Agave nectar; Good or Bad?

I just purchased two 40 oz. bottles of raw, organic agave nectar to use as a sweetener in place of sugar. I have heard that it is worse than high fructose corn syrup but I've also heard it's better than regular sugar or sugar substitutes.

I do not suffer from high sugar levels, am not vegan or even diabetic.
I decided to try agave out for my own health's sake. Is this more beneficial for better health purposes or am I harming my health by consuming it? I would appreciate some feedback. Thanks!

Agave is heated, and not as raw as what has been talked about Agave..
Basicly it looks like its like any other type of sugar, if not worse!
I have two bottles unopen in my house that I just bought, and I'm now thinking of
returning them!!

Think I'll just stay with Stevia, and raw sugar if I need to use that.

You had it right the first time-it is comparibly bad as high fructose cornsyrup. Agave nectar is virtyualy identical chemically in sugar compisition to HFCS approx 55%free monosaccharide fructose and 45% glucose. This is a potential deadly mix for creating the phenomena of hepatic fructose loading where the very limited capacity of the liver to metabolize fructose is overloaded.
My own personal belief(not proven) is that hepatic fructose loading is the main driving force behind the world obesity epidemic and other maladies such as insulin resistance.

Great cook is right a combination of stevia and cane sugar is a great sweetner. Stevia and cane sugar have a synergistic(multiplying effect on each others sweetness) so only very small amounts of cane sugar give a lot of sweetness when combined with stevia

Well there are studies indicating that free monosaccharide fructose like agave nectar and honey and fruit juice may be substantially worse than cane sugar for causing fructose overloading of the liver. This may be due to absorption kinetics

Honey and fruit juice I can speak for, but am not that personally well acquainted with the agave nectar, however, in all fairness it sounds like a sugar that is already converted from starch in the plant kingdom, which advantage it shares with all the other sweeteners you mention with the glaring exception of the HFCS. I am hearing that agave has up to 90% Fructose in it, which sounds pretty high to me.

Fructose is critical to liver function, especially in its role of supplying energy to the brain, via the glycogen stores. Humankind as well as much of the animal kingdom survived quite well for thousands of years on fruit and honey.

In the Book, The Honey Revolution: Restoring the Health of Future Generations Dr. Ron Fessenden and co-author Mike McInnes treat at length on most of the common sweeteners, and I am here to report that my health has improved considerably since I commenced to incorporate their understanding into my regimen.

I don't like your chances of being taken seriously when you try to downgrade the role of natural sweeteners, particularly honey, as it has been revered for all time and only in the last hundred years or so, have artificially contrived sweeteners been promoted as 'better.' And what do we get in return? An epidemic of obesity, insulin resistance, depression and cancer, to name a few.

I find no reason to part with my natural honey.

Matt O might sound too intelligent to you but think of it like this,..fructose is as poisonous to your liver in the long term as alcohol, and excess will result in similar damage. If the liver cannot work properly, every other function in the body will show impairment. It is ok for you if you are a light user of fructose ( 20- 30 grams /day) but for the greater majority (who are already overweight) agave syrup is as serious to health as HFCS and should be avoided by anyone seriously looking out for their health.

Yes i also agree that high fructose "chemically processed" products will be those associated with metabolic syndrome and that once these products are reduced the natural sweeteners from fruit and honey will be of little consequence to health disorders. The health problems caused by fructose have not been shown to be resulting from natural sources (whole fruit or honey in dietary studies) but instead ARE attributable to EXCESSIVE intakes of FRUCTOSE made possible by the cheap and accessible sweetened high fructose calorie products- Soft drinks, processed fruit juices and snack products. Yes unless you have signs of metabolic syndrome i would not stop using beautiful honey:)

The fructose in HFCS and other "articial sources is chemically identical and is MADE IN THE SAME way as "natural fructose" made by living orgainisms. Living oragnisms make fructose using an enzyme called phospho gluco isomerase that converts glucose into fructose. The makers of HFCS buy large amounts of the enzyme purified from yeast and then use it convert glucose derived from corn starch into fructose. "Natural" fructose made by living organisms is chemically idenitical in every way to the fructose in HFCS and has the same disasterous effects when consumed in concentrated rapidly absorbed form such as fruit juice or beverages sweetened with honey or agave
Thank you for clarifying some of these issues such as the claim fructose is essential to liver function etc. You seem someone who at least knows more or less what you are talking about

Agave comes from a plant, same way molasses come out of sugar cane. A doctor recommended that I use agave over a year ago, I stay away from all the corn syrop that is almost in every food, and away from artificial chemical sweeteners, end result lost over 30 pounds and the adiction to sodas that are also loaded with corn syrop and other chemical.

Your losing weight is probably from giving up the concentrated rapidly absorbed fructose in sodas and using agave in less concentrated less rapidly absorbed froms. Agave is chemically identical to HFCS used in soda's and I have personally seeen it produce disasterous effects in concentrated liquid form sucn as agave seetened lemonade.These included outbreaks of massive obesity among the employees in two organic health food stores assoicated with consuming shakes from agave sweetened coconut milk or agave sweetened fruit juice-shortly after agave hit the market and was promoted as a "healthy alternative" to cane sugar
