Odds are good that there aren't a whole LOT of guys named Alistair in the continental U.S. ... so I'm gonna guess U.K.

Price is $11.69 for me in SA.

Hi Pat, I'm in South Africa.
I don't understand why there is a differential price of that magnitude. Of any magnitude actually.

Alistair says:
If you logged out and went to view the book it would be $9.99

Jazzy_Jeff says:
Those are US prices. When you log in it changes to the prices for your country.

The agreements between the publisher and the seller are different for Every Single Country, Alistair. The price for a customer in France, for example, will be different yet again from yours or mine.

That's just the way the cookie crumbles.

This is correct; the way to avoid confusion is to sign in BEFORE shopping.

And to realize those emails ALWAYS contain the US price which may very likely be different in other countries.

Vanished says:
Jazzy_Jeff is correct. The Amazon home screen shows US prices, when you click on a book to view details and price then you see whether or not it is available in the first place, and you then see the price that is charged for your region. It is usually $2 more.

Vanished says:
I have found that a few titles have been a few dollars less than prices mentioned by US customers. Not many, but they are there.

CBRetriever in France says that sometimes prices are less for her than US customers.

I feel scammed. Its an electronic book - no shipping involved. What possible reason could they have for a $2 surcharge? VAT is only 14% and I believe they already include the 15% sales tax for Lichtenstein anyway (being HQ for Amazon finance). Thanks for the great response folks. Its appreciated! :)

Jazzy_Jeff says:
Personally I don't feel scammed about anything I buy. If I don't like the price I don't buy it. If I think the price is worth it then I do.

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 14, 2012, 6:15:37 AM PST
Just Peachy says:
Sorry, it's not VAT.

It's is the price. It is what it is. That particular book, the price is set by the publisher (Penguin), not Amazon.
Do you feel scammed when the price in SA is less than the US price?

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 14, 2012, 6:16:04 AM PST
All of this information was available before you got a Kindle. If you feel scammed, it's because you didn't do any research before, not because of the results of your research now.

T. Cook says:
Here in Canada the same thing happens, sometimes the price is lower, sometimes higher, it just depends on what the publisher wants to charge in any given country.
Nothing to do with any surcharge, Tax or anything else, just different pricing for a different market...

Vanished says:
Alistair, the book would cost you $13.60 on Kalahari.

OK, that is for a paper book, but consider the convenience of having the book on a lightweight device, or on multiple devices.

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 14, 2012, 6:19:44 AM PST
Alistair, it's all about publishers, copyright issues and distribution rights. Each publisher negotiates the distribution rights to a certain area of the world. They are the ONLY ones that can control (as in set prices, etc) for that eBook. Since this is a geographical thing, the price changes based on the location you are in. There is nothing Amazon can do about it and they have no say in the matter.

Regular books are based on the location that you buy from which is why sometimes it is cheaper to buy from the Amazon.com (US) and pay shipping to other areas of the world. EBooks, on the other hand, is based on your location as determined by your IP address, credit card used and credit card billing address.

Alistair says:
Pat I'd always want to understand why thats the case. Price differentials in a digital world make no sense to me when there is no shipping involved, no courier, no handling fee, etc.

(and the only things cheaper in SA than the US is probably ..er.. nothing?)

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 14, 2012, 6:20:37 AM PST
AGAIN: ~*Each country*~ has a different deal/arrangement with the publisher. It's NOT AMAZON you need to take issue with. It's whomever negotiates these arrangements in your government.
