Of course, since you haven't said what book it is (hint, hint,) I'm only guessing. But I'll guess it's a 'replica' exact copy of the textbook, preserving page layout. Publishers think it's necessary when there are graphs, illustrations, box text. They won't allow the text to reflow onto a smaller e-ink screen.

I don't think that's correct. I know the change to KF8 was implemented on the E-ink Kindles 3 (KK), Basic, and Touch because it caused some font sizing problems that had to be corrected by having authors/publishers change their books' formatting to be compatible with KF8.

This is from the software update announcement for version 4.1.0 for the Kindle Basic on June 4, 2012:
"* Support for books with complex layouts and formats with Kindle Format 8"

Actually the format of the book an app uses has nothing to do with the OS of the device. Amazon did develop an new format for the KF called KF8. The KF can use all the formats which the first through fourth generation (non-KF) Kindles use (AZW, PDF etc.) but the KF8 formatted books are only compatible with the KF.

I think you're being unrealistic, Erin. But, good, leave the publisher out of it and provide no feedback to it. If you really think its all Amazon's fault, you're still in the wrong place. Tell Amazon. We're just other customers.

Because the "code" for formatting a e-book on a device with an operating system (Android, iOS), or an e-reader is different between devices.

It's not Amazon creating the different formats, it's the device that forces the different formats. Amazon created an app to use for an Android device, a Windows device, a iOS device, and a e-reader device. Each device handles the formatting differently.

One size does not fit all.

The question though is what is the formatting difference and why is there one? Why is it that a publisher has to separately format a book for a kindle and kindle apps vs for kindle fire and kindle for PC? Why can't Amazon have one formatting that is compatible with kindle e-readers, kindle tablets, kindle apps and kindle for PC? It doesn't make sense to me that Amazon would require a publisher to completely reformat for each way of using kindle services.

That has not been my experience with textbooks, though it probably depends on the type of textbook. Scanning through this book I don't see a single image in it (whereas I have plenty of other image heavy books available on my kindle and kindle apps.).

In reply to an earlier post on Aug 28, 2013 8:19:55 PM PDT
Textbooks tend to be very image and graphic heavy. Those images and graphics don't tend to render too well on a 6" black and white screen.

Ask the publisher, Erin.

What is the formatting difference for a Kindle Fire compared to Kindle?
I recently saw one of my textbooks for school had a kindle version, I have a kindle paperwhite, I tried to buy the kindle version but couldn't because it told me it was only available for the kindle fire tablets, and kindle for PC. (I ended up installing kindle for PC and buying it). I don't understand why it should be available for Kindle fires and Kindle for PC but not any kindle e-readers, nor my android app, nor windows 8 kindle app. (And thus far doesn't seem to have any significant number of pictures. Though even if it did- why then can't it work on my phone or Windows 8 app?)

K. - are you referring to "The Third Wheel (Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Book 7)" ?

I tried to download a sample to see if it would go to my KK with 3G, it is not available in South Africa.

Edited to add: I tried again because I thought it was odd that I even had the option to click on "Try a Sample", and then got a message to say it is only available for the Fire, Android and iPad. Weird; that is not the same message I got the first time. I know I definitely tried the Kindle edition both times?

The books are available for all Kindles--my son has read them on my K4 and his Fire, but I can't send them to my Mac or iPhone apps.

ETA--maybe it's because you are not in the U.S.?

Contact the publisher of the books with your concerns. They are the ones that can/will change if enough people let them know.

Because the publisher decided to format it only for the Fire. Lot of childrens books that have a lot of illustrations will be formatted only for the tablet device due to it being color and the larger screen.

I love my kindle (I have the kindle 3G with keyboard). So much so, that I bought my 12 year old also one, because she loves to read.
Now she wants to buy the new Diary of a Wimpy kid, but it is only available on the kindle fire. Why is this???
I don't think this is fair, as she only wants to use her kindle for reading and not all the other features of the Fire..
The reason we bought the kindle is for the huge variety of books they have to offer (much more than any other e-reader). Now she can't read her favourite books...
