My library allows downloads of .pdf files but when I try to download them to a file they say they are an acsm file. I tried to move this into my Kindle but get an error message on the Kindle if I try to open it. Does anyone know if it is possible to use these files on the Kindle?

I'm not familiar with that type of file. My library has Adobe and mobi format books...but only mobi works on Kindle. You might want to look at a previous thread about library books on the Kindle: "What's up with this? No library books." Very informative thread telling you what kinds of library books you can put on your Kindle and how to do it. You have to convert the book file so that the Kindle will recognize it.

John Newton says:
Sue - In order to use the pdf ebooks from your library you'll need Adobe Digital Editions software. That software uses the .acsm file to download the PDF from your library. The .acsm file itself is not the book. These library books will work on many ereaders but not on Kindles.

John, I am able to read the file on my MacBook with Adobe Digital Reader, I was just hoping I could put it on my Kindle. It's such a shame these devices are so proprietary.

Blame the publishers not the makers of the readers.

John Newton says:
Sue - Yes it's unfortunate that consumers even have to know about formats and drm. Maybe someday in the future these things will be standarized across all electronic devices so consumers can spend their time reading instead of trying to figure out why the darn things don't work.

John Newton says:
EMazz1 - There is enough blame to go around to everyone in the ebook industry. In this specific case Amazon could add ADE capability to Kindles but that would only fix part of the wider industry problem.

A. Ammerman says:
Whether publishers may be to blame for choosing a variety of (DRMed) file formats, is one issue. The other issue is, why doesn't Amazon allow the Kindle to handle these file formats? I really don't see what they have to lose here (Amazon's not losing my ebook sales because I choose not to purchase ebooks).
