Why does 16gb cost 70 on Kindle Fire HD 8.9" and $50 on

Kindle Fire HD 7"?

Unless I'm missing something, this makes absolutely no sense.

(I'm referring to upgrading from the 16gb to the 32gb on both tablets)

Because that is the price they went with. Why does it have to make sense?

Because they look like idiotic scammers if it doesn't make sense.

In reply to an earlier post on Sep 26, 2012, 8:59:05 AM PDT
Because it's harder to cram that extra 16gb into the smaller case?

King Al says:
Maybe they think that since the 8.9" costs more, people are more likely to buy the extra 16 GB.

BooDittie says:
They're both roughly the same percent more for the higher capacity. Makes sense to me.

In reply to an earlier post on Sep 26, 2012, 9:06:58 AM PDT
Sloopydrew says:
What higher capacity, Dittie? Both go from 16gb to 32gb. That's the exact same capacity. But to upgrade one it costs $49 and the other costs $69. Again, it doesn't make any sense -- the reason I initially asked is I wondering if the memory in the 8.9" was solid state, or something. But apparently you can't say anything but lovey-dovey stuff about the Kindle here without being criticized.

You should probably direct your question to Amazon CS rather than a customer forum. No one here is going to be able to answer your question with certainty.

BooDittie says:
The higher capacity, from 16GB to 32GB, that higher capacity. Each doubles the capacity for roughly the same percent of the price of the lower capacity.

I didn't criticize anybody. You asked a question and I answered. Sure, I wasn't exactly lovey-dovey but your "idiotic scammers" comment hardly warranted that, now did it?

Nobody said any lovey-dovey thing here. The only post on this thread that deserves to be criticized is the post I'm replying to now.

But to upgrade one it costs $49 and the other costs $69.

Yes, but to downgrade one will save you $69 and the other only $49.

You can choose to look at things in a positive way or negative way - I choose positive - obviously, you like to be negative.

People who appear to assume the worst usually get rude replies. Just because other customers don't know the answer doesn't mean there isn't one. Just because Amazon doesn't reveal its proprietary marketing strategies on a public forum doesn't mean they aren't valid or sensible.

Is the price fair or not? Can you get a better value buying from someone else? Even if your worst I'm-being-exploited-and-victimized fantasies are true and Amazon is charging an extra $20 just because they can, how is that relevant if the bottom-line price is still competitive?

Maybe it costs more because they are manufacturing far fewer of them, so the price-per-part is higher.

I agree with #1 as a possibility, Steve.

At last, someone who listened in high school economics. Good post. Just to add a point to your comment, there are lots of reasons other than capitalistic greed (though that's certainly a possibility) to account for these kinds of differences. It's entirely possible, for example, that the specific components added to the 7" and 8.9" models are different despite the fact that each adds the same amount of memory. Devices are priced according to their overall cost to manufacture and a target profit margin. It's simply not possible to identify a single feature of two devices and determine the exact contribution each makes to the overall cost of a device.

If you want to puzzle over this sort of thing, why is it that eliminating the ads on the new KFHD is priced at $15 while the price difference for the various e-readers is $20?

I deleted my post because there are just so many possible reasons.

My primary thought that was number 1 is that the platforms have different hardware requiring faster memory on one over the other.

but it was such a wise post

You are definitely a glass half empty kinda person, I am thinking. lol

The odds are they went to hit price points with each model so you may be getting a bargain with one or both. After all, Apple charges a hundred bucks for the same jump in memory if I am not mistaken.

"you like to be negative."

No. I just don't like being robbed and all I initially did was ask a question (which was never answered, btw).

$69 for 16gb of space is outrageous. The new Nook HD that was announced earlier today charges $30 more for an extra 16gb in ALL their models -- the 7" or the 9" HD+ (and they let you add your own memory through an expansion, so you don't even need to upgrade to the 16gb through them, if you don't want to). Amazon's pricing on memory and on cases ($55 for a case, really?) is really out of line. I thought this company was better than this.
