How do you change a language to understand English instructions?

Richard, sorry I do not know the answer to your question, hopefully someone will soon. I just wanted to say, please ignore Fud53. We all just ignore him/her. He/She never has anything helpful to say.

ROR: Google

kindle users guide

Therein, refer to "Language and Dictionaries."

CBRetriever says:
You don't need to do the words, just count and this works for all languages

From the Home Screen
Menu
5th Listing (Settings)
4th Listing (Device Options)
5th Listing (Language and Dictionaries)
1st Listing (Language)

English or whatever you want
Ok
Ok/Accept

The Paperwhite will reboot

and to those who suggest reading the user guide - it's not much help because it doesn't say what the options are in other languages, just in english

Thank you so much! Exactly as you say, the options in any other language are of no help if you don't understand the language and the user guide is short of screen shots. I was interrupted in the set up process and ended up with Japanese! Was about to set off back to Waterstones to use there in store demo model to find out which number option to use. Just saved me a trip and and afternoon. Much appreciated.
Roy.

Mine arrived in Japanese also! Very frustrating. I tried counting the menu options as instructed in these posts, but it does not work. The menu must be different in Japanese? Help

CBRetriever says:
that's because it was written before the Special options hit the menus

here's the latest:

if you have the Paperwhite with special offers, it's slightly different:

1. Tap the Home icon (House Icon)
2. Tap the Menu icon (Three Bars in Upper right)
3. Tap the 2nd-to-last item on the menu (6th from the top if you have the offers, 5th from the top if you don't)
4. Tap the 4th item
5. Tap the last (5th) item
6. Tap the 1st item

note that step 3 is different

@L. Powers - The Menu icon is the 3 lines in the top-right corner of the screen.

Thanks CBRetriever and Pineapple. Your instructions were very helpful after the Kindle started up in an Asian language.

My drop down which is in Chinese, I think, has 6 lines. Lines 3 and 4 and greyed out. If I pick the 5th I get another menu with 5 options, so I pick number 4. Then I get another menu with only three options. Any idea what I do now?

Posted on Jan 1, 2013, 2:17:40 AM PST
CBRetriever says:
5. Tap the last item
6. Tap the 1st item

Thank you! I accidentally pressed the wrong language option when I received my Kindle today...this saved me a lot of frustration!

Help! I got stuck in Chinese, then I hit the Wifi button by mistake. I don't know what the homescreen looks like or where is it? I keep trying to tap a Chinese figure in upper left corner but nothing happens.

This happened to me as well - page was frozen and in chinese. I called customer support and they had me cycle power by holding down the power button for 30 seconds. Then it reloaded and the home page came up - you should be able to follow the rest of the instructions listed above. Good Luck!
