Agreed Anna. Sometimes people don't realize how lucky they are.

Saintly Brees, you wrote it down right! A Book Lover, me, too, but love my Kindle, now that I found David Mamet and other authors I like to read. Also nice to watch films in bed, with the screen perched on my middle. Hope everyone gets one, but keeps buying real books, too. A wonder-filled little device!

Do you have a Kindle Touch? You need to be sure you are tapping the screen or swiping horizonally, not vertically. If you swipe vertically you will go to the next or last chapter.

I hope that you get that Kindle. :D
You would probably appreciated it more than most. I grew up with very little, but I have learned that what am able to have - I appreciate that much more.
Ignore ignorance - some people will never be grateful for the things they have!

I agree. That is why I take care what I have also. I usually have to save several months to get new things. My home computer is over 5 years old now and I don't plan on replacing it until it dies. Thank god for Linux for older machines.

David, in the meantime install Kindle for PC on your computer. It is free.

Then search the Kindle store for the many free books available and read them on your computer.

If and when you do get a Kindle all the books you have acquired can then be sent to it.

Kindle for PC

Kindle for PC is a free application that lets you read Kindle books on your Windows-based personal computer--no Kindle required.

Exactly, I am not upset for growing up the way I did. I can live with very little, and appreciate and care for what I do have.
I admit the Kindle was a splurge, but I saved and did a little creative financing to get it. Plus reading is my greatest pleasure!! My computer was pushing 4 years, I am sure I would have had it much longer, had someone not stolen it two weeks ago. Grrr.

Same here. I am glad I grew up with very little. I also appreciate what I do have all the more. Reading is also my greatest pleasure. I don't even have cable TV any more. The few things I do watch I watch them on a 10 year old TV.

for some reason kindle dropped the wireless on/off option from my menu. so to max my battery i was forced to go airplane mode. when i tried to use the store kindle required a passord for cisco. that has never happaned and nothing i used has worked. that with 2 days of my carrier insisting they don't know what kindle wants and the really nice, but frustrating kids at kindle not beig able to help, yes kindle sucks...at least by me

They have not dropped it!

It is now called Airplane mode.

Go to Menu > Settings and you will find it.

Try a hard reboot. Unplug the charger cable. Then hold the slider or On switch fully on for 30 seconds and release.

Leave it alone and give it a few minutes to reboot.

Airplane mode Off = Wireless On

Airplane mode On = Wireless Off

Dr. Mama - Have you tried a reboot?

KessaJo says:
Did you get the extended warranty?

I am assuming that your Kindle was more than a year old or you would have called Kindle Customer Service to get a replacement.

ETA: Of course, all of that is if the reboot that Laura suggested didn't work.

"Ads," lambypie. They're "ads," not "adds."

I hope the person who chose it for you realizes what an ungrateful git you are, and never gifts you again.

I love this Zombie thread most of all. I can only assume that people get here by searching the forum for the term "kindle sucks" and then just appending their thoughts onto a five year stream of random complaints.

Well, and then you have the one that's titled "Kindle Sucks and it Blows", which is even more awesomeness.
