I am hoping someone, somewhere can help me with this. There is this song that has been stuck in my head for years, and I don't know who sings it. I listened to it a few times around 1997-1998 in a station that used to play alternative rock (I think), so I am assuming it must have come out around 1995-97. Sounded to me like a song from Alice in Chains, and it has some resemblances to "Man in the Box" and "Love, Hate, Love", but I don't think it is theirs. Anyways, after several years, I heard its ending again a few weeks ago! I entered this restaurant as they were playing the end. I rushed to get my phone and launch Shazam, and the stupid thing did not work! Anyways, at least I was able to confirm that the song exists and it sounded very similar to what I remembered. Since then, I have been checking countless of songs lists and groups from the period, but I have been unsuccessful so far. I have recorded what the end vocals of the song sound like. Seems like they sang this four words at least twice to end the song. Have been checking for 4-letter songs, but nothing.

I placed a recording of what the end of the song sounds like in YouTube. So please go to youtube and search: "Mystery Song Alternative/Rock 1995-1998". My video should pop at the top. I think the song is rather slow. Thanks so much!!

Here is the link where I recorded the end of the songs (excuse my attempts to sing).

Gave it a listen. The ending sounds like "Voodoo" by Godsmack.

Thanks so much for checking it. Unfortunately, that's not it. In the song, by the way, there is a distinctive guitar cord, wish I could describe it.

I went later to the restaurant and they told me they play music from DMX satellite. I guess this is like XM but a commercial service. But they couldn't tell me what exact mix they were playing.

David, this is 4 years old, but i am also looking for it, but i know the description you are talking about and could not make out any words. was about 96 when i use to hear it.
MAn in the box rhythm without guitar part, but has a plucked chord that is play string by string.

I wonder if you had any luck so long ago??

Wow, didn't even remember I had written this in Amazon! Rick, thanks a lot for your reply! The answer, unfortunately, is that no, I still have not been able to find the song. What I did in trying to find it (a few years ago) was to obtain the list of Alternative Rock bands (from Wikipedia), get rid of the bands that were created after 1998, and then using iTunes, try to check ALL the songs from each band. Maybe I tried only the albums created after 1990. Some groups/songs were not available in iTunes. Maybe now the have more. And Amazon music should also be a good option. The Wikipedia list may not have been complete. I sometimes check lists of best songs Alternative Rock for those years, but no luck. Also tried a while back subscribing to Pandora, AOL, etc., playlists of Alternative Rock songs, but nothing. One day we shall find it!! Yes, it is like Man in the Box rhythm, and the chord is very, very distinctive... David

Very cool to find another crazy person with my same obsession :-) . For a while I thought that maybe I had just imagined the song, but then as I said about 4 years ago I went to this restaurant (actually in Keystone, CO) and I heard the end of it! After that I did spend several, several hours trying to find it, haven't done a major search in some time. We are going to Keystone in about a month, so who knows, maybe destiny will be that I hear it there again! I'll check the station later. I see they provide an email address, why don't you send them an email? They probably have a disc jokey or music programmer, if you explain the situation, they may want to help. Not the first time I have embarked on a song search, and actually I still have some from my childhood that I have not figured out, but by far, this song is at the top of my list. Regards,

WOW!! That's it, THAT'S IT, that's it!! Search is over!!!
How did you find it???
Wow again!! Thanks, BIG thanks!!

The song sounds a lot like it could be Alice in Chains.

Just checking something that I had been relying on for my search (as I mentioned), the list of Alternative Rock Bands in Wikipedia, "Brother Cane" is not there!

If you go to youtube, I see there is a version of the band (rehearsing?) playing this son, cool!

You don't want to know - LOL !!! It was tough! It was a Lost index of Alternatives from 1995 to 1996. it took an hour to go through then BINGO !!! I thought it was cool that we shared the same search and that i was convinced it was the right song based on the description! What a relief !!!! Such a COOL GROOVE of a song! There are still a few more on my list.
One other idea you may read into (LONG SHOT) - think of Qmessage

Just an hour?!?! Ha! You don't want to know how many hours I have put on this!
I just tried to Shazam the song from my phone, it did not recognize it. This is actually comforting in a way, because I had been wondering for a long time what would have happened if I had been able to launch Shazam from my blackberry last time I heard it (again, like 5 years ago). Now I know that answer! (but it did work from my iPad, probably better microphone).

Hey, I feel that someone from TV could do a quick piece on this story. Wouldn't that be cool? CBS This Morning: "They found a lost song after looking for it for 20 years" ! :-)

With your other searches, this probably won't help, but some time ago I did try 2 or 3 websites where you could actually sing the song and in theory it could give you the names. Don't recall what the websites were. Obviously they never worked for me. I figured they would only work for mainstream music. Times have changed so maybe they have improved now...
