Been using original Kindle for some time with in built 3G as I dn't have wi-fi at home.

Was bought a Kindle Fire as a present but obviously without wi-fi it isn't much use.

Has anyone tried using the mobile wi-fi devices? (I don't mean tethering it to your phone, it is possible to purchase a mini router that creates a localised wi-fi hotspot)

I have been looking into this for my new Kindle Fire, though I have not purchased anything yet. Verizon, T Mobile and AT

You can buy a MiFi device from most major cell phone companies that converts a 3G/4G signal into a WiFi hotspot that usually up to 5 devices can connect to at the same time. I've used one from Verizon with my Kindle Fire and it works fine.
