Help! I've just updated my Kindle app on my iPad (the update allows more color books- children's titles, graphic novels, etc. to be seen in color) and now my Kindle app doesn't work at all. Should I uninstall/reinstall? Anyone else having trouble?

I've looked at the reviews for the update (and note, I didn't even use the last update--I like the boy sitting under the tree! Plus, all of the extras don't apply to me) and it seems like people are having a crash issue. Perhaps you can restart your device?

If not, you can always revert to the previous version (delete the app, then sync with your pc and the old one should come back).

Uuuugh. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, and it's still crashing over and over. I think I'm going to have to try your suggestion about reverting to the previous version, which means I just wasted some good $ on books for my kids that we won't be able to read on the iPad. Though I have to assume they're going to fix this bug if others are having the same trouble. Can you link me to the reviews you're reading? I'd love to add mine! And thanks so much for the response!

Can't link; the reviews are in the App Store for the new update.

Do you have the latest version of iOS? You should restart your device as well.

I did restart, and yes, I have the latest version. I'll check in the App Store. Thanks!

I had planned to read several books to my young students on the large screen tomorrow (last day of school) but the app keeps crashing. Also tried reinstalling the app and rebooting my iPad but no luck. What a shame!

I have the Kindle app and all of its updates and have had no problems with crashing. I use it daily.

I have the new app and have had no issues so far. I like the new margins and the clearer text.

It has only happened since I started to download picture books.

6-15-2012 9:50pm Pacific. Yes! Just updated kindle on ipad ios (5.1.1) because it was asking for the udpate. we have several hundred amazon titles, mostly read on fire, but everyone in the family uses the kindle app on something, ipad, touchpad, itouches, pc ... it's the ipad app crashing, and after full reboots, not sure how to resolve. hesitating to delete due to the sheer number of books we read, can't keep the app up more than 3 seconds, so unsure how many are on the device.

asking the family, and yes, the update was for picture/comic books, they had tried to download one of the new titles and it said it required the update. Sequence - tried to download a Big Nate "What could possibly go Wrong?" ... that's the comic title, ironic ... the app update was required, it was never downloaded when the crashes started, but now it's being read on another device ... for now our ipad "kindle app" is unuseable

another update - deleted app on kindle, resync'd the device, afterwards selecting ipad, then apps on tabs above for ipad, had to reselect from itunes to sync "kindle app".
It must have then recovered the older version, because Big Nate: What Could Possibly Go Wrong? showed "Item not available for this device type. Your Kindle requires a software update to view this content. " ... for now I'm sticking with this older version on the iPad. I did lose what was local to the ipad, but cloud archive should allow picking whatever else may not require the update for now. Not sure how I'll be able to tell when this is fixed, so I'll be interested in what others find if similar experience.

Just a minute, I'm getting errors when I download my "in progress" book ... if the problem persists. try to deregister your application and register it again... this will have to wait until morning

Same here. I bought a graphic novel to see what it is like. Fables something. Kindle app crashes whenever it tries to download it. I guess I'll have to delete that book and wait for the update.

I was having the same problems exactly. I de-registered the app on my iPad, then re-registered it with Kindle. That fixed the crash problem for me. I believe I found the option to de-register the device in the settings menu within the app.

tried your solution. unfortunately didn't work for me. still crashes after selecting a book. iPad 3rd Gen with iOS 6, complete new install.

iPad 2 with iOS 6 as an update with preinstalled Kindle shows no problems

I'm in the exact same situation - spent close to $75 on new books for vacation, and now I'm sitting on the beach with a crashing app. While I loved my Kindle before I switched to iPad and I generally like Amazon as a company, (speaking as an iPad developer myself) it's not that hard to create a working e-book reader that doesn't crap the bed when you ask it to read you some Lord Of The Rings. Well, goodbye Amazon, and here I come, iBookstore. Pretty unhappy I have to re-buy all my books again but I guess that's what I get for backing an unstable app.

In reply to an earlier post on Jun 23, 2012 6:37:01 PM PDT
You don't have to rebuy your books.
You do need to de-register then delete the app, then re-download it and re-register. Your books will be in the archive. Yes, it's a PITA that you have to re-download them. Yes, it looks like Amazon screwed up, but don't get carried away. If you are a developer, you know that upgrades and revisions sometimes make things worse not better.
Amazon is working to fix this, they are in contact with people from this forum who reported the problem.

I am also having the same problem. Just the flash of the Kindle opening for a couple of seconds then back to Ipad desktop. Started two days ago. My Kindle 1 is running version 4.3.5. Updated the latest Kindle App when it came out and had no problems until 23rd June. (Thought it might be because I downloaded a PDF to read in Kindle). However have done that before and reading this thread it looks like an application issue.

Well no one has contacted me! I also see that the App now has more low reviews than high! Away from home at the moment without being able to access my books. If I delete it I will lose all my books and doc's from non Amazon sources so I am reluctant to do that.

I am resisting updates and am still on 2.9, bring back the boy on the hill and i might upgrade, plus i hate the cloud option, I'd like the option. Imaywant to reread a book onholidays and not have to have access to wifi to get them...

In reply to an earlier post on Jul 22, 2012 6:16:50 AM PDT
The "cloud" is no different than the "archive" that's always been there.

My ipad is having trouble opening PDFs too. it is slow to load the home page, and crashes when I try to open some specific files. I am going to try to revert tonight. Thanks to all of you for this suggestion.

This issue is still happening for me. However, it mainly occurs when trying to view pdf files that I sent to my kindle email address. Steps to reproduce:
1. send a simple one page pdf to my kindle email.
2. new pdf shows up on the kindle in "cloud" mode. Select the download arrow.
3. Switch to "device" mode.
4. open the pdf
5. looks ok for a several seconds. but just wait...
6. Kindle app crashes
7. restart kindle app
8. the pdf shows up in "cloud" mode as not download yet (I have the download arrow). Go back to step 2 to try again.
The app crashes every time.

Some books that I buy via amazon.com seem to work better and don't cause crashes. However, they some times sporadically show up as needing to be downloaded again!!! This sucks when I am in a non-wifi area and want to continue a book I was reading.

Like everyone else, I didn't have this problem with the old kindle versions on my ipad. I have alot of kindle books. Maybe the problem is related to a bug dealing with a large list of books? I am not sure what is going on when I successfully open a one page pdf and sit there for a few seconds not doing anything and then the app crashes. What are they doing? Starting some sort of crash timer :) Maybe they are trying to report my current position in the pdf? This is driving me crazy. I want to have all my books in digital form and not have to to take up so much space in my apartment with book cases. I am willing to send Amazon my iPad if they want to use it for a few weeks to debug this problem.
