Looking at a recent list online about the influence certain artists have had on certain a comic books, I thought I might start my own list. Who are your top three favorite artists to have drawn the following MARVEL comic book titles?

a. Gil Kane
b. John Romita, Sr.
c. Ross Andru
2) THE MIGHTY AVENGERS

c. George Perez
3) THE FANTASTIC FOUR
a. John Buscema
b. George Perez
c. John Byrne
4) THE INCREDIBLE HULK
a. Sal Buscema
b. John Byrne
c.
5) THE MIGHTY THOR
a. John Buscema
b. Jack Kirby
c. Sal Buscema
6) THE INVINCIBLE IRON MAN
a. George Tuska
b. John Romita, Jr.
c.
7) CAPTAIN AMERICA
a. Gil Kane
b. John Romita, Sr.
c. John Byrne
8) DAREDEVIL: The Man Without Fear
a. Gil Kane
b. Frank Miller
c.
9) THE UNCANNY X-MEN
a. John Byrne
b. Dave Cockrum
c. Neal Adams
10) MARVEL TEAM-UP (Staring Spider-Man)
a. Sal Buscema
b. Gil Kane
c. John Byrne

Remember this is just a Fan List, but if you feel you need to justify your list feel free to do so.

Where I have left a third option blank I do not have a third favorite artist.

*NOTE: I realize that a lot of the characters on this list would not even exist without the contribution of the late great JACK "The King" KIRBY, so do not misinterpret his absence from my list. This list is about what the compiler has a preference for, it is about aesthetics or tastes not accuracy.

EXCELSIOR!

a. Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez
b. Jim Aparo
c. *Neal Adams / Alex Ross

9. DEAD MAN

c. Neal Adams
10. THE PHANTOM STRANGER
a. Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez
b. Jim Aparo
c. Neal Adams

Notes:

BAT MAN - *I have put Neal Adams and Alex Ross at a tie for third place only because while for many years Neal Adams was my favorite Bat Man artist until I discovered Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, it is Mr. Adams' recent venture with Bat Man namely the incomprehensible "BAT MAN: Odyssey Series" that has lowered his ranking on my list.

*GREEN LANTERN / GREEN ARROW - The only reason I have not included Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez on this list is because he has never drawn a regular series or even a short about GL and even though he did draw GA in a BRAVE and BOLD story, I didn't feel it would have been fair to include him; but I really, really wanted to.

Nicos says:
Hulk - Jim Steranko. Yeah he only drew him a couple of times, but man oh man did he nail it. His version defined how I saw all other versions of the Hulk.

It would be really easy to do a list for many of the Dark Horse characters since only one or two people have drawn them.
Hellboy: Mignola
Sin City: Miller
Next Men: Byrne
Usagi Yojimbo: Stan Sakai
Concrete: Chadwick
Grendel: Matt Wagner, Teddy Christiansen, Tim Sale, Edvin Biukivic, Patrick Mckeown

Thank you for sharing James, you have a lot of good choices.

I am curious as to who you think JOSE LUIS GARCIA-LOPEZ drew best. I would say DEADMAN and SUPERMAN, but what say ye?

Posted on Mar 30, 2014, 2:04:11 PM PDT
Hi! I'm afraid I've never read Deadman's own titles, I've only seen him guest starring in other books. I love Garcia-Lopez's Superman work. But I'd say Garcia-Lopez's best stuff I've ever seen was in Atari Force.
