Ann, your claim that liberalism leads to filthy low-lifes hanging around WalMart demonstrates that you're either very young, or you've selectively edited your memory. Before social welfare programs existed, things were so bad that your WalMart vision would look like an Episcopalian Easter service by comparison. Getting rid of the safety net doesn't clean up WalMart. It just puts more people out in the streets so that you get to see more of what you don't like. Remember, when you tell someone to "get a job", you need to be willing to hire them or help them locate a place where someone is hiring. And you need to support equal education access. And transportation to get to jobs. And job training programs. And child care. And so on.

Because they talk about "changing the world" and "making it a better place" and all they do is sit around getting high and driving their prius hybrids spewing their "smug".

Peter says:
Read Slouching Towards Bethlehem, 1984, Brave New World, and Hamlet. The roots of the hippie movement arnt as pure as people try to make it out to be... Hippies did not do anything except sex and drugs and discuss ideas those before them had. Liberal doesn't not equal hippie but most hippies are liberal because they want other people to pay for their lazy uneducated self. Socialism is great untill you run out of other peoples money. Capitalism is the sharing of prosperity, socialism is the sharing of misery. Just like with our education system and job requirements we lower the standards instead of raising people to meet it, which is why, as a country, we are destroying ourselves. People like to blame their issues on others; usually the rich and successful. I find it funny when liberals preach tollerance but only when it fits into their ideas, then you are just a backwards redneck uneducated republican nutjob that believes in a made up God that should die.

I'm not a huge fan or beck and the like as they are blowhard fearmongers, but they have an enormous amount of audio and video to back up what they say, which for the most part has not been disputed. People bash them because they hear the worst or slanted clips but don't research anything themselves. Government should be distrusted as much as huge corporations; both look out for their own power, money, and control. We need both government regulation but a robust free market economy as well to balance growth and safety.

There are varying degrees of liberal and conservative and many subgroups within those, we only seem to see and hear the worst of both sides and judge everyone by that. Labels are not bad, misusing them are.

The occupy protests were mostly hippie type people who on the camera couldn't give an intelligent answer to why they were ther or just said to legalize it. You don't see people deficating on cars, throwing bricks at police, rape, widespread disease, or widespread drug use at tea party rallies.

George soros is behind much of this upset and is party responsible for the economic collapse. He has profited from the destruction of economies and is doing the same with ours right now. He is an example of a far left liberal that uses labor unions, sucking money from the hard working employees. (I'm not against unions, we need them, just that many are corrupt with their leaders having too many political ties and shady deals now) Now on the other spectrum of liberal we have Bill Clinton, a more centrist liberal, that along with the republican congress balanced the budget and helped the country. If you get past the scandal, he was a pretty good president.

Such as amethestwoman, many hippies have an overly inflated sense of self righteousness and ego that match those of the CEOs they hate. Hate to break it to you, but communism do not work. It tooks the deaths of millions of innocent people to show that... And even then Russia's and China's economies collapsed tremendously, creating terrible living conditions for the common person. But guess what, those politicians in power still had a good life, better than the business men they crucified and destroyed to appeal to the people's discontent. They believe that they can tell you how to live your life better then you can, I'm sorry I'd rather have my own life and create my own path, which is why the principles of America and the free market are great. Many people have come from rags to riches and you can turn your life around with some hard work and education. I refuse to pay for the jobless hippie that wants to spend all his time smoking and thinking, not doing. Don't complain you have huge college debts when you went to 50k/yr school and majored in art history. Go to community college or work in a different field.

Tl;dr we need a balance of conservative and liberal ideas. We need some social aid and regulation but limit it so people are not dependent or lazy. We need free market and big business to spur growth and creativity to bring a higher standard of living to all, but unions and laws to stop unjust treatment. The big problem in society is the lack of education, work ethic and the breakdown of the family. With no parenting kids will not succeed unless they have a natural drive to study, which many do not. Look at Asian cultural compared to western.

Got to blame someone.. blame the poor guy who lost his 30 year job sorting out the books for some corporation gone south. THEY had to go. And THEY did not want to be DOLING OUT pensions.. so now, call those who are honest working, former middle class, ..call them FREELOADERS.. and be sure to mention how sick you are..of THEM.
Until your time comes that is.
I enjoy the calmer intellect here and the people such as Dawne, Meremaiden and yes, Daniel M. have brightened up a mean landscape of blamers here. THEY must be the lazy 1% that is sick of hearing complaints by those who PAY TAXES!!
I cant take it.. I got to see Neil play KEEP ON ROCKIN in the FREE WORLD.. and another kid who will never grow up, and never be cool.. dirty little kids .. getting free shots now? Horrible .. what a waste. One per cent of tax dollars going to those parasites.. well there is the WHOLE problem, the ONLY PROBLEM the gvnent has! Whew.. I sure learnt a lot from the 1% of ..no one.
Nitey nite..good mornin yawl

Well said! Now im not sure about this comment but it seems to me that my friends, liberals all or at least people who can think and rationalize for themselves, do not believe in religion. It is simply impossible to be religious and follow dogma and be rational at the same time. Taking this a step further, how is it possible, in the world of Christians, to follow the rules in a book written thousands of years ago, by superstitious, oppressive, harsh and extremely judgmental tent dwellers?? Read the bible carefully and you will find so many contradictions, scientific anomalies and impossibilities, that the bible cannot possibly be the result of the word of something called God which no one has ever seen! (except for bush who claims to talk to god every night. What about? Baseball?)

This is an answer from someone who has lived in abroad and travels as often as possible the answer is Europe. Oh but you will undoubtedly moan, but you pay so much in taxes. Well surprise surprise, no more than here, only in the US they are hidden taxes. Looked at your phone bill lately? Besides, I would sooner live in a country which taxes me to death, but gives me something back for it such as inexpensive or free education, health care, maternity leave and strong worker protection. Oh yes gotcha!! Europe is going broke! Yes maybe but we have been bankrupt for a long time now, owing in the trillions and, like good christians we are supposed to be, can find money to cut from programs which might the self fortunate (notice i did not say lazy) yet find enough to fling at the military and weapons, death and destruction!

Oh i see. The Vietnam war ended with rednecks driving trucks loaded with guns demanding an end to wars? Could have fooled me. I was in my 20's at the time and do not remember seeing that. And the people who risked their lives to go south in favor of equal rights for blacks were rednecks? Where do you find your historical facts? The Rush Limbaugh university of lower leaning and spread of ignorance?

Really? I am 65 yrs old, with technical experience, fluent in 5 languages and cannot find a job which demands skills higher than a greeter at Wal Mart? Should i get on my knees and pray to something called God which no one has ever seen? Besides, if you are fine intellectually do some serious reflecting on this. The universe, which we are just beginning to understand, has been measured (as far as we are able) to stretch from one side to other of 21 thousand trillion light years! There are over 150 billion galaxies and who knows how many planets or stars. A light year is 6 trillions miles so you do the math. Now convince me that in a universe as enormous and mind boggling as that, has a God who is concerned with us and how we behave? Isn't that just a bit fantastical, arrogant and ignorant to believe? When I receive a msg from God telling me that i had sex outside marriage i would answer - why aren't you taking care of your creation? I think i ve had enough of disease, earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, volcanoes etc...Now the only people who lose hope without some form of daddy living in heaven looking after them are lost cases anyway. I have to see someone who is anti government of any sort, refuse to see a doctor with Medicare of reject any form of retirement help, however meager! For what it's worth there is my opinion. By the way, congratulations for offering a reasonable assessment free of ranting, raving and insults. It is much appreciated and makes us somewhat of an anomaly in this day and age.

J. Galligan says:
It's a really good question and it's precisely what mainstream tried to promote with the occupy Wall Street movement. In reality it wasn't about a bunch of hippies who wanted to take down the Wall St Banksters, but it was a bunch of hippies that were willing to go out there and stand up with all Americans for the rights of all the American people who have lost and continue to lose their homes, their jobs and the established lives and families they've worked hard for. The hippie movement has regained momentum and why not? - We need their loving compassion for all living things, we need their beliefs in equality, we need their abilities to accept one another for who they are. Aren't these in fact the things that society is lacking? We actually owe these "HIPPIES" a great deal of gratitude for NEVER swaying from their beliefs in the freedom that we were all born entitled to!

I say hail to the Hippies and may we all become one soon!

J. Galligan says:
Yes Treehugger, warmonger is the opposite of hippie. Like say, John McCain and John Lennon - definite opposites! lol

The problem with hippies and politics is that hippies don't believe in politics. Politics promote greed & power to control all people and hippies promote peace & freedom to survive and share equality collectively.

A peaceful world existence and happy, healthy families is not an awful thing to promote! It is more than possible if we just believe. John Lennon said it all in "Imagine."
We can do this!

It's really a no brainer, so hopefully this awakening picks up some momentum sooner than later! Peace and love all you people!

Hippies want truth!

Neoamor says:
The human race is the most short sighted species on the face of the Earth.

This thread mostly demonstrates disharmony/hostility over pretend labels. Humankind has divided up into artificially labeled groups of, nations, races, ideologies, religions, etc., then proceeds to compete violently with one another over which label is "best", or "right". At the expense ultimately, of THEIR OWN peace of mind, happiness, and well being. There are even sub-sub groups that compete over arrangements of molecules (material possessions) with members of their own broader group, in an effort to amass and horde the most molecules. Or at least more molecules, or "better" arrangements, than the next guy.

Our cultures direct our attention at the aspects of ourselves that make us slightly different from each other, in order for us to be more easily and willingly coerced into arguing and fighting amongst ourselves. Even to the extent that we ourselves will endure various hardships and losses, to cultivate and sustain animosity toward the illusory concept of "different humans". When all the while, our advancements and technology, at this point in our history/evolution, could provide us ALL with comfortable and enjoyable coexistence and experiences with each other, as ONE species. That is, if we didn't dedicate so much of our energy and resources to killing each other in more efficient/effective ways, in competition over various molecules.

If there's a shining example of insanity, it's the human race.

We can't get it through our thick primate skulls, that we are ONE species, living on ONE planet. End of story. Anything that hurts ONE of us, hurts ALL of us. When an individual human, or a small group of humans hordes resources, at the exclusion/expense of any other humans, they are harming members of their own species, their own family. They are harming themselves.

Imagine if John Boy Walton allowed Mary Ellen to starve to death on the porch, when he had more food than he could ever eat, stashed somewhere on Walton's Mountain, because his cultural belief was that amassing and hording MORE than he could ever need, was an indication of increased personal value, or success. Or it simply fed his primitive ego to have the power of life and death over his sister. Yet this is exactly what some humans do, through their inability to conceptualize themselves as members of a single team. Humans think so small. They seem to only grasp the concept of protecting their own little "turf".

Our primary opponent is, in reality, our own limited perspectives, not each other. This thread demonstrates that fact to a degree. Imagine how much fun human existence would be, if we didn't fight with each other over meaningless crap, at every level.

The age of global cooperation, cohesion, joy, contentment, and UNITY is long overdue. We need to become civilized at some point to survive, it may as well be sooner instead of later. Acting violently toward your own species, is no longer in fashion. Human vs. human hostility and aggression is so 2001. In 2012 there's a NEW trend sweeping the globe, it's called cooperation, all the smart/popular kids are doing it. Don't be left out.

bruce wayne says:
The whole idea of leftist liberals is you should trust human nature to be good so we can share all things in common, everyone will then pitch in and work to their best for the good of all. Reality is some never do more than they have to to get by, I know plenty that have said we shouldn't have to work, the rich should just have to sare theirs with us. When they get an equal share of the whole they will do nothing but get by on it and drag everyone else down with them. I see it all the time growing up poor, those living off the gov. wasted food stamps on gum, pop, 5 dolar a bag chips, ect. wlile both my parents worked with out help and we lived off top ramen with hotdog slices(penny soup) if we were lucky because their taxes went to my freinds in the subsididised apartments where there were plates with half eaten t bone steaks laying around the house.
We use lefty hippie as a curse word because it is fantasy to think these users and mooches i have grown up with would ever do anything not for themselves, they just want to live off other peoples work till everyone starves.
You all see concepts you read in books in some fancy collage someone else paid for but i l've lived down here among the morlochs my whole live and your social commie crap cannot work.
You have to assume ALL people are good and will not take advantage for themselves, that has never happened in the history of the world.

Posted on Jun 16, 2012, 1:17:15 PM PDT
I think your idea of what liberals want is incorrect. The truth is that people do not become rich in a vacuum, they use the public infrastructure to build their companies (assuming they got rich by good ideas and hard work, not stealing from the people.) They hire workers educated by the public, drive on roads and bridges paid for by the public, with gasoline subsidized by the public, etc - but they do not shoulder their proportional share of the cost for their good fortune. Everyone prospers, including the very wealthy, in an economy where people have jobs with wages enough to support a family, put their kids through college, etc.

Here are the real moochers - corporations that get fat at the public trough and pay no taxes. believe me they cost you and I more than the welfare mom who lets her kids eat potato chips instead of ramen noodles. Believe me, they also have lots of 33ç mac and cheese dinners. Beyond that even, we have giant multinational corporations, owing allegiance to no country, who are able to buy political influence and write rules for the US that do not prosper the American people. They form a kind of one-world-government that simply siphons resources and wealth from everyone everywhere. Used to be they couldn't get their mittens on US wealth, only third world countries, but now they have corrupted the democratic process with their money. If money is speech, most Americans have no speech. These goliaths are moochers and should be treated as such instead of bowed down to.

The trouble with Liberals is they only listen to people who think the same as they do . Anyone who disagrees with them , they put down . They do not consider the facts that Socialism has never worked anywhere on earth . They believe that good intentions , no matter how irrational , have some merit .

C. Hensley says:
True hippies were found to be quite obnoxious when it came to some of their protesting, and oh wait... liberals as well. This day in age it is somewhat easy to become annoyed with a liberal who continues to believe that it's ok for the US government to continue to spend our tax money with no end in sight.

So my question to you my friend is, when is it going to be enough? When is it going to be ok to stop taking ("robbing") mine and millions of other hard working Americans' money? Will it be when these liberals are taking 45% percent of your check? Or maybe 55% or even 70%. Then you might finally join the chant against filthy self loathing individuals.

This is just one example of how liberals earn their hatred. These people don't believe in the morals and standards on which our great capitalistic society was founded upon, and for that will always remain a filthy word in my vocabulary.

In reply to an earlier post on Jun 16, 2012, 11:04:13 PM PDT
Really? This gentle hippie is 70 now and retired, but I worked all my life, many 60 hour weeks, raised 2 kids by myself, and have always had room in my heart to care for and contribute to my fellow man. My belief about so-called conservatives ( I see them as radicals) is that they are selfish and arrogant and combative, only care about themselves and their own personal family, care nothing bout their brothers and sisters in the country as a whole. Or that is the impression I get from the current congress and the "conservative" state governments which de-fund public education, take away worker rights and women's rights and purposely destroy the economy hopinb people will blame the President and not see what they have done.

In reply to an earlier post on Jun 16, 2012, 11:11:56 PM PDT
Interesting, that is how I see "conservatives."

What is this socialism you are describing? And can we have some, please, so that my tax dollars go to education and infrastructure and public services instead of a military-industrial complex and tax breaks for billionaires? I wonder why people do not see that robber-baron capital;ism brought this country to her knees just a few years ago. There is no "free market." The current market moves further and further towards protecting the interests of some companies, by laws that work against other smaller companies, because the rich companies can buy elections.

In reply to an earlier post on Jun 16, 2012, 11:20:45 PM PDT
C. Hensley, are you aware that taxes have never been lower? And that the people who benefit the most from the investments of previous, more open-hearted generations pay the least % of their income in taxes? Could these giants really be giants if they had only the infrastructure or educated workforce of sub-Saharan African "developing" nations? NO, of course not. I am not against capitalism, I am against capitalism with a thumb on the scale by buying politcal power to write the rules to benefit themselves. Don't you realize that when people have nothing to spend, then companies can't sell anything, then they hire even fewer people, there is even less to spend? When will THAT be enough - when Americans have to work for 35ç an hour if they find work at all?
