After two atomic bombs, and firebombing of japanese cities with near impunity the Japanese emperor surrendered to the US in a fairly cryptic broadcast on 15 august 1945. The soviets had only entered the war on 8 august 45 , by agreement at Yalta, within three months of the end of the european war.
The japanese resisted the soviets fanatically in manchuria, korea and in the northern islands beyond 15 august, in fact did not cease major resistance in manchuria till 26 august.
Why did the US fail to continue to prosecute the war against japan while japan bore are arms against its ally? Why didn't nuclear and conventional bombing continue until the japanese surrendered everywhere?
