I am not a technical person. Could someone please explain to me what a kindle is and why I just got one as a girt? I can't even turn it on and no instructions came with it.

What kind did you get? Is it a Kindle Fire or an eReader kindle?

Hi Kathy,

Do you read a lot? If so, that's why you got it as a gift. It's a wonderful machine designed to make reading more pleasurable. The advantages over a paper book is that it is lighter and easier to hold, you can look up unfamiliar words with the built-in dictionary, you can make the print as large as you want it to be - and so much more!

What does your Kindle look like? Does it have an alphabetical keyboard? Is it the version that lights up, the one called the Paperwhite? If you write back and let us know what's you've got, we'll tell you how to turn it on. Once it is on, you'll find that the User Guide is already on it. Then you can read all about the features.

I've had one (different versions) for four years now, and I couldn't live without it.

There's a switch on the bottom. Instructions are on the device. Works somewhat better if first you plug the little end of the cord into the device and the big end into an outlet.

Except she probably didn't get the outlet adapter if this is her first kindle. So she'd have to plug the large end into the USB port on her computer or use another charger.

Dog Lover says:
Every one of my Kindles arrived with a card included saying what to do first (turn it on - had a picture and everything showing how to do that.) Once the device was turned on, it walked me through each step to get it going. Right there on the device screen. (These were all eInk devices.)

For Fire devices there are videos on the help pages online -

Just click on the picture of the device that matches yours. The "getting started" stuff will be on the page that displays.

I don't know why someone gave you one but I hope you said "thank you" to him/her.

You can also access the user guides and the "getting started" info online. I personally like to have the manual separate to the new device I'm learning about, so I can keep instructions in front of me while I follow them. Go here:
for the "getting started" info, and here:
for full user guides, and you can download whichever one is right for your device.

The gifter didn't SAY what it was, or why they gifted it to you? How odd.

Kathy, Kindle is amazing device that can hold thousand of books in the package smaller than a paperback, and allows many advanced functions such as annotating the book, looking up and translating words and phrases etc.

For overview, see here:

Next, search for your model in Amazon store to see the product page with its marketing blurb.

Finally, go to , click on your model and read help pages.

When in doubt, or get stuck, post here or, even better, on dedicated tech support forum:
