Ok, so all the really excited people who were willing to pay extra to get their Fires quickly have them already, and the shipping discussions have cooled down.

But now it's time for us cheapos who opted for free shipping!

Mine shipped yesterday, it said USPS, and it wasn't picked up till yesterday afternoon according to the tracking. It's coming from KY which should only take a couple days by the usual Amazon methods... Amazon quoted Friday delivery but based on recent orders I was hoping it would actually make it Thursday.

So this morning I track it again and see that it was actually shipped fedex smartpost - which means an extra stop at the fedex smartpost depot, and an extra day in transit. Sigh! Fedex tracking is now estimating MONDAY delivery though Amazon still says Friday, which I now hope is accurate since I am off work this Friday and would have time to play. It says it's in PA this morning, a couple hours from me, which COULD mean it makes it to my local post office overnight and out for delivery tomorrow... which would be fine with me :-)

Mine left Hebron KY on the 14th, went right past me, and is now in Fedex Smartpost Leetsdale PA US, east of me. It is coming via USPS, also slated for delivery on Friday. My experience is that I might have it tomorrow.

So, our Fires are on the same truck perhaps? Transit buddies?

Not sure what your post office is like but, in the past when Fed Ex has dropped off a package at MY post office, it takes an additional 2 days to get to me. When I track it, it shows it's at my post office and the delivery is approx. 2 days later. It just lays there...I hate Fed Ex smart Post.

Fortunately my post office is pretty good. If I see something there early in the morning it usually is out for delivery that day. I wonder if I can stop and pick it up if I see it's there but not out for delivery. My wife did that one time with an express mail package (she called first though because she knew nobody would be home to sign for it).

Mine left Hebron, KY early yesterday and no updates since. I am so sorry I opted for standard shipping! I went to Best Buy last night to get a cover and was able to play with one. They had the Fires in stock and I so wanted to buy one!

What type of cover did you find at best buy. I'm looking for a nice on for kindle touch.

When did Amazon start using FedEx Smartpost? I agree it's horrible - I have no problem with USPS *OR* FedEx but the combination is the worst of both worlds. Woot uses it and it's almost enough to put me off ordering from them.

It is most likely those of us who picked free shipping who are left to deal with Smartpost. My local PO is pretty good...once an item hits there, I typically get it that day.

There hasn't been an update since 7:48 this morning when my Fire arrived in Leetsdale PA.

Mine was shipped FedEx Smartpost, but they never gave it to the post office. My Fire came today via a FedEx truck. I used free super saver shipping, so I'm pretty pleased to have it the day after the original release date. It's like getting 1-day shipping for free. :)

KatieeB - I got theVerso Artist Series Cover for Kindle Fire, Cities, Red. As soon as I touched it I knew it was the one for me. It has a very soft feel to it and the Fire fits snugly. I am very picky about my covers and wanted to see and touch before I bought or I would have gotten it from Amazon. *sigh* Now I just need my Fire to go with my cover!

BTW, I was told that covers that fit the Blackberry Playbook and the 7" Galaxy Tab will also fit the Fire. I don't know if that is true or not because I found the perfect cover so quickly that I didn't try any others. Best Buy has a fairly nice selection and in the store I was at, (Willowbrook - Houston) the Fire's were in the same sections as their other tablets.

I had the same experience (with Smart Post or whatever it's called) when I got my K3. It arrived in PA (where I was at the time) via FedEx within a day of leaving the warehouse, and was approximately 50 miles from where I was. It took 3 (THREE) more days to get to me because the Postal Service routed it all over creation before sending it to the closest post office. It was even up in New York State at one point. Very frustrating. But I did, after all, choose the free shipping! Other times I've chosen free shipping from Amazon, though, it's taken much less time than this did, and I have no clue why that should be.

I paid for standard shipping ($6.98) and still ended up with SmartPost. Never again! If I have to deal with FedEX SmartPost, I'll go with the Free Shipping. Or else I will pay for Prime and figure it is well worth it to avoid all the frustrations.

Agreed: SmartPost is actually pretty stupid.

I am in the process of returning a Kindle keyboard I purchased on Nov. 5th and have ordered the Kindle touch. I've been on a merry go round as they wanted me to return it via USPS...I told them it was to go back by UPS as that's how I got it.They said they set up UPS to pick it up but I've heard nothing more.
Plus, I was talking to a female that I could not understand, asked to talk to someone else 3 times and she kept saying "I'll speak slower"...I ended up hanging up on her. I then went into chat and could not get it through to them so here I sit wondering how to ship this back.

FireRose - this is exactly why I didn't choose standard shipping. Super Saver has of late been real quick for me, so why pay for the same service I can get for free?

Of course I could have signed up for the free month of Prime and gotten the free 2-day shipping on it, but I didn't because I wanted to save that free month for about now when I'd be doing a lot of Christmas shopping.

I wouldn't say SmartPost is stupid - it's just a super-economy service and you get what you pay for. Fedex saves money by not having to do the 'last mile' delivery and they maybe can use some of their extra capacity for these since they're lower priority. The post office doesn't have to have the big semis loading up at the Amazon warehouse. It's a win-win for the carriers. It's just slow -- by design.

I should have my Fire today, but since it came early Fedex holding back until tommorow. I hate smartpost. I thought smartpost was only for free shipping. I paid for 3 to 5 day shipping.

The Postal Service's routing was very stupid. Nothing should take three days to go fifty miles. I'm sure they use some kind of computer program to figure out which intermediate destinations to send it to, but program or no program, it's got to be very inefficient. So yes, it's stupid. FedEx gets it from KY to PA in a day, and then it takes three days to go the final miles w/in PA -- and goes north to NYS in the meantime -- yep, still stupid.

On the Woot website (which frequently utilizes, um, SmartPost) it is commonly referred to as DumbPost. I have to agree.

My order date is Sep 30th; paid for shipping, shipped from KY on Mon, Nov 14th and expected delivery is Friday. I don't recall it ever taking this long to get an order, especially when I paid for shipping. Something seems broken here. Too many others have received their Kindle Fire.

I paid for shipping as well and am really frustrated. I live in Houston and my Fire is at the FedEX distribution center in Houston and has been since noon today. Amazon is saying delivery is tomorrow but FedEx is saying delivery is scheduled for Saturday. What is FedEx going to do with my package until Saturday? It would have been much better if Amazon had used USPS all the way. Priority mail would already be delivered.
