How can I watch videos I have on my computer on my Kindle Fire? I copied an MP4 video from my computer to the "Videos" folder on my Kindle Fire, unplugged it, and went into the Videos tab on the Fire but it wasn't there! Did I miss something?

Yes, you need to go to the "Gallery" app, not the Videos tab. Per the Fire manual, Videos only works for videos downloaded from Amazon.

LindaC says:
so are you saying that personal videos transferred can be viewed using the Gallery? I am having no luck viewing my puppy video clips even though I can see them on the Kindle when I 'explore' it when my Kindle is connected to my laptop after transferring. What folder does Gallery look in?

In reply to an earlier post on Mar 26, 2012, 2:22:46 PM PDT
The Gallery app is accessed from the Apps section.

I actually meant in what folder does the Gallery app look? Books? Videos? Docs? Music? when you upload photos or videos?

I put my videos in a Videos folder on my Fire. I don't remember if that folder was already there or if I created it.

Linda - The gallery app looks in all the folders. I have videos in different folders and several sub-folders and it's never had a problem finding them.

LindaC says:
Ok, so my video clips are in .mov format - not supported by Kindle Fire, so I find a free converter (Convertor Lite) and convert it to .mp4 (chose 640x400) and sent it to Video folder on my Kindle. This file is not supported on the Kindle and doesn't play on my laptop either. Does this mean that no video clip from my camera can be played on my Kindle?? What am I missing?

How did you try to view the file? Through videos? That won't work, you have to go through the pre loaded Gallery app to see it.

B. Marks says:
MP4 is a container format, not a codec. A codec is a compressor that's used to compress the audio and video portions of the file. MP4 is the way those are organized and an MP4 can contain most any codec.

The Fire plays MP4 files in h.264 video codec and AAC audio codecs very happily so if you'll convert with that in mind you'll be able to play them on the Fire. Most any converter will be able to do that for you. I'm not familiar with the converter you're using so I can't comment on that one but I'd be surprised if it won't do it.

LindaC says:
When I open the Gallery, the file is there as a black box, and when I click on it it says "cannot play video an error has occuured...may have been interruped or is an unsupported format. Please try again" . I think I gave it enough time - I clicked on Disconnect before pulling the USB out. There are various HD file formats available for conversion, but they don't say whether they are H.263 (.3gp, .mp4), or H264 AVC (.3gp, .mp4) - these formats come from the "Files Kind Fire Recognizes" part of the Help and Feedback app on the Kindle.

LindaC says:
Thanks, Barryem, it finally worked. Going with the HD conversion rather than the low-res 640x480 and putting it in the Video folder using 'move/copy' rather than the 'send' option finally made it work. Thanks again - can't imagine why they don't have explicit directions for this - I can't be the only person with camera videos and a Kindle Fire.

I couldn't find an app titled "Gallery". However, I did buy "media gallery organizer" is this right? My videos show up in the folders when I search my Kindle folders via laptop...but they arent there when I search for them on the kindle...which isn't allowing me to import by the app cause its saying they arent there.
Frusterated :(

On the new model Fire you use an app named "Personal Videos" in place of Gallery to view non-Amazon video.

Posted on Dec 28, 2012, 8:29:14 AM PST
Thanks. Sorry to be a hassel, but I just searched for Personal Videos at the store and nothing popped up of relevance. Mainly fitness stuff. I have the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 16 mb just so you know.

Is it the "aVia Media Player" app that pops up when I search "personal videos"?

Posted on Dec 28, 2012, 8:39:34 AM PST
No, it is actually named "Personal Videos" and is in the Apps tab. You don't need to search for it, it is installed on your Fire.

Oh ok. So I found it.! Now my only problem is it tells me to copy files to the Movies directory on the kindle. I copy the files under movies and they show up in the Kindle Movies file on my computer and thats as far as that goes.

Posted on Dec 28, 2012, 8:52:16 AM PST
They still have to be in a supported format - VP8 or MP4.

Loro says:
I found MX player will play a variety of formats without the need for converting. It is a third part app so you must change the Fire setting to allow it. It was recommended in the forum, so just do a search to read up on it. You may have to fine tune it once installed, to allow for the proper codec.

Ok thanks, you've been a big help. So they aren't showing, because of format? If i format the properly it will show I'm assuming.

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 28, 2012, 9:14:22 AM PST
Yes, once they are in the proper format they will show as icons on the Personal Videos app.
