Thank you for your post! I had tried holding the power button down for several seconds, but not twenty. I've never had an issue with it prior to that so hopefully this will be the extent of it. I'll just have to be weary of images lol. I love this device, I've had it for about a month now and that was the only time it ever froze, I'm surprised to see that so many people have had so many issues with it!

Just had my kindle fire freeze up. We have 3 of these. When I had a problem with the first one they replaced it. I noticed the problem after my kid downloaded a tic tac doe game.
Last night I noticed my other kid downloaded the app for the same tic tac doe game and go figure his kindle is frozen today. Not sure if there is a link but 2 kindles crap out after the same app is downloaded????

You should report this to Kindle Customer Service.

They can probably walk you through clearing the apps and restore the Fire but the game seems like it could be a problem for others.

Over the past two days we have tried two different Fires. They both froze on the homepage a little while after we downloaded some apps like Netflix. Tried the hard reset, charging it and hard reset again. Nothing worked so I got a refund.

I'm having the same problems with my Fire. I even got a replacement one and it keeps freezing up. It's fully charged, so it's not a battery issue. At first I could get it to work for a few minutes, but now I can't get it to unfreeze even after several reboots.

I got my first Fire Nov 17 and it didn't act up until just recently. I got my replacement yesterday and it's acting up already, worse than the first one.

If you look way back on this subject, a lot of us got Fires that did the same thing at Christmas. They all needed an upgrade in software and froze up. My replacement was from a new batch that already had the upgrade and it has worked flawlessly. I can't believe they have not done a recall on the ones that are duds.

Thank you sooooo much I was afraid with all the previous negative posts about getting a new one, that mine was toast - this did the trick. Thank you again for posting this!

I have 3 devices. Don't charge it when it's frozen. Let the battery drain completely. Plug it in to the charger and it will start right back up.

I returned mine for a refund and the guy at the UPS store said they had sent another one back earlier that day. I'm hoping they get the bugs worked out. If so, I may give it another try.

I found my Kindle frozen. It was turned off & charging, at some point it blinked on & froze. Shows the clock but the time isn't updating

Push the power button for 30 seconds.

H. Thomas says:
From what I have gathered, there are several issues involved - all of which let you end up with a frozen screen.
To summarize:
1. Some Fires shipped with software that updated as soon as you connected to WiFi the first time and permanantly froze them up. This was my case - returned it and new one had updates already loaded and it works FINE!!
2. Some freeze and won't turn off the regular way for various other reasons and respond to a hard reset - which is hold the power button 20-30 seconds, release, and then restart.
3. Others freeze and do not respond to the hard reset - these require letting the battery drain all the way down so it turns off. Then plug into charger and start up.
This little thing is the first gereration - it has some bugs no doubt, but when it works, it is a dandy. The got caught with their pants down at Christmas time no less. This was the most gifted item of the season and I know Amazon was not up for a recall that big. I plan on buying more - but maybe AFTER the bugs are gone.

I just had my Kindle Fire freeze on the same web page. It would not automatically shut down after the allotted time so I did a manual reboot by holding the "off" button down until it shut down on its own. This was about 10 seconds for me. It also took awhile to turn back on once I pushed the "on/off" button again. Works fine now.
