CBRetriever says:
indexing that many books at one time would likely lock your kindle up - possibly for days on end

it's recommended that at the most 20-30 books be downloaded and processed at the same time

No mention of the change in turning wireless on/off in the list of changes!? Seems that the new "airplane mode" is more difficult to get to (under settings) and counter-intuitive to use. Please change back to the simple wireless on/off on the main menu!

CBRetriever says:
unfortunately it won't be a change back, but if they change it, it will be in a new update which will, of course, have something that will make someone else unhappy - such is the nature of updates

Personally I think they should keep the "Airplane mode" label but move it back up to the first-level menu, maybe with a "Turn WiFi off" subheading. That would satisfy the people who want to see an "Airplane mode" and also address the issue of the number of steps now needed to turn WiFi on and off.

Works for me!

Oh look! We've had another visit from the DVF!

What's the worst case? You do a hard reset and start over. It's not like the Kindle is going to explode or anything.

When I got my K Touch, I plugged it in and then went to MYK and clicked on all of my books one right after the other until I'd done all six hundred of them. Then I just left it alone for a while to do its indexing, and then imported collections. It didn't cause any problems.

I've since removed most of the books, but only because I discovered Calibre and prefer looking through Calibre to see what I want to read next. OT, I'm one of those people that really likes to look at covers, and I love Calibre's full-screen cover browser ;)

Another voice in favor of returning Wi-Fi controls to the main menu options. In addition to purchasing/downloading books, that mode is useful for quick online research. Who really wants to take multiple steps for what should be a simple task? Remember developers: KISS!

But as a wise person stated up thread, when and if this issue is resolved in an update, there'll be some other change to rail out about.

thankee for the compliment

on my Touch (the only one I've used to go to wikipedia), the moment I hit the more, I get a screen asking if I want to turn the wireless on, so it's not a problem being in a book

Haven't tried that with my K4, but I suspect it's the same

Don Jones says:
Annoyingly, you've removed the ability to turn wireless on/off from the menu, which used to require three clicks. Now I have to use the Settings menu, at triple the number of clicks. This may make the Kindle more "consistent" with other models, but it's bloody annoying for such an oft-used function. I can't believe that "harder to use" has been pitched as an "improvement." Please consider putting wireless on/off back on the menu.

Actually it's TEN if you are at the "Special Offers" screen.

Talk about cumbersome and not user friendly...

Eloopmot says:
If you have the special offers version of the K4 and your device is powered OFF in airplane mode, notice what is said on each and every special offer screen, even when the device is turned off. It says to "Hold the 5 way controller button for details. Turns on wireless". Hold the button and the device powers up in wifi mode. If you don't want that special offer just hit Home or Menu to do what you were going to do. That is two clicks from OFF in airplane mode to home or menu in wifi mode.

On any K4 (with or without the offers) if you are at the home screen in airplane mode, click Menu-Shop online-Selection-OK. Turns on wifi. Then do what you were going to do using menu or go back home.

You still have to go through Menu-Settings to go back to airplane mode, but getting to wifi is a breeze.

If they were going to make a change, having Settings at the top of the menu would make a lot of sense. Of course they want you to go straight to Shop Online, which is understandable.

I see I am not the only one who hates the new wirelesss/airplanmode change. While I like the new font, it is not worth this change in wireless. Is there a way to uninstall updates?

Posted on Jun 22, 2012, 3:34:31 PM PDT
CBRetriever says:
no, there isn't and you can blame the people who want all the parental controls (greatest part of new update)

In reply to an earlier post on Jun 22, 2012, 3:39:18 PM PDT
HATE this update! I used to be able to easily turn wireless on or off while not leaving my book by pressing the menu button. NOW you have to leave the book - go to the home screen - access the menu- and then finally turn airplane mode off/on. Very un-user friendly!

CBRetriever says:
question why would you need to turn wireless on while you're reading? If it's to access wikipedia or the translator, it will ask you if you want to connect

In reply to an earlier post on Jun 22, 2012, 5:41:32 PM PDT
Dorsie says:
But does it ask you if you want to disconnect when you're finished?

CBRetriever says:
you're going to have to exit the book anyway to look something up on a Basic Kindle

Posted on Jun 23, 2012, 8:53:03 AM PDT
Previously, I could pick up my kindle in the evening; and knowing I had purchased an item during the day; easily connect and have the book(s) download in the background. It also kept the book I was currently reading as the top of my list instead of having to scroll down past however many new items I had added. It was also easy to disconnect after a few minutes to preserve battery life. Now I have to go "find" what I'm reading and jump thru virtual hoops to connect and disconnect. I read A LOT. This is a very inconvenient and poorly thought out "feature".

Patricia says:
My Kindle Basic update came through last evening, and I noticed that the Dictionaries are tucked neatly in a Collection (appropriately called "Dictionaries") in the Archived Items. Is there any reason why I can't move some of my other Collections to Archived Items to clear the screen? If not, why not? I've tried but haven't found a way. I would like to be able to archive collections by author or title and keep my screens clearer.

Another question: the User Guide for my Kindle said to turn off Wi-Fi when it was not in use, in order to conserve battery; the instructions in the update notice say: "Keep your Kindle connected to a Wi-Fi network to make sure you receive all future software updates." Does that mean to keep it on all the time, or once a day, or overnight, or what?

No, the Dictionaries collection is special. Amazon has not (yet) provided any way to put our own collections in the Archives.

The instruction to turn off WiFi was only a suggestion if you wanted longer battery life. Whether you turn off WiFi is entirely up to you. I never turn mine off, but I don't mind charging it every few days. If you are happy with battery life with WiFi on, leave it on. If you find it worth your while to turn it off to get more use between charges, turn it off.

Q says:
Pamela Hunt,
To show your most recent book at the top of your list, from the Home page, scroll to the top above that list and "sort by most recent".

In reply to an earlier post on Jun 23, 2012, 9:59:48 AM PDT
Q: Or "sort by collections", which also sorts by most recent but is more useful for people who use Collections.
