From page 4 of the PDF version of the user manual:

"Quick Settings: Tap to display settings for commonly performed tasks, including locking and unlocking screen rotation, ..."

Quick settings is the gear icon at upper right.

Hello Myrna J. Teske,

Thank you Rubber Gloves & Tin-Foil Hat & ShirleyKat for your input to this post!

You can lock the Kindle Fire display in order to avoid auto screen rotation from changing between landscape and portrait.

From any screen, 'Tap' the quick settings (small cog) in the upper right hand corner of your display. You will see 'unlocked' setting on the top left of the menu that displays. Tap this to 'lock'.

I hope this helps!

Best Regards,

Shannon A.

I have a Kindle fire. My lock setting is off. But my web browser keeps on displaying in a landscape view which I want to change to portrait. Please advise!!

If you read the original post, you'll see that the user clearly said she had already tried setting her Kindle to "unlock", but that didn't do the trick. I'm sitting here with a Kindle Fire that's showing exactly the same symptom--in other modes it will automatically switch from portrait to landscape, but when using the web browser, it will not. And the settings have been reset to "unlock" multiple times. So the advice (basically, read the manual) was not helpful at all.

Yup. You discovered the super secret "rebooting" process. Do it once or twice a week and you'll avoid all sorts of unpredictable behavior and problems.

HT-Guy - This is the only thread I've ever seen with this problem. If I were you I'd contact customer support if you have to reboot to unlock your orientation.

Click on the big orange 'CONTACT US' button to the right.
You may have to sign in. I recommend you use the PHONE or CHAT options.
Do NOT use e-Mail.
CALL ME under the PHONE tab is great if available.
They will call you within minutes.
