And who are you to judge them for judging others? Sounds hypocritical to me...

"Ignorant" doesn't mean what you think it does. It does, however, apply to you with precision.

And here, I thought your comment was... Just sayin...

If you were upset enough to start a thread - on Christmas, no less - it's not unreasonable to expect that you might actually be interested in answers. JMO.

And part of that life is doing your homework. Someone old enough to be a grandmother should know enough to check into something she is spending a good deal of money on - if she's not comfortable with technology, there must be someone in her life off the network who would have helped her.

Thank you, I believe this is what happened. I will check with the B & M store.

This is an ignorant comment and who are you to judge someone else? Not everyone is addicted to technology and tracking every response. There is life off of the network.

i want the ads- i bought a second kindle to GET the ads. i can never see why people get all upset about something that says " if you want one of these 50 books for only a dollar, press here".

of course, now that i'm a " 4 kindle family", i'm irritated that i can only choose one of those 50 books for a buck. i'd like to have 3 of them , thank you very much.

You know, I wonder if it's the difference between a family where Grandma says, "I'd like to get them Fires," and Mom/Dad says, "Wow! Cool! They'll love that!" as an informed decision kind of thing,

Mom/Dad saying, "Um. Okay. Whatever. If that's what you'd like to get them," sort of thing, where Mom/Dad doesn't realize WHAT it is their kid is going to be receiving.

It's a good idea for those folks for whom a $512 tablet is out of reach. By knocking off a few bucks, bringing the Fire down to less than $200 (for the 7"), it makes more people say, "Yeah. I can afford that. I want one."

Mind you, I find the Special Offers to *BE* just ads much of the time. There's nothing special about a movie poster. But who CARES? I don't even notice them. Swipe on, let me get to whatever I needed the tablet on for in the first place.

I noticed that, too. Most people were excited for their new toys, and just had "Hmmn...How do I...?" questions. More converts!! :0)

You know?

Christmas day was very pleasant here. All the posters with their new devices asking questions that were reasonable. Maybe a bit redundant but people new to the forum were learning how to use both the devices and these discussion threads so the repeated postings were understandable.

Then there is this "x" person. Had to be at least one who immediately jumped on the "this is a conspiracy to defraud old grandma" train. Didn't even track the thread to get answers either. Never came back to acknowledge responses.

Oh well. A good day overall and I'm excited for the new (rational) Kindlers!

Laura, good point. I wasn't thinking of buying them in a brick and mortar store. In that case, they might be subject to the return policy of that store.

I believe all Fires sold at B&M stores are sold with special offers. If Grandma was relying on a store employee to alert her to the special offers, they probably had no clue.

x, many people think it is a good idea to agree to see ads in exchange for having the advertisers help supplement the price of their Kindles. That's what is happening with the Special Offers.

You have a choice when purchasing a Kindle to either get the discounted one with Special Offers, or the full price one without them.

You can also buy out of the Special Offers after you purchase a device, if you like.

It's made clear on the page where you purchase the Kindle. I'm not sure which model they got, but you can see it on this one, as an example:

Kindle Fire HD 7"

You have a couple of choices here. You could buy out of the Special Offers, or, if you find that unacceptable, Amazon has a generous thirty day return policy on Kindles.

Since the introduction of Special Offers models, they have tended to be more popular than the non-ad-supported equivalent, and the Special Offers version is now the default (I would assume for that reason, although I'm just guessing...I'm just a Kindle owner like you).

Amazon gives you a choice: get a discounted Kindle because it has been supported by advertisers and agree to see those ads, or pay the full price and not see ads.

You can always pay the difference to have the special offers removed.

Posted on Dec 25, 2012, 8:04:10 PM PST

Each Kindle is available with or without special offers, with the special offers ones having a lower price. Their grandmother apparently bought the ones with special offers. If you'd like, you (or grandma) can pay to have those removed.

Grandma was NOT being taken advantage of--each Kindle's product page shows the price for the device with or without special offers.

PeepDittie says:
A) grandma didn't bother to look at what she was buying, or B) grandma was too cheap to pay full price for the non-special offers version and went for the subsidized price. Apparently grandma thought it was a good idea.

Ask Amaxon. It's Amazon's product after all. Their Grandmother was not taken advantage of. If you don't want them, just go to Mamage You Kindle and unsubscribe for a fee.
