquers hell and ascends to see purgatory. Dante literally went through hell for the woman he loved, atoning for his past sins.

Intense:

1. God of War I-II-III : Fight against Sisters of Fate / Zeus / Poseidon /Titan/ Gods etc. Mainly all the boss fights.
2. Normandy (Call of Duty2) /Storming the Reichstadt at the final level of Call of Duty World at War.. Cmon' this was Real!
3. Gears of War 1 & 2: Lot's of good Battles and epic gunfights.
4. Force Unleashed (Star Destroyer takedown with the force)
5. Lord of the Rings : Battles in Conquest, ROTK, Two Towers...etc

M. Donk says:
Scariest: well actually, a game has never scared me, SH2 at the most creeped me out.
Intense: Alan wake on nightmare, running to a light source just barely making it past the large group of taken, only to have the light flicker away when you reach it.
Emotional: In Bio-Shock when you find out Atlas is really Frank Fontaine and he's really been using you.

And why do so many people think Resident Evil is scary? I'm talking about any of them. They're fun (except for 5) but I never thought they were scary. Is it just me or did RE5 seem like it acually regressed from RE4. I'm going to just right a review about it before I start ranting.

BootsDanube says:
Emotional: Near the end of Mafia II when you get in one car and Joe gets in another car. You're being driven away after you kill Carlo Falcone. And suddenly you head in different directions ... NO SPOILER. I had to gasp.

The scariest moment for me was the first time I went face to face with a pink demon from DOOM. I walked around a corner and there it was growling at me. I actually jumped out of my chair.

Most Emotional: Reuniting Kafeia and Anju in Majora's Mask with about a minute left until the moon crashes. This was the first time I really cared about virtual characters. I felt like I accomplished something important. Reunting two loved ones, just a minute before they're about to be wiped off the face of the planet. And then I felt guilty that I had to save and warp back to the first day and they would once again be seperated. Epic stuff, and my favorite Zelda side quest.

Now that I'm on the topic of Zelda... Most Annoying: First time trying to beat the Water Temple in OOT... so glad that I've memorized it now.

Tristan says:
Scary:
The beginning of the first FEAR, with all of the hallucinations

Intense:
The sniping flashback mission in MW

Emotional:
Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2 specifically 1's ending.

Also have to give mention to the original Fallout ending, very intense for me. Not in the same vein as MW but intense in the "did that really just happen" sense.

And also have the mention "The Path". Entire game is creepy intense.

Stoughton says:
It has been a while, so I don't remember exactly what happened. But in the first F.E.A.R. expansion, something happened that startled me so bad that I actually jumped back from the screen and up out of my chair, cursing repeatedly. I loved it.

True story: I always play the F.E.A.R. games with all the lights out, to add to the effect. In the games Alma often whispers things to you from different directions. I was playing one night and I heard a whisper "I was just checking on you" but it didn't sound right, so I looked in the direction it came from only to see my computer room door closing (I had it closed before I started playing). I jumped up thinking WTF! And opened the door only to see my wife walking back to our bedroom. If she had had a red dress on, I think I would have crapped my pants.

I beat COD 4 Heat on Vet easily. Just last long enough to get down to the left side of the hill, jump the fence, and then get out of there. Took me a while to figure that out.

I think, for me, the most intense/emotional moment (it's both, in a strange sort of way) was when you finally find Maria in Gears 2, and all that ensues in Dom's mind followed by the sudden flash to the reality of the situation, and what has to be done.

It just struck an intensely personal note for me- somehow, it took me back to the night when I got the call from my then-fiancee's mother that my fiancee (who was visiting her mom on the other side of the country) had just had a seizure and died.

And yes, for anyone wondering, really- she was visiting her mother because she'd been having pinpoint embolysms stemming from a head injury, and a highly regarded specialist was based there.

So it goes, I guess.

Frank Perez says:
Scariest moment: in fatal frame 3 the girl awake and down the stairs and two feet in a pale color can see floating in air in the kitchen door....aaaaaaahhhhh
Most intense: in metal gear solid the battle with liquid snake and the final pursuit in the military car shooting a machine gun them liquid die...by a Heart attack????? wtf (foxdie)
Most emotional: in shenmue the last moments in life of Iwao Hazuki after that lan di of give him the mortal blow and die in his son´s arms

It sounds weird, but one of the most emotional moments for me was in Mafia II, Vito and Joe are going to meet Henry in the park. As you approach you hear Henry screaming, as you round the corner you see a bunch of China-men butchering Henry alive. That moment really got to me, I had to pause the game for a while...

My second emotional example is the ending of Kingdom Hearts. I cry at the end, Sora spends so much time trying to find and save his friends, and then it all gets taken away. I tear up excessively when Kairi wanders into their secret cave and sees Sora's drawing.

I must just be an emotional person, because I have had a lot of experiences where I have cried or almost cried whilst video gaming. My third example is in the game "The Darkness". When Jackie's uncle has Jenny (I think that's Jackie's girlfriend's name) at the orphanage, and her shoots her in the head, and the Darkness makes you watch without allowing you to help her. Add to that, that Jackie then proceeds to blow his brains out.

The scariest for me goes to Condemned, the Mannequin part.

Posted on Sep 27, 2010, 9:07:13 PM PDT
N. Amiot: Oh, man, yeah- the Mannequin/department store chapter of Condemned: Criminal Origins was some genuine spooky, agreed.

Especially the part where the mannequins are all suddenly circled around you, like they're trying to help you or something.

Good, good stuff.

SnS says:
Scariest - I gotta go with Fatal Frame. That entire game was scary as hell. There's something special about only being armed with a flashlight and a camera. And when you fight the ghost of the little boy who wants to play tag *shudders* his voice is still in my nightmares. "Tag! You're it!"

Emotional - Mass Effect 1 when you choose to let the Destiny Ascension get destroyed. It breaks my heart every time the Asari captain has that moment of hope right before her helmsman informs her that Joker cut comms. Never before in a game have I felt like such an ass.

Intense - FFVIII fighting Ultima Weapon. That bastard had me swearing.

Why? says:
Scariest: probably heavy rain when you're trapped on the table in that old guy's basement. trying to "wiggle" out of the ropes while he came at you with a bonesaw was pretty horrifying.

Intense: Deathclaws is a good one. I think the crown jewel has got to go the collapsing building scene in uncharted 2, like some folks mentioned before. i did not know games could do that. also, i don't want to use heavy rain twice, but when you're looking for your son in the crowd at the beginning. but hey, that game could probably top most others in all three of these categories.

Emotional: This is a tough one, cause you don't always remember/pay attention to the more dramatic aspects. but...if i had to pick, the one experience i would throw out there is your first little sister encounter in bioshock. actually kind of surprised no one mentioned that yet.

Not sure if anyone has said this or not:

Intense & Emotional: Heavy Rain at the drug dealer's apartment. I knew from the very beginning I was going to kill him and had made up my mind, so after the extended chase scene when he's begging for his life as soon as the button came up I shot him and couldn't believe I just did it. No other game has pulled me in in such a moment...it was crazy.

Spoilers
Emotional: The Boss's last scene in MGS3, I couldn't even pull the trigger at the end (and yes the game does force you to do it, I left my system alone for at least an hour thinking it'll just go on, it did not). Aeris (get her name right people!) is a another great choice. As is Agro in Shadow of the Colossus when he bucks off wanderer to save him while falling (So excited for the HD remake of this).

Scary: RE1 director's cut. A friend and I popped it in to play at like 2am. First scene, we had to shut it down and go to bed. That was nuts back in the day.

Intense: Just about any boss fight in DMC1 on Dante Must Die Mode. If you tried to not use items it got even worse. And by worse I mean totally awesome.

Original Doom was such a great game. I agree with you, playing it in pitch black is definitely scary :D

Dagon123 says:
Scary: I've played many a scary game, from resident evil to silent hill to Dead Space but of all the games, I've never been more afraid then I was in Amnesia. Its because that game is so ambiently set, and you can't defend yourself, you literally think its your breathing heavily in the game and not just Daniel's character, first time I saw the zombie thing (I'm assuming one of the servants), 0_0

Emotional: The end of FFIX when Zidane gos back for Kuja, then disappears, then later shows up at the play and "Melody of Life" starts playing, yes I was moved to tears

Intense: Probably the last 4 boss fights in FFX, they were literally so close that one misplaced move would make or break the fight

Tyler says:
Emotional- Heavy Rain *SPOILERS* When you have to decide if you want to drink poison that will kill you in one hour in order to get the location of where your son is.

Scariest conker's bad fur day--the poo monster
Emotional/Intense --Metal Gear Solid 4, the cut sence were Merly and Johnny hold the line against the FROGS, also kinda funny

L. Jones says:
Heavy Rain was both intense and emotional. The part where you have to cut off your on finger (or thumb, don't remember exactly which) to save your kid. Just the thought of having to put the scissors to your skin and cut still gives me the shivers.
