I want to purchase a Kindle Fire HD but have had a hard time making up my mind about whether to get the 32g or just the standard 16g. Any advice or suggestions from those who have already purchased? Is it worth it or necessary to have the extra memory? Thanks!

Personally I would buy the largest I could afford.

Pete and Jeff-Thank you very much, that is exactly what I needed to know. I've only had my Kindle Keyboard for a year and am not that tech savvy but what you've shared with me makes total sense. I really appreciate your response:)

Thomas, no you cannot. The Fire does not have any card slots, the memory is hard wired into the device.

You need to purchase the device with the amount of memory you require.

There is however a WiFi drive that you can purchase that works with the Fire Kingston Wi-Drive 32 GB USB 2.0 Pocket-sized Portable Storage WID/32GBZ comes in 3 sizes.

Question is one of movies IMHO. 8gb is enough with no movies. Amazon says a hd movie is 2 gb. Are you going to KEEP more than 4 or 5 movies on it at once?

I agree - always better to have more memory

Posted on Nov 17, 2012, 4:52:26 AM PST
When it comes to pre installed non-upgradeable memory I would always suggest the most memory possible. Unless you are getting it for a dedicated purpose that will not require the additional resources.

I wouldn't normally need the extra storage but on a one week cruise last year I loaded a tablet with movies (1-4Gb) to take with us.

Another consideration is if you got the wifi only ver., more storage will benefit you when you are in a no coverage area - the more storage you have, the more you can take with you.

We had a small inside cabin once and were never in the room longer than it took to sleep or shower.

Then we upgraded to suites and found a lot of reasons to stay in. Having your own deck and lounge chairs makes all the difference.

The hdmi out on the tablet can feed the room TV in most cases so it is great in hotels as well.

We don't watch movies because we are pretty busy. We see and hear about people watching movies on cruises, but those are mostly kids. Of course there are people who are "movie people" though. We have a set of kids like that.

Now, on the travel to the cruise port, there is plenty of time. Lots and lots and lots of kindle reading on cruises though.

For us the cruises are kid free honeymoons - plenty of room time ;-)

Us too...but that has never meant movies;>) Spend a lot of hours on the balcony (and decks) reading the kindle though.

Sure hope my 8.9 4g arrives before we have to leave on the 22nd for Thanksgiving and on to the cruise boat.

I received my Kindle Fire HD 32 gb yesterday! 2 day shipping was a great incentive to try Amazon Prime too. I appreciate everyone's input and it did help me decide that I would rather have the extra storage than to wish I had done it later. I Love the new Fire so far, it's my first touch screen ever so I am glad I had a stylus to use. I'll load it up with music videos and books for our trip to FL next week. We aren't taking a cruise this year but a few weeks hanging out at the beach will give us a lot ot time to read and relax:)
Happy Holidays!

Whether you buy 16, 32, 64GB's (4G), users only have access to a portion of that memory.
Certainly bigger is better but it's may not be as much as you think and could affect your media loading plans. Check the specs!

16 or 32 - books or movies.

The charger is necessary. Cover with magnetic on/off clasp is great.

Regarding the cruise comments, it depends on how far you need to travel to get to the cruise. If you live near the port then you probably don't need your Kindle; there is plenty of stuff to do on the ship, shore excursions, and you can always watch movies on demand in your stateroom for a small fee if you get bored. The 16g would be fine. But if you live far from the port, you're going to have to fly in to take the cruise and it might be nice to have some movies to watch while you're flying or at the airport waiting for your next plane, so 32g is good unless your plane has wifi.
