I couldn't read your wall of words. It would help if you would use things known as "paragraphs."

What are you talking about?? Amazon has given you the pricing for the first year for 250mb a month of data. If you want to know what the other plans are then go to the company's site that supplies it which is AT&T. Do you get upset at car companies when they sell you a new car and don't tell you what you will be paying for gas each year??

As for the storage on the Fire not to mention most tablets on market, they are not designed to replace your computer. If you expect that then buy the more expensive Windows tablets that are now coming out.

what amazon folks(amazon customers) are saying amazon push this product and streaming and then dont tell one about what actual cost of using the streaming @ home is going 2 be. it upsets customers and it one major reason I as visual impaired person I wont be buying the hd 4g anytime soon for two reasons one the device doesnt have nearly enough storage like a laptop harddrive does now and I dont like idea of not having an idea of cost of my online experience. see reason I was and am looking @ kindle 3g 4gs is that limits my monthly cost. hell if amazon told me I could pay 200 bucks and I not have a usage problem through year I might very well take it I might even take a higher price just for knowing my wireless bill was more or less fixed. it why now I am stuck on apple frist gen touch wifi becuase that only senseable choice now. what folks are saying is that not being more upfront and open about end user cost is amazon product problem like not having enough ram on laptop etc.

@Myra Joy. Go to an Apple store and their service is absolutely phenomenal!! You are right about Amazon having fabulous customer service as I have nothing but praise for the service I have received from Amazon over the years; but I love the fact that I can go to my local Apple store and get great service in person. Apple's store associates are very knowledgeable AND always greet you with a smile on their face and a willingness to help. Even though I did not buy my iPad nor my iPhone from the store, I have brought them both in at different times with questions, got my questions answered and have learned something new in addition to my original questions. They clean the product for you so when you walk out of the store the screen is crystal clear! So in this respect, I feel Apple and Amazon have equally great customer service.

Having both Apple and Amazon products (Fire), I would just add that comparing Apple Customer service to Amazon Customer service is not even close. Amazon is by far the best in customer service in the business. As good a reputation Apple has, it is still not even close.

You're correct. They updated the product page yesterday, I believe. The original description was ambiguous and while it's disappointing to see that the subsidized 4G lasts for only a year, it's an understandable business decision.

In reply to an earlier post on Sep 12, 2012, 9:12:17 AM PDT
They must have updated the product page based on all the questions here about the offer. It didn't have the 1 sentence about only for the first year of service before. Good to see that they are keeping track of people's questions and updating the description as needed. Thanks.

The 250mb for $49.99 is a promotion for the first year only as stated on the product page.

Groundbreaking 4G LTE Package
Amazon worked closely with AT&T to offer the most affordable 4G tablet data package. This 12 month AT&T 4G data package includes 250MB a month of blazing fast data, 20GB of additional Cloud Drive storage, and a $10 Amazon Appstore promotional credit, all for a one-time payment of only $49.99, with no monthly payments required. The $49.99 package is only available for the first year of service. If you need more data, additional 3GB and 5GB data plans from AT&T are also available for purchase. You can sign up for a data plan right from your device.

Ok, so throw out 4G. Now you looking at $299 vs. $499. No one expects the two devices to be even remotely close, in size, quality, functionality, and support. Thats a $200 difference!!!!!!! Everyone doesn't have $500 dollars. And everyone doesn't want/need the additional features.
Everyone doesn't need a sunroof, leather seats, AWD, V6 engine. A basic car will do for many.

Look, We get it, Apple makes a better product. But they also CHARGE 67%(aka $200) more.
Cross makes a better ball point pen than Bic, That doesnt' mean everyone is walking around with Cross pens.

p.s. You have NO CLUE what the iPad mini will cost, You also have NO CLUE if there even will be an iPad mini, so leave your "probably" at home and stick to the facts.

Dave says:
Exactly. The point is without a costly data plan or hot spot the $49 250MB 4G is not much good at all. $299 is significantly cheaper than the 10" IPAD, but it's by no means the same product (size, quality, functionality, support). And of course the IPAD mini will probably be around $250 when it comes out, so cheaper yet.

Quincy says: "I am sure this is a fine product. Once people start using it mobile, they are going to find themselves using it more and more, doing more things, more apps, more games, more video content. And they will find that 250 MB is not near enough. But rather than cut back, they will upgrade to the higher data plans. And then Amazon (and their carrier) will have you."

In 2 years of having a 3G model of the iPad I have never gone above 250MB in a single month. In fact I ave under 100MB a month. This includes plenty of email from 5 different accounts set to push email, web browsing, online apps and apps that push notifications, and the occasional streaming of music. Some of us have enough WiFi connectivity that we don't have heavy cellular needs. While it is not going to be enough for a lot of users, a 250MB plan is perfect for quite a number of people.

Quincy says: "So it comes down to paying $50 more than the latest and greatest IPAD, with a one inch smaller screen, fewer apps, fewer free apps, and almost certainly less support."

It is $499 for the 32GB Fire HD with 4G. It is $729 for the 32GB iPad with 4G. On top of that the min plan for the 4G iPad is the $20/m 1GB Verizon plan grandfathered in for those of us who had it on the iPad 2, vs the $50/yr lowest plan for the Fire. For $499 all you get with an iPad is the 16GB WiFi only model. In no way shape or form is the iPad cheaper for the equivalent product.

Well said Quincy..I encourage people to let "customer service" know through "contact us." I returned the original Fire because of this very problem. Amazon is very creative and maybe they can negotiate a solution with a supplier like att.

Then don't buy it/them. It's that simple. I'm pretty sure Ammy will survive.

If you have a mobile hotspot device, why would you buy the 4G Fire? You would be buying the $299 version, which is significantly cheaper than any iPad.

In reply to an earlier post on Sep 10, 2012, 10:32:03 AM PDT
Dave says:
why did you short-change IPAD on the hard drive size, but didn't short-change Fire on the screen size? 1" out of 10" is significantly smaller, 10% in diameter but even more in screen area. IMO, this is a more critical factor than hard drive size anyway.

also, you said "Apple iPad with No service, and no capabilty for service even if you wanted to". Not true. With a mobile hot-spot any Wi-Fi device can become mobile. In fact, for people with multiple devices, this is becoming the cheapest overall alternative.

It is true the two items really cannot be compared. And the Kindle Fire may turn out to be a fine product. My point is the 4G aspect of the Kindle Fire is not really of any utility, but most novice users/buyers won't know this (especially from the ads), and they are in for a rude awakening.

Dave says:
You're right - it is apples to oranges. The IPAD is a known quality product. You don't know anything about the quality of the Kindle Fire. If you have a problem with IPAD, you bring it to an Apple Store. What are you going to do when your Kindle breaks?

The 4G Kindle Fire is $550. The new IPAD is $500 (Wi-Fi version - 1" bigger screen). That's $50 more for Kindle Fire. Sure, you also get the 250MB data per month, but that is, for all intents and purposes, useless. The ONLY thing you'll be able to do is email and light surfing. Who is going to buy the 4G version for only that? No "stunning" HD, no streaming video, no music, no Skype, no Amazon Prime while you are mobile. Nothing. No, you will have to do that from home. And even Wi-Fi hotspots like airports, Starbucks and McDonald's won't support that content streaming.

The 4G Kindle Fire is only good for email and light surfing. Yet Amazon is ballyhooing the great video and sound and the HD content. You'll bust your 250MB data limit streaming your first HD content. Once people shell out $550 for a product that is smaller than IPAD, inferior in quality and support to IPAD, and more expensive than IPAD, there will be a backlash when they find they have to use it at home or else incur huge data charge overages ($15/mo for every 250MB over). One HD movie is approximately 3-4GB. Do the math - that is one expensive movie!

Quincy! I'm fine that we all have different "opinions" on what works best for us as individuals, we have that right...But you gotta stop messing with the numbers and facts. Where are you getting $50 more than the New iPad???? iPads cost way more than $50!

You are comparing Oranges to Apples (no pun intended)
$550 for a Cellular embedded 32GB 8.9inch Fire HD with One year of service (250MB/month) vs.??????
$499 "WiFi ONLY" 16GB 10inch Apple iPad with No service, and no capabilty for service even if you wanted to. You can't compare a wifi only to a Cellular AND differnt size hard drives, And, a tablet with monthly service vs. one with not! Let me help you compare apples to apples.

$299 for a Wifi Only 16GB 8.9inch Fire HD vs. $499 Wifi Only 16GB 10inch Apple iPad.................Delta = $200

Don't get me wrong, I aggree with most of what you say in comparing Apps & features, no doubt is an iPad a superior product in hardware. But the discussion is on cost. Yes, a BMW is better than my bike. But I don't rather save my money. And thats fine, that works for me. But we can't go stating that you can go get BMWs for a couple hundread bucks, when that is false.

Dave says:
You nailed it in the last paragraph. So it comes down to paying $50 more than the latest and greatest IPAD, with a one inch smaller screen, fewer apps, fewer free apps, and almost certainly less support. The $50 year 4G access is the teaser, but its not of much use other than for light use, which then begs the question "Why did you spend the extra money for the 4G?" I can do email, light surfing and games with my smartphone now, and it fits in my pocket.
