Give all that a try and let us know what happens.

No. It won't affect your warranty at all. Amazon is well aware of the problems with the charge port and they're not making any waves, whatsoever, about replacing KF's that have such a problem. I suspect that you could literally fry the entire motherboard from a lightning strike and Amazon would swallow hard, smile, and send you a new one. :)

On the other hand, if you toss the KF off the roof and the screen breaks, Amazon will (correctly) point out that accidental damage is not covered by the standard warranty.

It turned on and made its way to the unlock screen. Then it said Power off, shutting down (this is possibly because I had low battery at the time that I went to turn it off, and it instead shut itself off? Now it is back on and installing an update as it starts up. fingers crossed that all issues are fixed!

It would be interesting to know what update it's installing. The last one (6.3.1) came out about six weeks ago so I'm surprised that you hadn't received it before now. When it's back up and running, take a look in Settings>More>Device and see what version of the OS you're running.

Now I am operating under 6.3.1, but, I think that since I just got my Kindle a couple of days ago it is possible that it wasn't up to date when I first got it? It seems to be running smoothly now. Hopefully since the updates are up to date, I won't have any more issues! Thank you so much for your help and I'll be sure to use the CORRECT charger from now on! Based on some questions from another thread, I did some experimentation with the charging process and found a condition I hadn't encountered before. (Probably not a new condition, just one I had not tested thoroughly enough.) Here's the scenario.

() You plug in the charger. If the KF is "off," it turns on.
() The orange light glows.
() You shutdown the KF by holding the power button and answering the question that appears on the screen by telling the KF to "shut down."
() The power button light turns off.

At this point the KF should be charging but you won't be able to monitor its progress via the orange turns to green power light.

() You disconnect the charger and try to turn on the KF.

() At this point the KF may fail to turn on. In fact, it may take several pushes of the button to achieve a boot. In fact, you may have to reconnect the charger to get the KF to respond.

() Once the KF is up and running if you reboot it (hold the power button for 30 seconds, allow it to turn off on its own and then press the power button again) it should operate normally.

What is apparently happening as far as I can tell is that if the KF is completely turned off, the power button will not light up. (This is contrary to Amazon's support documentation. I suspect it may have happened in the course of OS updates on the KF.) If you pull the charge cable and attempt to boot the KF it may require a couple of tries for the KF to straighten itself out.

The bottom line is that if you want to monitor the KF's charge progress, once you connect the charge cable, put the KF to sleep but don't turn it off altogether. I suspect that if you DO turn it off and wait until the battery is completely charged, you won't encounter a problem rebooting it. I strongly suspect that if the KF is "off" (not sleeping but "off") the OS may require some repeated prodding to straighten itself out.

Opps, I've been plugging my Fire's in to charge and waiting till they go to the opening screen and completely shutting them down....so far no problems turning them back on after charged but I will stop doing that.

I do have one more question:
When I bought my Fires, I also bought this charger: AmazonBasics Wall Charger with USB Outlet (2.1 Amp Output)
which is a 5v @ 2.1 amp charger,
the charger that came with the Fire is 5v @ 1.8 amp
I was under the impression that it was o.k. to use to charge faster...

Will using the 2.1 amp charger hurt the battery? I know it will charge faster but if it is at the expense of battery degradation I'll stick with the oem charger.

My Fire already seems to go through the battery a little fast for my liking, I do use WiFi more than my wife but hers last hours longer than mine, she mostly reads and plays games. Right out of the box I did the drain to 15% and full charge routine, twice for both. I've done a hard shutdown on mine, but not hers.
Need more time to see if it is WiFi usage or I got a dud.

AZ, you should be fine using the 2.1 amp charger. The KF should control the charge input. It may charge a bit faster than the charger supplied with your KF but you should find that it takes longer to charge from 90% to 100% than it does from, say, 50% to 60%.

As far as comparative battery drain is concerned, this stuff is notoriously difficult to quantify. It may be your greater use of wifi, but even the effect of wifi on battery drain will vary greatly depending on the strength of the wifi signal.

For example, my KF has wifi on almost constantly while I sit in my home office with a strong wifi signal from my router sitting a few feet away. If I do little or nothing with the KF it will easily last for 18-24 hours with almost no battery drain. On the other hand if I take the KF with me and forget to turn off wifi, there is a significant battery drain associated with the KF "looking" for a wifi signal or from a weak wifi connection.

Furthermore, if I turn the screen off when I'm not using the KF, the battery drains very, very slowly. If I leave the screen on, an hour or two later and my battery will have drained significantly. I use a utility (Screen Dim) that enables me to control brightness and contrast independently so I keep the brightness turned down and the contrast turned up. It makes a significant difference in the battery drain.

Bottom line is that if you compare your KF with your wife's, be sure to set the two units at the same screen brightness and account for the differences in wifi use and location in relation to your router. In other words, as noted above, trying to get good data for these comparisons can be tough.

jsh1120. I cannot thank you enough for all of your help. I'm so glad I found this forum and thanks once again. I've had the same problem as many people here have had. Last night I followed your instructions to the core but I wasn't aware that while I was supposed to charge it once I completely turned it off, no light (orange/green) would show. So I thought it wasn't charging. This morning when I woke up I checked it and I discovered that it was fully charged! Thanks for the info and all your help.

Also, is it ok for me to let my kindle charging every night? Thanks in advance

That's very bad luck. I hope your third time is the charm. I don't need to tell you that the port can be fragile so when you get your new one be sure NOT to force the connection, to be sure you're not trying to insert the cable "upside down" (it's easy to make the error) and to not put ANY stress on the port while you're charging the KF. That means don't try to use the KF with the cable inserted and make sure that the cable has slack when it's inserted. (As you know the cable is very short so figure out a way to charge the KF with the cable inserted straight into the KF at a 90 degree angle.)

Good luck and be sure to charge your KF for four hours or so before trying to use it.

You don't have to buy a new charge cord. If the problem lies in the cable, itself, Amazon will send you a new cable (or credit your account so you can "purchase" one free of charge.) Likewise, if the port in the KF, itself, is "loose," Amazon will replace the unit. Contact Kindle CS by using the yellow button on the right side of this page. Don't send email. Have Amazon call you; they will do so within a couple of minutes.

My first was in Feb. And I'm doing what you're doing on Fire #3; so far, so good. I was careful to note the degree of wiggly on the port right out of the box, and it seems to be the same, which is honestly kind of sloppy feeling.

However, that doesn't seem to be the issue; with #1 & #2 I had resorted to placing hairclips under the charger to get the light to come on. But I think it was less a physical issue, and more what this thread is talking about. I've only had #3 for a few weeks, but I'm trying the battery-meter maintenance.
