I want to use a KF HD as a mp3 player for my car. Can it:1. import songs via drag and drop directly from my pc (no cloud)? songs by folders (classic, country, pop etc)? all my songs in shuffle mode? 4. play midi files? 5. play the songs at the same volume ((I think it is called normalizing by using regain data in the song file)?

I also want to know if I can upload mp3 files to the Kindle HD without them going to the cloud. Simply put, if the answer is yes I will buy one, if no, I will look elsewhere.
I do not need the cloud to backup the songs

I would like to connect my New Kindle Fire HD to my Bose Acoustic wave to play audio from Pandora or IHeart readio through it. I can connect my IPod via a 3.5 mini jack / Left/Right audio cable through the Headphone input but am not having ANY success with the Kindle Fire HD. Is it capable of doing this?

I also want to play MP3 files directly on my Kindle Fire HD without having to go to the cloud. It appears you cannot do that. It appears that Amazon deliberately made that impossible. It appears that Amazon is creating its own "walled garden" with the Kindle Fire. I regret having bought a Kindle Fire HD and I will advise others not to buy this device.

Richard - You most certainly can play MP3s on your Fire without using the cloud. If you purchased them from Amazon, you can download them from the cloud on to your Fire. If you have MP3s on your computer, you can transfer them via USB cable to your Fire and play them. It's really, really easy...

I am trying to do this right now and am unable. My KF HD is connected to my computer through USB. When I transferred a few songs to the Kindle I got a warning to the effect that I might see the files on the Kindle but be unable to play them. On the Kindle I cannot even see the files much less play them. Yet from the computer I can see that the files are indeed on the Kindle and I can even play them, but through the computer speakers, not the Kindle. Where do I go from here?

It is true that Amazon designed the Kindle Fire HD to try to force you to buy all your content from their site. I don't blame them; after all they would not survive if they didn't make money. But I have found that the Fire HD is a remarkable little device that can do great things but you need to download a few free apps (from Amazon) to make full use of it. Here are a few that I have found that work great.
To find files you have downloaded to the device you need a file manager -FIle Expert is great:
File Expert with Clouds

There are dozens of free apps on Amazon that can turn your Kindle Fire HD into whatever you want it to be. Go to the app store and type free apps into the search. Read the reviews because not all apps are worth using...but some are great.

I have a kindle fire HD 8.9 I used the usb port and transferred all my mp3s to it to the music folder. They show up on the kindle but will not play. they play fine on the computer and my phone as well but will not play on the kindle. the art work doesn't even show up.

B. Marks says:
The warning that you might not be able to play the music isn't something Amazon put in the Kindle Fire. It's part of Android. You can safely ignore it. Put the files into the Music folder on the Fire HD and you'll find it with the rest of your music after you disconnect. The Fire will play it just fine.

There are a number of apps for the Kindle Fire HD that will give you whatever features you want if the built-in music app lacks a feature you need.

There are a lot of music playing apps but you shouldn't need them just to play the music. When I made my first post I connected my Fire HD to my PC and transferred some music and listened to it. It worked just fine. I usually don't use the Fire HD for music but it has excellent speakers and I may just start doing this more.

If the songs aren't playing I suggest connecting the Fire to your PC again and copying those songs back to another folder on your PC. Don't let them get mixed up with the original files already on your PC. Then see if the files copied from the Fire will play on the PC. You might have a problem with the files.

Then I don't know why you're having a problem. I copied MP3 files from my PC to my Kindle Fire HD's Music folder. I disconnected the Fire and tapped the music tab and there were the songs. I tapped one and it played. I played the others while I was typing my reply to you while ago.

I suggest calling Kindle support at this point. What your trying to do should work fine and easily. It's very basic stuff.

Barry, I am a longtime owner of both an original kindle fire and a 7" kindle fire hd and have encountered some unprotected mp3 files that will not play for some unknown reason. These files were downloaded using a wireless transfer function of ES3 just as I have with numerous other files with no adverse performance. There is something about some mp3 files that is not obvious to the non-kindle players as they show up in the libraries of the other players and play fine but do not on the kindle players.

I was having this issue too, the basic Kindle Music App wouldn't play the MP3s I copied from the PC, I used ES Explorer's Music App and now they work fine. It is not as smooth an app as the Kindle app but it works fine!

Edit: I just used the ES Explorer App and when I clicked the song, I selected Amazon MP3 as the default player and now for some reason all of the songs are playing through that app now. Weird!

We use 'Box' for music practice and I can download so it's available offline, however my Kindle will not play it - do I need an app?

I'm having the exact same issues. Maybe a different Kindle version? Mine is a Fire HD7 bought new last Christmas. This definitely isn't an easy fix for at least some of us. I have been through a lot trying to fix this and just came across this thread after many hours researching and experimenting. So, do you know which app that will work with Kindle Fire that will allow you to add your own mp3 files and play them? (and no iTunes won't at least with my version.... went round and round on that one right after getting this and only solution seems to be rewriting some of the operating system.... not going there). Thank you to anyone who can actually My son is getting almost as frustrated as I am and that isn't helping anything. ;)
*Update: See Paul T's post about the ES app as well as my reply to him. His suggestion worked for us! ;)

Paul T, Thank you, thank you, thank you! This is going to work fine. I like it's little added player and playlist feature.... not something you would expect from this type of app.... especially when free. Mine didn't pop into the Amazon player, but that is ok. When we are in the mood for these other songs, we will go into this app. Thanks again for your clear information and great recommendation of this app. It looks like it might fix a couple of other hiccups I have occasionally when downloading files and trying to save exactly where I want....a couple of apps have a mind of their own. ;)
