Airsoft for deer?

Here in East Hampton NY there are deer all over the place; they eat everything and come within 100 feet and just stare at you with no fear. Do you think I could use an airsoft rifle to sting them a bit to encourage them to eat somewhere else? If so, will a cheap spring rifle work? If so, what kind of balls should I use (size? paint/non paint?) I owned a gun as a kid, but that was a long long time ago; I don't want to run afoul of the local anti-hunting regs.

M. Donaho says:
A cheap spring rifle MAY startle them but deer have thick skin comparatively so you may instead go with a gas blowback pistol that is more powerful and make a lot of noise. WE-Tech 5.1 highcapa series are loud and fire at around 330fps. That is enough to sting through a t-shirt and should be enough to frighten them away.

You may also want to use a water gun instead to avoid animal cruelty charges, depending on your neighbors.

Get a hunting license and a 12 gauge if you care about your environment, overpopulation causes all kinds of problems. Or for the non-hunting people they sell 'deer-off' at hardware stores. It smells and kills half the plants you put it on to protect, plus the overpopulated deer get to be hit by cars or starve to death instead of harvested and eaten.
