Really stupid question about Fire HD

mdholm says:
Which end is the top? I have one of the Moko cases, and when I put my Fire in it with the camera on the right side, there is an opening for the cord to connect on the left when the case is closed. However, lately when I've been holding the Fire in document orientation and I open a new app, it loads upside down. So, I'm wondering, which way does this thing go? I feel like an idiot for even having to ask; I thought it was obvious but I guess not.

metz1295 says:
depending on the orientation, the power and volume button are on the top or to the right.

mdholm says:
Thanks. That means the case I have doesn't make any sense. When its closed, if the device is in the other way, then the charging ports are blocked. Weird.

do you have a link for the case you purchased?

It could be the apps.

Some apps do not orient correctly.

Which apps are causing this behavior?

So, are you saying the camera SHOULD be on the right? It made sense to me that the buttons were on that bottom because that's where they are on the first gen.

Looks like I'm not the only one confused.

In my case (Marware micro shell), held in portrait layout, the camera is to the left and the buttons on on the upper left. This case does not have cutouts from the charging port though. Mine does have a little tiny opening on the left, and I think that's for the camera. Here's the case:

I just spoke to "Damian" at Amazon/Kindle support. He confirmed that the camera goes on the top when in landscape mode, but would not say which way the camera should go in portrait mode. He kept saying, "why does it matter, since the Fire will orient itself however you need it to?" I guess technically he's right, but the anal part of me wants it to be right!!

T. Cannon says:
I only have the 1st Generation Fire but I found that no matter how it is oriented when i turn it on the first screen (with the arrow that I have to swipe to get into all the stuff) is always the same. I fugure then that this is the "true" orientation. If the Fire HDs do not have a similar screen then this won't help you.:-)

Lisa says:
In landscape mode. the camera is on top. In portrait mode, it really depends on your case, I guess Mine has the camera on the right but thats just so the on off mechanism works.

mdholm says:
I just tried that; depending on which way I hold it, the screen will orient itself so that I have to slide from the right. So, that doesn't help. I thought you were on to something!

Okay, well I just looked at the picture of the Fire HD on the product page and it shows the little circle (I fiugre this must be the camera) on the left. Is that official enough? :-)

Jay says:
It would seem a stupid question. There is no 'right', or 'wrong', orientation. The ads show photos with the camera on the right, and with the camera on the left, in portrait mode, and the image being properly oriented. That would suggest that you can choose either orientation, and set it as you please. From there, it depends only upon the case you put it in. If you can't figure out how to set the orientation you want, ask Kindle Customer Service. Or, you could shop for a case which has cut outs for ports, and buttons, on the other side from the one you now have, or on both sides.

mdholm says:
Excuse me for asking. Every other tablet I've ever had has had a top and a bottom, I guess its crazy for me to assume that the Fire would be the same. I DID call Kindle CS, as I stated above. The rep would NOT say which end of the device was the top in portrait mode. So, apparently some app designers orient their apps one direction, and others set them up the other way. For instance, Spotify opens up with the camera on the left. Pinterest opens with the camera on the right. Just seems goofy to me.

There you have it...Amazon wouldn't tell the app developers which way was up, either.

Ellen Ripley says:
I bought the same case as you. If you insert your Fire so that the charging ports are accessible when closed that is the correct way to insert it into that case. Unfortunately to be able to use the hand strap on that case you must rotate it 180 degrees in order to read or play apps. In order words, you open it as you would a book and then must flip it 180 degrees in order to read it as a book for that case's design. The Fire itself, if left unlocked, will flip the screen to whatever orientation it is in, but the case design on that Moko almost makes you feel and look like an idiot when using it. The problem with some of these cases is that if you take it as a given that your on/of and volume controls will always be on the right side or the top of the Fire, the cases confuse the issue by switching those positionings.
I returned that case because opening and closing the cover did not always put the Fire to sleep or wake it.

I'll probably return mine, too. I ordered one of the Amazon cases, since it seems to be the only one that holds the device the correct way. I'm thinking it is correct, because the external parts of the case seem to line up with the Fire itself. We'll see. I am bummed its not available in green, though.

I ordered the Amazon Fire cover; it arrived today. I like the way it fits much better than the Moko cover. I think this one is going to work out much better for me.

Are you right or left handed?
