Anyone have recommendations for new writers who have the chops? As with most people here, I'm ignoring anyone who self-recommends.
Authors that I especially enjoy are Wodehouse (non fantasy) Sayers (ditto), Niven & Pournelle, J. Austin (non-fantasy), L Sprague De Camp and Connie Willis.
What I'm craving are books with strong character development, a solid plot, a dollop of humour and an easy writing style. I want to get lost in the book. The subject matter is largely immaterial, although sparkly vampires are pushing it a bit, but knowledge of how to write well is not.
