Is this a chapter book or picture book? Do you remember anything about the illustrations? How old of a reader was it written for (IE, how old were you when you read it) and do you know if it was old or recently published when you read it?

It's a common theme. But, that doesn't mean we can't narrow down the options!

The one that comes to mind is "The Tinderbox" by Hans Christian Anderson. It's based on a very old folk tale.
