Q says:
Frustrated,
* You did this via your computer's browser on your "Managing My Kindle" page?
* You would then turn on your Fire's wireless and sync the Fire. Did you do that also?

Somehow, the info from Amazon's servers (of deregistering and reregistering) needs to get to the Fire.

The deregistering worked for me. Just make sure your kindle is turned off before you start.

I found I touch the screen accidentally much less now that I have a shell case on my kf. It ridges up just enough that it usually keeps my "holding " hand off of the screen.

The same for me once I started to use a gel case.

When I'm reading the Fire on my side, it automatically flips to Landscape mode. I'd like to be able to keep it in Portrait mode to make it easier to read. We had this with the early Kindles and now can force the display mode to be Portrait or Landscape with the Touch. I'd place that as highly as getting Collections.

David - You just need to lock the orientation. Go to Settings (round gear icon) and on the far left click on Unlocked to lock the orientation.

In reply to an earlier post on May 10, 2012, 11:26:47 PM PDT
@David: You can lock the screen on the Fire in either Portrait or Landscape orientation. Tap on the little wheel at the top of the Home screen and then select Lock/Unlock.

That's already available.
Click the gear in the upper right corner to get to settings, then tap the first setting option (currently says "unlocked", change it to "locked". Orientation is now locked. To unlock it (to change to landscape, for example), tap that settings option again.
I recommend the user guide that came preinstalled on your fire. It explains this, and many other very cool features on the fire. :)

Thanks very much for the information! Glad I finally asked and there was such a simple solution.

K.K., you may get a Kindle Fire eventually with cell-type connectivity. That would likely be significantly more expensive, since Amazon pays for the data use (after the initially higher price for the consumer) on the RSKs (Reflective Screen Kindles...anything but a Kindle Fire) which have it.

As to additional memory, you can buy a wi-fi drive you could use. Kingston makes some:

Wi-Fi Drive

I'm not connected with that device.

I tried de-registering then re-registering to make CS happy. It failed. My wi-fi is off and I can't turn it on without the password.
So, I'm still stuck with a shiny brick.

Also, I did try sideloading the update, and I get a greyed out box for "update your kindle" because I have the most current (bugged) version).

Over a week ago, we were told 1-2 days for a fix.

I know people are saying to do the deregister from the computer, but if your wifi is off, I think you should do it from the device first.

Gene,

I'm trying to understand the problems folks like you are having and unfortunately I cannot duplicate the solution because I don't have the problem. Can you confirm that you did the following?

() Turn off your Kindle Fire. All the way through Shut Down.
() Go to the Amazon website (obviously on your computer) and deregister and reregister your KF.
() Turn your KF on.
() Check to see that wifi is "on." If not, turn it on.
() Sync your KF.

What I'm hearing is that when you turn on your KF after the register/deregister you don't have a wifi connection and you cannot turn it on in order to sync. Is that the case?

Assuming it IS the case, have you tried leaving your KF ON (i.e. skipping step #1) when you go to the website and deregister/reregister it?

How do you deregister from the device? The User's Guide said to do from the website. Thank You

Click the gear in the upper right, then click more. Now, click my account, then click deregister.

@Gene

I just went through the process of updating my Kindle Fire to 6.3.1. Note that I had already updated my KF last week, I did this to see what would happen.

Sideload the update to your Kindle Fire's "Kindleupdates" folder.

Turn off "complete shutdown" your Kindle Fire.

Start your Kindle Fire.

Tap the Gear Icon. Then tap the More Button. Scroll down to the Device Button and tap that. The Update Button should now be highlighted.

This might not work if the update that you already have is complete. Which in my case it was, but the Update Button was highlighted and when I tapped it, the update precess started. It found that my update was already current and stopped the update process.

I am going to go the the MYK site and deregister my KF now, and then reregister it so I can see what happens then.

In reply to an earlier post on May 11, 2012, 10:46:02 AM PDT
@TuxGirl

The told us to use the MYK website from a computer to deregister, and register our Kindle Fire, so as to not delete our apps and books from the Kindle Fire.

If you deregister your Kindle Fire, from the Kindle Fire, You might keep your books and doc's if you have another Kindle Device, but your app will be gone from the account.

If you deregister, and register from your computer, then the Kindle Fire will still have all of its apps, books and doc's on the Kindle Fire and will sync with the cloud.

@Gene

Another note. I use ASTRO File Manager, available from 1mobile.com, it does more than ES File Explorer.

One of the most important thing that it can do is to make a backup of every app one your Kindle Fire. It then store the backups in the "Backups/Apps" folder on your Kindle Fire.

I have also started using "Backup Master" available from getjar.com, While I have not tested this yet. It is supposed to make a complete backup of your device. that you can restore to your Kindle Fire after a "Reset to Factory Defaults.

Glenn and Q, have both recommended this to me, and they are pretty knowledgeable. They got me back to using GO Launcher EX, after I had decided that it was another piece of crapware. I just needed to get it from somewhere other than where I had got it previously.

It looks to me that those who can't turn their wifi on are still going to have problems syncing after the deregister/register fix. Those that can turn wifi on might be in luck. Hopefully people can figure out a password to at least turn wifi on to sync.

In reply to an earlier post on May 11, 2012, 11:11:53 AM PDT
@everybody "including my friend glenn"

do not turn off "shut down" your kindle fire during the actual updating process. you will not like that any more than your kindle fire brick will not like it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TuxGirl says:
Deregistering will not remove *anything* from your account. It will remove books purchased from amazon from your kindle, but apps and personal docs are not removed from the device.

Rogue says:
Michael. They said to turn your device off before the registration process on your PC. When that is completed, then turn your Fire on and let it do it's thing. Glenn
