Is there any way to tell if your Kindle has special offers without registering it first ? Am debating buying one from someone who received it as a gift but would rather not have the special offers. They don't know which one they have.

Thanks

Yes! Turn it on and look at the bottom of the Home page for a small ad. Even more obvious in Sleep mode it will display ads and not the regular screen savers.

I have the K3SO and I'm not sure Pete is correct. From everything I've read, until the Kindle has been registered AND synced via WiFi, the ads won't necessarily show up. However, the owner should be able to call Kindle Customer Service with her serial number (Menu/Settings) and find out whether it's the KSO or not.

Also, if it's the new mini-Kindle, even if it has the ads you can pay $30 to have them removed. That option hasn't been provided for the K3 (yet).

If they are including the box, it should indicate that it is the version with special offers.

I bought a K3 and a K3SO from Amazon and the only box was the shipping carton, which didn't indicate one way or the other. :(

Even if it had the ads and the price was right I wouldn't be that concerned with the ads.

It takes nothing away from the reading aspect of the reader. Only a small ad at the bottom of the Home page, a Screen saver ad and nothing in the pages of the book you are reading.

BTW: What model and price have you been offered?

Do you mean the cardboard box that basically just Holds the Kindle in the molded insert? Mine does show that it contained a Kindle with Special Offers (just below the hinged part of the box, in the black area, next to the Certified Frustration Free stamp and the Assembled in China sticker).

It's a Kindle 3 and they are asking $125.

The box does NOT indicate it has Special Offers when checking the area mentioned by Blaiz. And when following Pete's initial suggestion, there are no indications of special offers.

Thanks for all the replies.

Okay offer $100 for it and it won't matter if it is a SO model or not!

Remember as MamaSylvia said it may not show until it is registered.

Good luck with your wheeling and dealing!

Blaiz is correct. Mine is in the same place he described, so perhaps you don't have KSO. You are looking on the outside of the box, right?

kurebeachkid says:
Yes, looking at outside of box. Has UPC code and other two items mentioned.

Is a good deal either way. Thanks

You can buy a Kindle Keyboard (K3 - Wi-Fi only) with Special Offers for $99 from Amazon.

Interesting. I just looked at the book my K3SO came in, looked at all the sides, and it did not have any indication about the special offers. (And yes, I'm sure it's the box the KSO came in.)

I have no explanation, it's just strange but it does mean AFAIK that the OP can't count on the SOs showing up on the box.

My KSO box has a brown sticker that has 3 oblongs running up the side that say wifi, usb and drk then sitting on the bar code the person reading a book leaning against the tree. In front of the boy and tree it says Special Offers. My non SO box is identical but does not say special offers. The tag is white but since we bought it 10months earlier I do not know if that is significant.

to the op:

Even if you get the Kindle with Special Offers, I think you may actually enjoy them. The good thing is that they change every couple of days, so you are never stuck with any one for a long period of time. You might actually like to take advantage of a few of the offers. The ads are no problem at all. I am glad I did switch to a Kindle with 3G and Special Offers.

My box is really plain and doesn't have ANY of those, just the shipping label and packing slip container, and on one short end the Assembled in China and "frustration-free packaging" labels. Nothing else.

Beth says:
This was next to the "frustration-free packaging" label on the opposite side from the assembled in china.

MamaSylvia says:
There was a label there on my box, but it was completely covered by the shipping label and although I tried to peel it off gently and then tried to look at it through the shipping label, it was completely unreadable. So whatever it said I will never know.

I bought a WiFi Kindle Touch ($99) from Amazon with special offers. I have registered it and also synced it several times and I have yet to see a special offer anywhere. Also, in the menus I do not see anything about special offers. Another odd thing is that when I look at Device Info it says my Kindle is a WIFI + 3G model, although the 3G doesn't seem to work. Anyone else had a similar experience? My Kindle works great and I'm happy I don't get special offers. There is nothing on the box to indicate the model.

It is simply a Kindle touch and double check below here with the serial numbers for different models.

B001 = Kindle 1

B002 = Kindle 2 U.S. (Sprint)

B003 = Kindle 2 International (AT&T)

B004 = Kindle DX U.S.

B005 = Kindle DX International

B006 = Kindle 3 3G + WiFi Graphite/White (U.S. and Canada) NOTE: Some European cities may receive this serial number as well.

B008 = Kindle 3 WiFi

B009 = Kindle DX Graphite

B00A = Kindle 3 3G + WiFi Graphite (Europe)

B00E = Kindle 4 NoTouch (Europe?)

new: B00F = Kindle 3G Touch not clear if this is a kindle 3 or 4; Firmware version is 5.0.0 (store access via kindle only usable with http://amazon.com - not amazon.de)

B00F Kindle Touch 3G+WiFi Kindle 5 B011 Kindle Touch WiFi only Kindle 5 D01E = Kindle Fire Kindle 6

 Ann says:
If the Device Info screen shows wifi + 3G network capability, I wonder if someone goofed and sent you the wrong Kindle. Do you get a 3G connection if you turn on the wireless when away from your wifi network?

You can check your special offers subscription by going to your 'Manage Your Kindle' page ( https://amazon.com/myk ) and clicking 'Manage Your Devices'.

Some people have said it took a few days before the special offers show up, so don't be upset when they are there in the next few days.
