We have a new, free software update available for the Kindle Paperwhite that you can download. The software update will be delivered automatically via wireless to your Kindle Paperwhite in the coming weeks or you can download it here:

New features in this update include:
* Improved Fonts: We have made changes to Palatino, Baskerville, and Futura fonts to make them look even better on Kindle Paperwhite. You will notice this when reading books, as well as in menus. We've also improved the Japanese and Chinese fonts on your Kindle and tuned spacing to provide a better reading experience.
* Turn off Recommended Content in Home: You can now turn on or off recommended content from the Kindle Store on the Home screen.
* Smoother sample-to-book experience: When you buy the book after reading the sample, we will now automatically start the book at your last reading location in the sample and remove the sample from your Kindle.
* Easier access to Settings: When reading a book, you can now access Settings directly from the menu.
* Simplified Chinese Support: You can now use your Kindle Paperwhite in Simplified Chinese.
* Improved Manga: We've added a new Fit-to-Screen Mode that improves the readability of Manga and maximizes the use of your Kindle screen.
* Page Refresh in Comics and Manga: You can now specify a page refresh setting for comic books and manga independent of the refresh setting for books.

I am glad about being able to remove Recommended Content from the home screen (with icons instead of a list of books.) I like the look of the book icon images, but I did not like the Recommended Content. I much prefer the new update. Thanks!

@T.Gray - I totally second this, I'd love to be able to completely disable/shut off the light.

Maybe include and easier way to disable wireless mode too?

Just downloaded the update and love it. Fonts much better and I love being able to use the cover view without the recommendations for other books.

I'm running 5.2.0 on my Kindle Paperwhite, and tried to force an update this way: Home | Menu | Settings | Menu | Update Your Kindle... but Update Your Kindle is grayed out. Can I force this update by any means other than connecting to USB?

Jazzy_Jeff says:
You either have to wait for it to update automatically through WiFi or you can download the update and transfer it via your USB cable from the computer and then use the steps you tried. Only 2 options.

Update makes it much easier to turn wifi off and on while within a book.

You're right, of course. I'm just used to wireless updates now on my Apple devices, so expected it to work the same way. Once I found a cable there was no problem with the update.

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 7, 2012, 2:32:14 PM PST
It will eventually update via wireless. They just don't push it out to everyone at the exact same time.

Great update, especially the ease of buying a book that one just sampled and the ability to turn off WiFi when reading a book. Thank you!

I was reading a sample earlier today. After doing the update I downloaded the book from my library. It worked great -- deleted the sample and the book started where I left off in the sample.

Quang Tu says:
turn off light completely by pressing and holding the "-" sign at the bottom of the light bar

T. Gray says:
Quang Tu, it doesn't turn completely off by doing that. To observe this, look at your kindle in a pitch black room with kindle light setting all the way down. It will still have a glow.

I cannot figure out how to turn off recommendations from the home screen. Please help!

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 7, 2012, 7:05:58 PM PST
@Reading: After updating the Paperwhite to the 5.3.0 software version, from the Home screen, tap on the menu button at the top right, then tap on Device Options, then personalize your Kindle, and then turn off recommended Content.

@John: Thank you. It worked. I appreciate it.
