Was considering getting the Fire HD for my son. However we are often beyond any type of wifi/internet signal. Will he be able to use the features and which ones? My existing kindle is one of the originals and I love that I can download several books when I have a signal for reading later at my leisure.

Paxton says:
You can read whatever books you've previously downloaded, without having wifi. Games which don't require internet access can be played. You can watch any movies that have been fully downloaded to the device prior to losing wifi access.

The Fire is really designed with WiFi in mind. If you don't have it, most of what it is designed to do is worthless. Any tablet device really, needs an active WiFi signal to use all of their features.

Any videos would have be downloaded via WiFi. You can't transfer them via USB.

I have a Fire HD and I don't have Wifi at home, but I do have it at work and also at my local library. I think most McDonalds also have wifi available. It is possible to go to any of these places, use their wifi to downlad what you want, and then use your kindle at home.

The best answer is, perhaps. Some locations like McDonalds may throttle their WiFi, so downloading a movie would take a long time at best, or not work at all. Some have limits on the time length you can use the WiFi.

A 2 hour movie in HD is going to take from 20-50 minutes to download.

For books, it would work just fine, as they are very small files.

I have a kindle hd 7" and I want to buy a book. but I want to be able to read the book even if there is no internet connection. will I be able to do this? when I downloaded the sample of the book, it went to the cloud. I want it to go directly to my kindle so I can read offline. is this possible?

Of course. Did you read any of the posts?

Denise, if you buy the book directly from the Fire, it will be sent to that Fire. Once downloaded, you do not need a connection to read.

If you are on a computer, and buy a book, you select the device you want the book to be delivered to. You just need to sync that device the next time you use it, and the book will download.

A. Dietz says:
Tap on the Books tab at the top of the home page, tap on Cloud at the top of the page, tap on the title(s) you want to download, tap on Device at the top of the page to see the books that have been downloaded to your device. (You have to be connected to WiFi to download books.)
