Whether you think that answer is acceptable or not, that's how it works. If you're not willing to wait, there are instructions on the linked page on how to perform the update before the wireless push occurs. -Craig

I am actually very annoyed at the switch from simply being able to turn off wireless from the main menu and now having to go into settings and turn on airplane mode to turn off the wireless. At first I thought that this was a bug in the update. Is this something Amazon intentionally did? Yuck.

Of course not. The KK uses version 3 software.

Each Kindle uses a different version of software. The KK uses version 3, the basic Kindle uses version 4 and the Touch uses version 5. They are not interchangeable since they each have different functions.

Is it text to speech, or is it also reading all the menus? If so, it's the Voice Guide. To turn that off go to Home, Menu, Settings, next page, Voice Guide and select "Turn off". You can also turn it on or off by pressing Shift and the space bar at the same time - which is probably how it got turned on.

and I thought the K4 (basic kindles) couldn't talk?

They can't - no audio hardware at all. I assume penny is just another misplaced post.

You're a genius! It was Voice Guide and you are probably correct in how it got turned on. It is now "quiet". Thanks so much!

You're not the first to have that problem, so it wasn't hard to guess. Since they added the Shift+Space shortcut several people have accidentally turned it on without knowing it.

Apparently my update took place 2 days ago. unfortunately my kindle is now froze up. At first I thought my battery just died out, except the home page (ads were still present) I brought it home to charge and it came back on but is froze up on a story I started before I put it away yesterday. When plugged into my computer it advises me to unplug if I want to use it, it is not charging. I just got this for mothers day so it is new to me... what am I doing wrong.. or how do I unfreeze it ?

D. Cox - Try rebooting it.

For 2nd Generation, Keyboard Kindle, Basic Kindle, Touch Kindle and DX Kindle:
Make sure it's fully charged. Unplug the Kindle.
Slide the power switch over (or press the power button) for 30 seconds (count them).
PUT IT DOWN AND DON'T TOUCH IT. It may take a few minutes to reboot.
Your books and Collections will repopulate.

Is anyone else seeing odd font size behavior on the Basic Kindle since the update? We have 2 Basic models, and have now seen what seems to be bad formatting in at least 2 books. The default font is so small it is unreadable, and we have to go all the way to the 7th font size to get the text to change enough to be able to read it.

I've seen it in Restorations (Oregon In Love) and Jason Tesar's new book Incarnation: Wandering Stars Volume One.

I think I had a couple of other freebies do the same thing, but I deleted them.

Yes. I'm going to call CS when I get home about this. I know it has to be the update, because I have downloaded the same samples to the K1 (works properly), the K3 (fine), the Fire (fine) and to 3 basics. Two of the basics display the same problem; one displays the sample properly. The only difference is the one that displays it properly has NOT had the upgrade. QED - the upgrade is the problem. Now I just want to know if we can get rid of said upgrade.

Dave S. says:
I like the tweaked font, the parental controls and the smarter keyboard (i.e., already being open when you need it).

I'm indifferent about the dictionary thing.

The wifi change, however, is a major step back, IMO. It is no longer convenient to use. I suspect the goal is to have you connected to Amazon 100% of the time. That however is a big hit to the battery life, and I will be more likely to leave the wifi off with this change.

Amazon, please return the wifi controls to the previous version.

I love the new font! The difference is slight, but before the change I would have a bit more trouble reading in low light situations than my K3. Since the update low light reading has improved.

I completely agree with you D. Swain on the wi-fi change! I will only turn wi-fi on now when I have books to be delivered. Since the special offers have become almost non-existent, its not as much of a bother as it could have been.

I noticed some odd behavior--or maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me.
Whenever there is a break of a few lines on a page(i.e. starting a new paragraph), it seems the font is smaller on the bottom of the page(the new paragraph). When I go to the next page, all is fine.
The "smaller" font is still perfectly readable, but I swear it's smaller...

I have a Kindle Touch 3G. Starting this week, I have to reserve books I want to order on my Wish List and download from my computer. Today I couldn't even do that!! I had to use the computer to send the book to my Wish List and then download it from my Wish List to my Kindle. This is not an improvement because until you updated the $79 Kindle I could download directly to my Kindle from the list on my Kindle. This is a mess. Please do another update and fix this soon.

In reply to an earlier post on Jun 11, 2012 3:36:34 PM PDT
When you say "Wish List" I'm guessing you mean your library? Because your Wish List is a list of things you plan to buy, and doesn't contain the books you've purchased.

The update to the $79 Kindle did not affect your ability to download books - either to the Kindle or the Kindle Touch. So, waiting for another update from Amazon isn't going to solve your problem.

The first thing I'd try is to reset your Kindle. Just hold the power button "On" for 30 seconds, then release and wait for it to reboot. See if that solved your problem. If not, try contacting Customer Service for help - all you're reaching here are other Amazon Customers. Click "Contact Us" on the right to reach Customer Service.
