Hello all! I've seen a couple of fun challenges in the Romance and Paranormal Romance forums and am shamlessly copying one.

It's easy, you just list your favorite book that you read each month, then your favorite book of the year.

If you want to join in, start your own post using the template below. Then just edit that post to input your favorite reads each month. I'd say the books can be whatever genre, although I know mine are pretty much going to all be some fantasy sub-genre.

I'm thinking that my TBR list is going to get a lot larger as the year goes on. :) Can't wait to see what your fav books are.

I'll put in a message here, and may or may not get around to putting in books. Since the last three books that I read with enough pleasure to recommend consisted of two mysteries (rereads) written in the 1930's and a new science fiction novel I highly recommend, Captain Vorpatril's Alliance, I may not have any fantasy books I wish to tell others about.

Although I read fantasy more than any other genre, I sometimes go for a while without reading new fantasy. Also, sometimes I will go for months without reading fantasy I like enough to recommend. I refuse to put up a book where my reaction was, "Well, it was worth finishing, I think, but I'll never read it again, nor another book by that author."

Time to put in our January picks! I had a hard time deciding between Touch of the Demon and Stained Glass Monsters, but Demon won out. Glad to see some of you have added yours!

Captain says:
January - Blood Song (A Raven's Shadow Novel, Book 1) Anthony Ryan
February - Waylander (Drenai Saga Book 3) David Gemmell
March - The Briar King (The Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone, Book 1) Grey Keyes. Now in my top five epic fantasies.
April - The Red Knight (The Traitor Son Cycle Book 1) Miles Cameron. Fans of Blood Song who are lamenting the wait for book 2 can take heart as this new epic fantasy is just as good. Hard to believe but it's true. Two absolutely great new epic fantasy authors emerge at the same time. I also just finished Memory Of Light, The Wheel Of Time finale, and although it was fantastic, The Red Knight is even better and so gets my April favorite slot.
May - A tie between A Throne of Bones (Arts of Dark and Light Book 1)
by Vox Day, and The Way of Kings (The Stormlight Archive, Book 1) by Brandon Sanderson.

This is a cool idea. Thanks for starting the thread!

January - Hard Magic by Larry Correia

February - Shadow Ops: Control Point by Myke Cole

March - Shadow Ops: Frontier Fortress by Myke Cole

April - Casket of Souls (Nightrunners #6) - Lynn Flewelling

May - Point of Dreams (A Novel of Astreiant) - Melissa Scott & Linda Barnes [reread]

June - Widdershins (Whyborne & Griffin #1) - Jordan L. Hawk

July - Black Dog Blues - Rhys Ford

August - Clean: A Mindspace Investigations Novel - Alex Hughes (also Sharp by the same author)

September - Sixty-One Nails - Mike Shevdon - excellent fantasy though saying it's better than 'Neverwhere' by Neil Gaiman doesn't work for me. They each occupy slightly different niches.

October - Not a fantasy but good anyway: Tapas on the Ramblas (A Russell Quant Mystery) - Anthony Bidulka

November - Smoke and Shadows (Tony Foster #1) - Tanya Huff
Doctor Who: The Silent Stars Go By - Dan Abnett

December -

K. McNamara says:
January - Mandarin Gate (Eliot Pattison)
February - Moon over Manifest (Claire Vanderpool) (2011 Newbery award winner, but I'm somewhat behind)
March - Frost Burned (I still love Mercy)
April - The Spirit Lens and The Soul Mirror by Carol Berg (reminded me of Curse of Chalion, one of my favorites).
May - The Daemon Prism (Carol Berg)
June - Toss up between The Bones of the Old Ones (Howard Andrew Jones) and Royal Street (Suzanne Johnson)
July - A Year Up by Gerald Chertavian. Not fantasy, but I found it very inspirational.
August - A toss up between Magic Rises (Ilona Andrews) & Chosen (Alex Verus series; Benedict Jacka). Both what I would call very good reads.
September - Firebrand by Gillian Philip.
October -A Turn of Light (Night's Edge) by Julie Czerneda - a fantasy romance
November - It Happens in the Dark (A Mallory Novel), a mystery. Also, I've started rereading Cherryh's Foreigner series.
December - Jonathan Stroud's The Ring of Solomon (a Bartimaeus novel). What can I say, I like the juvie's.

Best of 2013 - I'm going to have to go with the juvenile fiction Moon over Manifest as a book that is going to stay with me for a long long time. Although I think I got the biggest smiles from The Ring of Solomon.

Kindle-aholic -

I see you have mentioned a book that has no reviews. Looking at the cover, I am guessing steampunk. Can you give a little more info on the book and why you liked it? I like the idea of steampunk, but have never read anything that I would classify under that genre. Of couse, maybe I'm wrong and it has nothing to do with steampunk.

Thanks!

I wouldn't call it steampunk, although there are airships (which is a steampunk staple). I have a review of it (I got an ARC) but I can't post it here until the book releases.

I would say it's more Verne-like. As I was reading it, I remembered all the times I watched the Pat Boone Journey to the Center of the Earth movie - and how much I wanted there to be a girl character my age. :) It's not a retelling though.

This one starts in a world that has magic. Emilie stows away on a ship that is headed for the "Hollow World" at the center of the earth. They are on a rescue mission, as well as trying to be the first successful explorers to return. There's monsters, different kinds of sentient beings (some helpful some not). Lots of action. No teen angst. :)

It's YA, but honestly I could see younger kids reading it. There is no romance.

I am going to be buying the paperback for my kids' library as soon as it comes out.

OK - I have added my February choice - The fortress series is great. I did try Jim Butcher's Storm Front #1 which is about a wizard solving crime (kinda fantasy & mystery) but it wasn't one I would rank really high.

March is just beginning but I have to recommend Matthew Hughes 9 Tales of Henghis Hapthorn though it may only be for Kindle. I love his stories of Henghis Hapthorn. Majestrum: A Tale Of Henghis Hapthorn was the first.
