Link to PART 1

March 20th
In the bow of a ship which had been crafted by Elvin magic to resemble a snow goose, Picea lifted her scepter over the frigid waters of the Arctic Sea.
Contrary to myth, Santa's workshop was not at the North Pole. In fact he had no workshop at all. The toys and presents he gave were made from elemental magic which he gathered at the North Pole. Not the geographic North Pole everyone points to, but magnetic north which changes its position daily. It is there that the barrier was closed between this and the nether world where the troll queen still plots to enslave both humans and elves. If not for the barrier, the queen would have burned every last tree and covered the earth in oceans of stone.
Picea was desperate. She needed magic if she were to find her perfect mate. Above her, pink and lavender light known as the Aurora Borealis swirled in a quickening vortex over her scepter. In its center a sad face appeared. He was a clean shaven man in his early forties with dark brown hair. His pale blue eyes held no joy at all. Picea found it hard to believe such a man could take her father's place, but she had no other choice. Christmas would be here all too soon and she would have to find the man who fit that face. If sunlight bathed the glade of truth on Christmas morn without a new tree, the barrier would fail. Picea needed a mate. No, she needed the perfect mate, for together they would become the spirit of Christmas. She, the tree, which was decorated each year, and he the jolly old elf, loved by the children all over the world. Through those two icons the love of the world could be channeled into the barrier which holds back the evil that threatens all living things.
But how could she warm a heart cold with grief when her own heart shivered at the loss of her parents?

Jazzy gazed at the fractal image of her nemesis in the ice-stone.
"Finally, a mistake. Rocko, Harley, come to me. I have a job for you."
Two misshapen forms detached from the stone and lumbered forward. "Yes my queen."
"You're going into the world of men. Find out what you can about Jake Harding and report back to me."
Jazzy waited until Picea lowered her scepter and turned away. She fired both catapults, sending her stone minions through the closing vortex. They sank into the icy waters unnoticed by the elf. Once settled on the ocean floor, the two stones changed form. Rocko became a chiseled body builder, and Harley a golden haired goddess of beauty.

October 20th
Jake loaded his tools into the cargo hold of the helicopter. He had a rush job for a half-circle gazebo outside a home in Washington's beautiful Baker Mountain Forest.
The pilot lifted off, leaving Jake's truck in a heliport near Bedford. The woman had claimed no one else in the state would take a job that kept them isolated from the world throughout the holidays. Jake would have to eat, sleep, and work on the job. His materials would be flown in from Seattle, but none of that bothered him.
It was good to have work and better that it would keep him busy and away from the house. A house he'd built himself, starting it on the day his wife gave him the most wonderful news he'd ever heard. She was pregnant. It had taken him eight months to complete the house and it wasn't a moment too soon. His beautiful baby girl had been born a month premature. She made that house a home, marking the walls with circles and lines which Jake refused to paint over. She had added life, laughter, and tears.
It was just a house, now.
The lump returned to Jake's throat as he watched the forest glide beneath him. He pulled out his plans and studied the surrounding landscape. The ground sloped downward from the house to the forest. He'd have to elevate the eastern edge with pillars to keep it level. The front side would curve around the base of the blue spruce to be planted by him on Christmas morning. It didn't make sense to Jake, but who was he to argue with a customer?

Yesterday's link

Birthday and Anniversary link.

In honor of the coming holiday I've included a couple of my Thanksgiving favorites. Since we have people from all over the world I'll ask this instead of just Thanksgiving.

What are your favorite dishes for feasts?

Turkey dressing

½ loaf sour dough French bread cut into cubes and dried for 3-4 days
½ loaf sweet French bread cut into cubes and dried for 3-4 days
(you can substitute 1 bag of croutons if you're short on time)
6-8 cups of your favorite cornbread recipe...this also comes dried and boxed
1 large celery stock
2 Large onions
6 large carrots shredded
1 stick of butter
1 12oz can broth
3 cups broth and drippings from the turkey....enough liquid to give the bread the consistency of mashed can substitute with all canned broth
2 tsp Poultry seasoning or to taste if using seasoned croutons
2 tsp garlic salt to taste if using seasoned croutons
6 eggs slightly beaten

Crumble cornbread and bread cubes into large roasting pan or other deep dish pan
Sauté vegetables in butter until tender and pour over breads...add broth and stir together consistency should be like mashed potatoes...add seasonings to taste when it's right stir in the eggs and bake at 300 for 20 to 30 minutes

Grandma's Sweet Potatoes

3 cups Sweet potatoes baked until soft and mashed
1 cup sugar
¼ cup melted butter
2 eggs
½ cup milk
1tbsp vanilla
½ tsp salt

Add all the above ingredients to a large bowl and mix well. Pour into a 9 X 13 greased pan and bake for 30 min at 350 deg, F

4Nbahu says:
As always Leo, thank you for the great start. The story is quite intriguing.

The dressing sounds yummy.

Here in India there is a root vegetable called Shakarkundhi, which I believe is a sweet potato. In the winter you can find men roasting them over cow dung fires, sometimes coal fires. When they are cooked they are peeled, cut and cubed, sprinkled with Chat Masala* and finished off with some lemon. There used to be an old man who would go around our colony (neighborhood) pushing a cart, that had the stove and all the accompaniments, and everyday ring our doorbell at 3 pm. My FIL would go out and purchase two plates, one for him and one for me. It was a wonderful bonding.

*Chaat masala Urdu چاٹ مصالہ, Hindi चाट मसाला; also spelled chat masala) is a masala, or spice mix, used in Pakistani and Indian Cuisine. It typically consists of amchoor (dried mango powder), cumin, kala namak (black salt), coriander, dried ginger, salt, black pepper, asafoetida (hing) and chili powder.

A Family For Christmas

bethcross says:
Hi everyone - thanks for the birthday wishes! They are greatly appreciated.

Guess I will let everyone know what is going on around here. After my husband left June 1, I tried everything I could to put it back together, to no avail.
He has recorded his album, which came out last week and is available on iTunes. At 55, I guess he will become a rockstar! Sadly, his personal relations are not as well presented as his musical talents. Over a month ago he said he "just wants out" and I have had limited text communications since. The worst part is, he has not talked to, called, texted or asked about his 17-year-old son in over a month!! He has talked to his daughter, but only because she initiates the relationship, I think. The whole thing is just so very, very sad. A year ago, my husband was 150% involved in our son's life - now nothing. The pain my poor kid must be going through breaks my heart. He is a senior this year, has just broken up with his girlfriend of almost 2 years, has hit a couple other bumps in the road, but his still trying to do the very best he can, grade-wise.

Because of all this, I threw caution to the wind 2 weeks ago and filed for divorce on the advice of several friends, family members and my therapist. The future is extremely uncertain and I am terrified as I only work part-time with no chance of full-time with Walmart. I have no idea what the fallout from all this will be, but I am imagining it will not be good, with possible bankruptcy. I only know I can't stay married to a man who is a total stranger and is not acting responsibly, either to his family or financial commitments.

I appreciate all your kind thoughts and prayers. This is the second saddest birthday I've ever had, but I am trying, trying, trying to hold my head up and move forward positively. Not easy, but I know others have it far worse than I do, and so I am trying to be grateful for all the things I have and not what I am losing.

I will be back later to post my book choices. Everyone have a great day! Beth

Sound like the "man " is going thru serious mentalpause. I know from personal experience that there is light and joy at the very long end of the tunnel. If he isn't already, you may want to get some professional counseling to help your son to adjust to the new norm (some school systems may have this resource available) . Make a new birthday rituals for yourself. Blessings and grace are headed your way . Have the best birthday that you can.

Got time for a few kinlib picks:

Desert Soliloquy- Mystery
Caroline Laughery agrees to meet her ex-husband, Charles, at Odessa, a silver mining town in the high desert of California. He never arrives. Charles Laughery, a wealthy, powerful member of an international cartel awakes to find himself trapped, in total darkness, inside an abandoned mine. He keeps himself sane by enumerating those who might be responsible for his abduction. The mystery begins to unfold when Caroline receives help to search for Charles from Josh Logan, a private detective. She soon finds herself romantically torn between the two men. A young couple, Kate Wilson and Mike Connelly, join in the search, and their traumatic pasts are woven into the plot. Tension increases with every page as the investigation takes the story to Los Angeles, San Francisco and Durango, Colorado, culminating at the Anasazi Indian cliff dwellings in Mesa Verde. Libby Grandy's novel, Desert Soliloquy, offers readers romance, intrigue, self-discovery and suspense.

More Than You Know- Literary Fiction
This debut novel opens with a 9-year-old boy carefully bearing a tiny infant through a furious thunderstorm. Sworn to hide the baby's origins, he delivers the nameless child safely to the doorstep of an unaware family. Decades later, the boy, L.J. Tillman, has matured into a brilliant young jazz saxophonist and is happily married to Olivia, a promising singer who works as a beautician. When the secret L.J. has kept so faithfully is finally revealed, it tears apart his relationship with Olivia and starts a downward spiral that ends with him homeless and playing for pocket change on the streets of New York. For her part, the tormented Olivia, abandoned by L.J., sinks into depression.
More Than You Know is the elegantly crafted story of how this shattered couple rescues their marriage: shaken to the core, they discover that truth conforms to its own rules and that love can endure even the most profound injuries.

The Thief (RC Investigations)- Suspense
Allie Williams is on the run with incriminating evidence proving her company's new wonder-drug is lethal. In a last ditch effort to save lives, she races to the safety of her hometown, hiding in plain sight among the close knit community where she'll definitely be innocent until proven guilty.
Ross Carpenter has a reputation for resolving situations people prefer to keep off the police record. When a new client accuses his former high school sweetheart of theft and worse, he's compelled to take the case. Even if it means returning to the hometown he left behind and the woman who stole his heart.

Ho-Ho-Homicide - A Bubba the Monster Hunter Short Story- Yellow Banner (previously gotten book) for me on March 20, 2012. (I have lots from this series, not I need to find time to read some)

The Hermitage House Miracle- Fantasy
As Jamie lay alone in bed, not knowing his mother had just been killed while driving drunk, he was filled with disturbing thoughts. The last words his mother had said to him before going out were, "I've given you the last six years of my life, and for what? To always be running from one town to another? Never having a life of my own just so you could live?" And then in a drunken slur, she had added, "If I had a lick of sense I'd have let old Ernie do what he wanted!"
Why had his mother said she had given him the last six years of her life when he was twelve years old? Why did she always seem to resent him? Who was Ernie? And why couldn't he remember anything about his life before his first day of school in the first grade?
The only thought that comforted him was the newspaper story dated only a few days earlier on May 24, 1992. The article reported that a new wave of computer games would soon replace the old pinball machines and "boggle the mind" with realistic video techniques that could only be dreamed about a few years earlier. The story had aroused a curious excitement in him, and he didn't know why.
After being sent to live at the Hermitage House for Children, Jamie begins to have a series of strange and troubling dreams. Each dream is about a little blond-haired boy who has a little sister and a mother and a father. But the mother is not his mother who was killed in the car accident and he had never known his father. Yet his dreams are always about the same family, especially the little boy and his dog. And the father programs computers and makes games, even promising to build the boy a video game so lifelike the boy will think he's actually inside it.
Sometimes, Dreams Turn into Reality...

That's my picks to book #62. Out of time for now, but be back later...
