In the US we are gearing up for our annual Thanksgiving celebration on Thursday. I know there will be dinner disasters all over the place. We've all heard the stories of Turkey Fryers catching the house/porch/garage on fire, undone/still frozen turkeys, and all the little disasters that make for great stories...next year.

I have a gas stove, I have managed to set dishtowels on fire, melted handles of utensils too numerous to count, and forgotten to turn the oven on before the casseroles need to go in. I once left out the 1 cup of sugar to go with the 1 cup of cranberries in my Cranberry Salad, you couldn't eat it or remedy the problem!! My husband sent mashed potatoes all over the kitchen when he push the on button on the hand mixer instead of the eject button. (Always unplug mixer before pushing the eject button.)

Mom always forgets the rolls she's warming in the oven, so we don't let her warm them anymore, we prefer unburnt rolls. (I worked too hard on them to let her set them on fire.) Once she set a hot blackberry cobbler, in a glass pan, on the stove top to cool. Only problem-the burner was hot, the pan exploded sending cobbler everywhere. BTW: Blackberries on ceiling = priming and painting ceiling.

Whether you celebrate Thanksgiving or not I KNOW you have at least one cooking disaster or embarrassing moment. We all do!! With the stress of the cooking fast catching up to us, why don't we take a moment to laugh at the mishaps from the past to help get us through another year of oops, ohohs, and call the Poison Control Hotline...FAST!! Now's the time to share.

I typed my start yesterday and polished it up all nice and pretty. Then had my most recent dinner disaster.

Last night I fixed Dirty Rice for dinner. My older son had migraines that were triggered mainly by nitrates, MSG, and preservatives in foods. Because of this I learned to make my own seasoning mixes. ie, taco seasoning, Cajun seasoning, potato seasoning, and, yes, season for Dirty Rice. Homemade is really better in lots of ways, you can tailor it to the taste you like, (more/less of each spice) reduced salt, they are cheaper, and with a basic spice pantry, you always have the seasoning mix you need.

Now, back to dinner. When I tasted it to check the doneness of the rice I thought I was on fire!! It seems when reading measurements you really should be careful on what you read. When a recipe calls for 1 tsp of Cayenne Powder you should not mistake that for 1 tbls. (New rule: tablespoon abbreviation will always be capitalized in recipes. TBLS) After 1/2 cup of cream and a big ol' spoonful of sour cream, then covered in sharp cheddar cheese it was close to edible. We coughed several times while eating and I'm pretty sure my guys used their napkins on their eyes, as well as, their chins.

I was still dating my hubby at the time of this disaster. He was on his first project for the company he works for. He wanted to invite the whole project team over to his apartment for dinner, about 10+ people. He had even invited his manager and his wife. It just so happened that the manager's boss flew in that day to have a client meeting. So he also was invited. Hubby and I usually created a North Indian Feast for when he invited guests. Menu Tandoori Chicken, Sookha Aloo (spicy fried potatoes), Chaana Masaledar (chick peas in spicy tomato gravy), katchcumber raita (yoghurt w/ diced cucumbers, tomatoes, and onions), pooris (puffy deep fried flat bread), and chocolate mint mousse (because after all of that spicy, people wanted something to cool their taste buds), There were a couple of other items but I forget what.
ANYWAY, the important part of this story is the tandoori chicken. Usually we would grill it first to get that charcoal flavor and then finish it off in the oven, to make sure it was cooked. So we had done the charcoal thing and everyone had arrived and had been talking for about an hour when all of a sudden I realized. I had put the chicken in the oven, but not turned it on. So I have to jump up and turn the oven on and pray that conversation and the big boss can last an extra half hour. Luckily I pulled it off, but I still was petrified that I had screwed up his first dinner party with the bosses.

and just in case you are interested he and I learned how to cook from NOT FRE E NOW An Invitation to Indian Cooking NOT FREE NOW. It is only offered in DTB form. I think it is one of the best Indian Cook books for American Kitchens. It says open two cans of chick peas instead of soak over night.

As for Thanksgiving, I don't think my maternal grandma ever had a Thanksgiving Meal without a few burnt rolls. She did forget them over and over again.

Good morning - in appreciation of today's theme I would just like to mention that when you add melted butter to a mixing bowl do not do it while the one-and-a-half-year-old suddenly turns the paddle mixer from low to HIGH speed. I cleaned melted butter off the bench, window, windowsill, all my utensils that are in clay pots on the windowsill, the stuff that hangs from the rack over the window... Fortunately it wasn't hot!

Funny......I think I've repressed most of my memories of cooking disasters....I hardly remember what "cooking" is!! Just kidding!

In younger years after we all started getting married and before kids we had dinner parties for our friends. At dinner served by one of my girlfriends she made pork chops, the thin ones and she broiled them in her oven. They turned out as hard as a piece of cement and nobody said anything. So we're sitting there and her husband tries to cut his pork chop and it makes a loud noise as his knife hits it and goes flying off his plate! They still didn't say anything!! No jokes about it, nothing! My husband and I got into one of those laughing things where you can't look at each other, we couldn't get ourselves under control.....we'd finally stop for a minute and then we'd hear a pork chop hitting the plate again and off we'd go laughing.....

Thanks for the start, Zoo! I really have no cooking disasters to speak of, don't cook that much. The only thing I can think of is when the lower element in the oven broke while I was cooking something and starting sparking. It scared me silly. Got it replaced and haven't used the bottom oven yet.

@4Nbahu: I love pooris! My co-worker's Mom makes them, so yummy with a cup of coffee!

About eighteen years ago I was ready to cook a Butterball turkey for FIL, MIL, BIL SIL and hubby and I, so with my hubby helping, took the defrosted turkey out of the bag, was pulling the little bags of "stuff" out of the cavity and lo and behold.....a neck with the turkey's head still attached! It was staring at me and silently screaming with it's beak open. Needless to say I freaked out! Called Buterball Hotline and was assured this was still okay to cook, but to keep all wrappings, head, etc. for a representative to come to my house to pick up so they could investigate how the head got in there...should have been in two seperate packing warehouses and never should have happened. So, okay, I was VERY leery of cooking the turkey, but with company and nothing else to cook to substitute, went ahead. Meanwhile, Hubby TELLS everyone about the head and everybody is grossed out. Turkey is done (Smells really good) and everybody sits down to eat..loads their plates up with sides, rolls, etc. but no turkey. Finally hubby takes a piece of turkey, takes a bite with everyone watching like a hawk and says....Yum, takes just like beak!!! So long story short...no one ate any turkey! Worst Thanksgiving Ever!!

My most memerable kitchen mishap happened when I was in 7th ot 8th grade....Even at that age I did most of the cooking because of the long hours mom was at work(wonder where I got it from?) Anyway...there had been a good sale on ham and since everybody likes ham we got one...
When it got time to cook it I told mom that I didn't know how to cook a ham...she said do it just like you would a roast.....You guessed it,
Salt, Pepper, onions,,,,,,While we were eating dad says this ham is really salty make sure you don't but this brand anymore....Of course I said that I was sorry that I must have used to much salt.....then I was asked why I salted the ham....Mom said to make it like a roast, I put salt on a roast..
All these years later we still laugh about it....

Thanks Zoo Keeper for opening from a very hot 89 degrees JHB my worst disaster in a kitchen was when we were children 3 sisters wanting to cook a tin of condense milk fast we put it in the pressure cooker well my older sister put it in the pressure cooker me and my younger sister watched I can't remember how long it was after but we just heard a explosion the whole kitchen was just caramel on the sealing floors everywhere with a big hole in the ceiling she must have put to little water in but what a mess my parents was so cross with us and it took ages to clean up sticky everywhere now we laugh about it that day it was a disaster.

The worst cooking disaster I can remember occurred when I was a child. My dad decided to make root beer at home. The neighbor helping us called out 2 tablespoons of yeast, which she had just added. My dad thinking she wanted him to add it also added more yeast. Three weeks later, there's was a small pop where the bottles were stored. Then another.and then several more. The smell was of yeasty root beer. Just a my dad walked into the storage area, every bottled popped it's cap and he was covered in root beer. It took forever to clean up. WE never tried it again.

Kitty Update:
Kitty Straw (along with Son and you) wore me down. His new official designation has changed from outdoor kitty to indoor/outdoor kitty. Which means he can come in and out as he pleases.

Right now he prefers to spend the night inside, go out in the mornings for play and sunshine, come in have a nap, back out until dark. He has watched the inside cat, who goes out on the upper deck to sun herself, to figure out how to let me know when he wants in. She scratches on the storm door, so now he does too. His favorite place seems to be draped around the back of my neck, I now have a kitty stole to wear while reading.

Ah that brings back another one my Dad made ginger beer and they tightened the caps well on the 24 December they decided to pop I got one just under my eye still got a small scar today the doctor told my dad I was lucky that it was not higher I could have lost my eye had 4 stitches to me the condense milk one was the worst as we had to do all that cleaning with this one I was spoilt rotten.
PS is root beer the same as ginger beer.

I'm going to be gone for a while. Mom got up with a stomach bug Sunday. Yesterday she was weak and shaky and still couldn't keep much down. I called this morning to check on her and tell her I was coming to get the fixin's for the pies she wanted to make. She's still very sick. I'm going over to get phone numbers and cancelling guest for Thanksgiving.

My California aunt's grandson was coming from KY, as well as Mom's sis and her husband. Don't mind cancelling on her sis. Uncle has Parkinson's and doesn't need exposed to a bug. Hate to call cousin this late in the week, but no help for it. Mom doesn't need overnight guest tomorrow night. (I would offer here, but she would feel obligated to visit with them.)

I'll gather the turkey and stuff she has and fix things here for Thurs. But, now the big challenge--trying to get Mom to see a doctor today!! When I mentioned it she said she'd wait until tomorrow. I think three days is long enough for someone in their 70's to be this sick. Keep your fingers crossed.
