Author Heda Margolius Kovaly died this past week in Prague. Her obituary appeared in the New York Times and the London Telegraph as well as in Czech newspapers in Prague and highlighted the paucity of women who have written their version of the events of their times. Heda survived both Hitler and Stain and writes about the consequences of totalitarianism. Her bookUnder A Cruel Star: A Life in Prague 1941-1968 is required reading for our times.

Thanks for the post. I am particularly interested in this time and place. I will read it for sure.

If you are interested in another fascinating read about women in history, look into A Woman in Berlin: Eight Weeks in the Conquered City: A Diary and Still Alive: A Holocaust Girlhood Remembered (The Helen Rose Scheuer Jewish Women's Series)

Both are absolutely incredible.

As far as I am concerned there is only one.

When I think of women I think of her beyond all others Marie Curie so passionate about her work and her husband that she died from it. "Madame Curie: A Biography" written by Eve Curie.

Helen Keller:

"Keller's book was extremely popular well into the 1960s, when Gallup polls consistently showed her to be one of the most admired women in America, edging out such notables as Queen Elizabeth, Princess Grace and Golda Meir. It seems that Helen Keller has become competition for Ann Frank and Golda Meir, something Jews would not have."
