I fooled around with it a bit, and re-downloading the problem books seemed to force the cover to update. Some of them I had to do several times over, or the cover wasn't the same on the carousal as the shelf, but it is better than nothing.

If you restored factory settings, would that do what you want? OR will it really get rid of the ALL the books,etc., on your kindle?

This is how I restored all my missing books, docs, news & music that had been downloaded by both Amazon cloud and calibre. Using root explorer I could see that they were on the Kindle.

This appears to be a problem with rooted Kindles getting the Kindle Android app installed. This is what worked on our two Kindles.

From the Home screen:

* Settings (gear icon) > More...> Applications
* Set filter to "All Applications"
* Swipe down to the Amazon Kindle App
* Clear Data

Hard reboot; press the on button until you get the shutdown message, shut down, restart

Start "GO Launcher EX"
Go to "Play Store"
Search for "Kindle Android"
Go there
One of the option tabs should be to uninstall
Hard Reboot

Your books should now be back.

I called Amazon about this issue. All you have to do is what they call a "hard shut-down". Simply hold the power button for at least 20 seconds. After that, push the power button like you normally would when you are turning on the device. And voila, the images are all showing again! Don't know how often this will have to be done, but I guess it's like restarting a computer when it gets glitched.

I had the same problem, this fix worked for me. The only downside is that I had to re-download all of my books and music; my apps were still there.

1. Delete the book from device, To delete most items from your Kindle Fire, press and hold the item and tap "Remove from Device" or "Delete."

2. Deregister the kindle , On your Kindle Fire, tap the "Quick Settings" icon then tap "More" from the Settings menu, tap on "My Account," and then tap "Deregister."

3. Do a hard reset, Please make sure kindle is not connected to any power source before doing the reset. To reset your Kindle Fire, press and hold the power button on the bottom of the Kindle for a full 20 seconds. Hold the power button for 2 seconds to turn the device back on.

4. Once the device has turned back on , Register the kindle back on your account

5. Re-download the book from cloud

As long as I don't keep more than about 8-10 items on the carousel, I never get the gray outs. If I have a LOT of items on my carousel, I get the graying out of items there and in favorites.

First I had issues with it connecting and staying connected to WiFi to the point where I couldn't do anything if it involved being online. They finally sent me a new Kindle Fire...sent the old one back. New one did the same thing with the WiFi. Went in a fooled around with settings in my wireless router and don't have a clue what I did, but it started working...FOR NOW. Who knows what tomorrow will bring. But now....I have an issue with missing app covers. A lot are there then I have these grey squares. It is so frustrating. I wouldn't recommend a Kindle Fire to anyone until Amazon steps up to the plate and fixes these bugs in their OS!

I have de-registered my Fire twice and I still I do not get the picture icon for some of my books. It is extremely annoying and I wish they would solve it. This may sound juvenile but those picture icons are important to me because I know by the picture which books I want to read as opposed to the title.

I have this same problem or a variation of it: first off, I have a Toshiba Thrive running ICS. Not rooted. I have the Android Kindle app. I load books into the Kindle from my computer using the USB cable. Everything had been fine for me up until about 2 weeks ago when I started the Kindle app and the books had disappeared. I loaded them back in again and this same problem kept happening intermittently. Looking at it with a file manager I could see that sometimes the files were right there in the Kindle directory, but the app wouldn't access them. Select the file directly through the file manager and I get a message saying that "Unfortunately Kindle has stopped working." Other times I look at the directory in the file manager and the book files have simply vanished--they're not there anymore. I can re-load the books and they'll be there/or not be there in future openings of the app. I thought it might be due to ICS, but after reading this forum, I don't think that's it. I've tried the "clear all data" solution mentioned in here and it worked, but I have no faith that this has cured the problem. Anyway, it's very annoying and Amazon needs to do something about it.

I tried the clear data info above and Wow, My Kindle went nuts for a few seconds, blinking on and off and when it settled 3/4th of My book and Game Icons were now little grey squares..Yikes! Much worse off now, What on earth will fix this mess?Any Ideas are much appreciated.

it happened to me on two kindles. i concluded it was where i was downloading them. i was in a restricted wifi zone (a school) and anything that downloaded after that was gray. i dont know how it happened but once i got the new kindle i no longer downloaded while in that zone. no more gray boxes. amazon has no idea how to fix it.
