How many book samples are being talked about here, and why can't you just redownload them?

Just speaking for myself, I don't keep more than four sample books max on my device. They are usually a chapter or less in length, and I know that if I don't read them soon after the book blurb or referral piqued my interest I may totally forget about them.

I have the same issue here with the *last* iOS kindle app update. Funny though is that it was my first time considering I already have changed iDevices, updated iOS and updated the app without loosing any content (sample or not they are all user content by concept). Disappointing, more than 2 years and not a single word from Amazon. This is usability / app design 101, you can't toss away user custom content without at least telling clearly to the user in the first place that they will do so.

Missy, Samples are not stored in your Archive. There is no way to get them back if they are gone from the app.

if you reset your kindle to factory defaults, there's no way to get them back - I always send a sample then add the books to a wishlist I've named Samples so I can also get the sample on another kindles. Samples are never stored on your account, just on your device

My sample books have all disappeared!!!!!!! I wanted to buy some of those books at a later date. How do I get them all back on my kindle?

I would like this feature also. I have tons of samples and would hate to lose em

In reply to an earlier post on Jul 25, 2014, 5:48:53 AM PDT
samples aren't purchases why should they keep all those there? That would then cause issues to anyone who DOESN"T want samples kept. I do not want them kept. I would hate to have to go to my cloud to have to delete them. If you want to keep track of samples then you should implement a way to do so. I send a sample to my device and if I am not able to look/read that sample at that time I put the book on a wishlist that consists only of Samples that I will follow up with later.

CBRetriever says:
that's why I use a wishlist for mine (plus I don't clog up my kindle with scads of samples) - they are device specific and what you did created a new entity (device)

I know it's a year later, but I had this same problem, then read everywhere that one should uninstall then redownload the app to get it operating properly. You would think your initial restore would count as a sort of reinstall and transfer Kindle contents just as well as anything else, especially when supposedly "backed up to the cloud." After the un- and reinstall, that's when you can actually read and redownload your purchased books, but the reinstall makes you lose samples and the other device documents in the process. Too bad not ALL items are backed up to the Kindle cloud... Or iCloud. Frustrating.

Willa Cline says:
A few months ago I started having problems with books on my iPad Kindle app. I can send a sample to my iPad, and then I open the Kindle app, and the sample will download, then immediately disappear. Sometimes it won't *immediately* disappear, and I will open the sample, then it will disappear *while I'm reading it.* Sometimes even with purchased books, it will download and then disappear, but in this case, I can download it again from the cloud. What I used to do was download a sample to see if I liked it, and if I did, might either buy it or put it on my wishlist, but now if I run across a book I even *think* I might like, I have to put it on my wishlist because I have no assurance that it will either get to my iPad or stay there once it does. Then if I finally do get to read the sample and hate the book, I have to go to my wishlist and delete it. I always have to hope that no one goes to my wishlist to actually buy me anything before I've done that, though.

Edited to add -- I just saw the post about taking a screenshot, and I have resorted to that as well. Download a bunch of samples, and as soon as they download, take a *quick* screenshot and hope they don't disappear before I do that. What a pain.

I used to have a ton of samples for the same reason and then I found I rarely used them or checked them out and just started wish lists instead. You can make more than one.

I have also suffered this issue. All my samples are gone. This is very irritating.

Good pt Miet. Academicians use samples as reminders or book lists though. It probably can be circumvented if wish lists were accessible via the Kindle app or Kindle device. Oh well. You live and you learn.

Millions? It only happens when you upgrade your device. I don't think Amazon ever considered that someone would have 200 samples. Most people download a couple of samples, read them, and buy or not buy. I do have some old samples from a year or so ago, but I'll probably delete them and definitely won't miss them alot if they ever go poof.

I agree! I am outraged. Why isn't amazon responding to this since it has obviously happened to millions of us.

...I cannot believe they did this to me. I have samples from YEARS AGO as a reminder to one day purchase.

Yeah, i got the same problem too, i feel really really frustrated. I have been wasted a lot of time for reviewing, choosing, and and collecting the samples for future buying decisions. Now they just have gone completely without any words, explanation or warning. :((

After getting the BookData.sqlite file using "iPhone Backup Viewer", you can use sqlite3 to read the database. If not already installed on your mac/linux/windows machine, sqlite3 can be downloaded from.
In a shell, run "sqlite3 BookData.sqlite" and to get all the books in the backup, type this query:
select ZDISPLAYAUTHOR, ZDISPLAYTITLE from zbook order by zdisplaytitle ;

Different symptom here - restored ipod. kindle app has all the samples...well it has the titles and covers, but none of their contents....and there doesnt seem to be any way to remove them!

In reply to an earlier post on Mar 25, 2013, 5:18:41 AM PDT
After sending the sample it is as easy as a split second in one instance or a few clicks in another. If sending the sample from PC send the sample then hit the back button and add to the WL. From the Fire (only one I have next to me) tap send sample and then after that is completed tap add to wishlist. If you like the book and buy it the book is removed from your wishlist. Every now and again you can go clear the WL of books that you didn't buy. The wishlist doesn't take any time to load. If you hated the sample you can move the book from the "samples" wish list to a wish list aptly named "hated - never buy". Neither wish list need to be public since they are for your own uses - then no one would gift you a book you hate.
