Roughing It by Mark Twain is the funniest book I've ever read. It surprises me how hilarious this book is--you'd think that a book written in the old days would not be that funny but this is. Or you can read The Complete Short Stories of Mark Twain which pulls out stories from Roughing It and other books--a lot of them are laugh out-loud funny. If you haven't read them--read them.

Both of the "Bridget Jones" books were laugh-out-loud hilarious!! I particularly enjoyed Bridget Jones's interview with the actor Colin Firth in the 2nd book and laughed hysterically when she ended the interview by man-handling him!

Many seem to like his sense of humor, yet I can't even crack a smile.

I'd love for you to excerpt one or two paragraphs from one of his books and post it here.

Maybe I haven't read far enough into his works but of those I have I can't for the life of me figure out why he is funny.

No disrespect, but if you find "Without Feathers", by Woody Allen hilarious, or "The World...Garp", or "Parliament of Whores", just so,
I'd like to know.

I tried thrice to get a laugh out of it about 10 years ago and could not.

Would very much appreciate if you could either direct me to a funny episode in the book or paste an excerpt here.

Maybe I was just obtuse at the time, but I tried again yesterday and can't find it funny. So many have recommended it to me, again, that I feel like I'm missing something, even those who find Bill Bryson's books a hoot, which I do too.

Oh my, no one listed any of my favorites. Almost any historical novel by Julie Garwood will make you laugh, and they are fast moving, well written, interesting. "For The Roses" has some hysterical parts. "No Time For Sergeants" made me laugh so hard I cried-years ago. The last books I read that had me rolling on the floor were written by romance writer Jill Barnett. One was "Dreaming" and I can't remember the other. I heard my brother laughing and gasping for air in another bedroom--he would stop and then start again-so I went in and asked him what was so funny. He could barely talk so just pointed to the book he was reading--I tried to grab it out of his hand but he held on tight so I had to wait until the next day to get it. We are both over 50 years old, read sci-fi, thrillers, etc. I have a BA in Eng. Lit. etc. and if you do not try some of the romance writers--like Nora Roberts, Jill Barnett, Julie Garwood, and others--you are missing some really excellent writing.
