Our discussions in this forum often focus on recordings on CD, but lately I have found quite a bit of pleasure in listening while watching - not that I sit down and watch an entire performance - I do other things while watching.

I think you listen better while watching - especially if like me you can't read a score - it's easy to see who is playing what when...

Opera DVD discussions also welcome!

This evening I have been enjoying a marathon session with Mozart's last 8 piano concertos performed by Daniel Barenboim and the BPO in the late 80s digitally remastered from 35 mm film and put on DVD and Blu-ray in 2012. There is no audiene, but it is a "live" recording.

Lately I've been enjoying DVDs of the Alban Berg Quartett doing Beethoven. The entire cycle is on three 2-DVD EMI sets, live with a (very quiet) audience. I believe these are different from their CD cycle, which are studio recordings.

Watching the videos does concentrate the mind.

I recently watched the blu-ray issue of Amadeus. The transfer is gorgeous and it's a director's cut with scenes not seen in the theatrical version. Forman and Shaffer's commentary is interesting too. Amadeus: Director's Cut [Blu-ray]

Sviatoslav Richter - Enigma has finally been reissued on US region DVD. My copy is on the way. Amadeus and Abbado's Mahler are two blu-rays on my wish list.

Yes, the Richter "Enigma" documentary is one of THE best, probably the best of Monsaingeon's series on great soloists, which includes the ones on Rostropovich, Menuhin, Oistrakh & Fischer-Dieskau (all, happily, in my possession).

Also, Abbado's Mahler 9th from Lucerne is unmissable, in particular the last minutes of the Finale will have you transfixed.

My high opinion of this is trumped by the fact that, for a long while, the aftermarket on this out-of-print DVD was $4000 for a new copy :

...I second that recommendation : beautifully filmed and well played.

Andras Schiff Plays Bach French Suites on piano
A 2010 release from Euroarts of a live recording.
A bit annoying that it starts with birds chirping (I'm in it for the music! and that's not really music...), but that's 5 seconds of irritation vs. 2 hours of piano bliss.
I'm not sure how this compares to the old Decca recordings.

Bad timing for me: Theodora is being released on blu-ray, just after I got my standard DVD copy. Handel: Theodora [Blu-ray]
