Hi! I just opened my Paperwhite that I was so excited about and noticed there are 4 dark 'blobs' on the bottom of the display. Is this normal??

Yes. Read the "We want you to know" section of the product page.

If it's any encouragement, after having read a number of books on my Paperwhite, I find I simply don't notice those as I read. It helps, perhaps, that I can see the improvement over a book light. :)

I only noticed it after I read some comments about it. I don't notice anymore. Kobo solved the issue by putting a little darkened border at the bottom that covers up the shadows. Maybe Amazon will do the same in an update. I played around with a Kobo Glow in a book store the other day and really liked that solution to the problem - and the border had some info like page number, etc in it - so it serves a purpose as well. If Amazon had launched with that little border at the bottom, they could have saved themselves a lot of grief from receiving all of these comments. Other than that, I think the Paperwhite is perfect - I love mine so much.

Yeah, I find it totally bogus that they said in their videos that showed how the light was distributed that it was perfectly even on the entire screen. Now that video is gone of course. I had the second generation kindle for the last three years, and have loved it, but my husband bought me this new paperwhite as a gift and I feel a little let down by the blobs after seeing the video about how perfect it would be. I noticed it the moment I turned it on. I would urge Amazon to update the paperwhite to utilize the bottom space in a darker fashion (apparently Kobo does this?). I hope I don't find anything else to be disappointed with.

To be honest everyone's posts here are a bit of a relief, I bought the paperwhite as I had the black line problem on my old Kindle and would have been really upset if I had received another faulty Kindle!

@SeaLevel274, I know that this was 3 years ago and so the product has gone through at least one revision (maybe many!) since then, but I can't find any "We want you to know" section on the current product page (All-New Kindle Paperwhite, 6" High-Resolution Display (300 ppi) with Built-in Light, Wi-Fi - Includes Special Offers). Do you know if it's still there? I'm wondering if this is still expected on the latest version.
